Game The Most Disliked Family Episode

Saving "New Ground," because I always thought it was a cop-out for Worf (and the writers) to send Alexander away to be raised by his grandparents. It also seemed a little cold, being that Alexander had just lost his mother when that happened. "Well, son, sorry about Mom. Nope, you can't live with me. Bye!" Also being that Worf was stationed on a ship that explicitly permitted families.

So I found it pretty satisfying when Worf was finally made to live up to a parent's responsibilities.

It's chock full of bizarre decisions, but

TNG Feature: "Star Trek Nemesis"​

still has that awesome ramming scene.

Heck, all they needed was one script editor to polish with finesse, and then a script editor to add finesse to what that script editor and then a script editor to add polish and finesse what that script editor's script editor polished with finesse. The more writers that chuck in ideas just needs someone else to smooth out rough edges and this one has more rough edges than a shiny new chainsaw. There's a lot in the story that has actual potential, which is let down by being crammed with lots of stuff that's not needed - or so ridiculously over-complicated that it just can't hold up.

All that said, the ramming still awesome, and works far better than walking into a bar's restroom at just the wrong time (which comes across better than when going into every subsequent scene of the movie...)

Tom Hardy excels with the dialogue he has to deal with, and a lot of it is not the best, but that's not his fault...

And the idea of an evil Picard is admittedly intriguing. And it's not via the old "Mirror universe version at your service" shtick, which is a big plus. Could it have been done better and not overloaded with expositiondumps? Easily. The story's real problems are too numeorus plot points cobbled by pacing that's even more uneven than a treadmill that has a worn out belt, and it's one of the biggest plot points involves its... erm, nemesis. If Ru'afo could be crafted in less than a quarter hour to be a sufficiently compelling enemy or General Chang in half that time, then there's no reason Shinzon couldn't be.

I think I'm the only lover of "Rules Of Acquisition"! I feel like I'm the only person who's ever saving it. But I will save it again!

The later season installments are another matter, but I do think the early season Ferengi episodes are legitimately good. This one wins all around with me... the ROTW elements are actually emotionally persuasive, the edgier early feeling of the Quark/Rom relationship is still hanging around a little (always fun to recall their story basically begins with Rom repeatedly attempting to murder Quark), the backdoor intro of the Dominion is of course widely praised as a great example of DS9's clever thinking on plotting.

In the negatives, we have a lousy and problematic Nagus/Kira B story. Even in a mostly successful early Ferengi installment, the troubling trends are beginning to emerge...

Sons and Daughters is definitely the weakest episode during the Occupation Arc.7

It has a pretty silly story for Worf and Alexander, but I think it's worth rewatching for the scenes with Kira, Dukat and Ziyal.

It was a good Rom episode, finally standing up to Quark and going out on his own. Best decision he made.

The Worf story was cool, too. It showed just how different life is between Starfleet starships and DS9. Loved his last line of how it might be everyone else who has to adapt to him.

It's a shame that they decided to make Worf a bad father after he made so much progress on TNG. The whole plot is nonsense. Noooooooooooooooseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeense!

Yes! For the life of me I don't understand why the DS9 writers thought they even had to go there. They had Alexander nicely parked on earth, and technically it was appalling, but we all hate Alexander so everyone was willing to nod along with it (and you can kind of handwave that Alexander is older, the crash of the Enterprise was a trauma, etc. so now it does make more sense for him to be on earth)

Then they blew it all up for this shitty, pointless story and a wedding cameo? FRUSTRATING

Meanwhile, "Ferengi Love Songs" is a satisfying guilty pleasure, and a triumph of brilliant prosthetic acting over a subpar script. All the Ferengi actors are fantastic in this. It's striking how immediately and (seemingly) effortlessly Cecily Adams commands this role, after someone as supremely talented as Andrea Martin flailed and sunk under the weight of the same makeup.

Cecily was fantastic as Ishka.

Fun fact (or footnote, as my wife would have me call it)... Cecily Adams was the wife of Jim Beaver, best known as Bobby Singer on SUPERNATURAL. (He was also one of the officers in "BROKEN BOW" that was in the medbay when the Vulcans were about to let Klaang die.)

His character once even said in "FRONTIERLAND", when Dean said "We'll STAR TREK IV this bitch!", after blank stares by Sam and Bobby, Bobby said that he only watched DEEP SPACE 9. (Yet another one of the MANY reasons I always loved that old curmudgeon.) Clearly, his nod to his late wife as Ishka.

The Q Tribunal now needs all three to show on screen, just imagine if "Encounter at Farpoint" had three Q the likes of DeLancie appear on the 1701-D instead... if nothing else, the Tribunal is refreshing, counterbalancing Q's more creative personality with the three ironing boards they appear as.

All in all, it's not the most intellectual episode, much less a really deep one... and comedy is always subjective, even for those who generally like Q - meaning not everybody's going to dig it... but get some wine or 45 year-old Ripple or even 32oz of Everclear and enjoy that with this episode and a bag or three of low-carb potato chips excerpt there's no potato just kale and thus fewer calories.

How this hasn't been saved yet is beyond me! We get to meet the rest of the LaForge family and experience a wide range of emotions from Geordie. Some fantastic acting as he goes all through the spectrum, plus i loved the idea of him as a probe. Seeing the phaser blast come out of his hand reminded me a lot of Doctor Who and the Dalek weapons or indeed, the Cybermen.

After "Coda," I am surprised that there was a single piece of scenery on the Voyager set that didn't show visible teethmarks. Points for committing, I guess. But I did genuinely like the interaction between Janeway and Chakotay in the shuttle scenes: warm, friendly, and comfortable. A favorite interchange is when they're discussing "Talent Night."

Janeway: Maybe I could stand with an apple on my head and you could phaser it off.
Chakotay: Sounds great. If I miss, I get to be captain.

It was definitely an interesting look at Worf and Alexander's relationship anyway. One of the better family episodes in S7, I think.
