Once again saving "Cost of Living," because middle-aged me can appreciate the courage of middle-aged Lwaxana, who eventually realized that, whatever the cost, she had to be true to who she was. I found her cross-generational connection to Alexander endearing. (I felt a little bad for Worf, though, who as a parent was never short of people telling him what to do!)

Oh fan, my love of fudge...

DS9 Season 6: “Time’s Orphan”

Due to a fudge-up, Molly goes through a magical time portal and plops out a decade older. Unfortunately the other side of the portal didn't have magical big dinosaurs, or anyone else she could(n't) relate to, so she grew up all those years with no upbringing and is constantly paranoid and insecure. Sleestak have that effect on people but most wouldn't see that for a while, and this show was not about Rick, Will, and Molly...

Of course, making this a 10 part episode to show a year per episode would be boring. So we get the edited highlights and the sheer level of shock on Keiko's and Miles' faces.

I still cannot believe they'd bring up "THE TEMPORAL PRIME DIRECTIVE" (<-- see that as annoyingly large and blinky text) and how this Molly's got a right to live things out the way they were, forgetting they violated the temporal plot device by having her go through the portal to DevolutionLand of the Lost in the first place, and their Molly was robbed of a decade, with hideous consequences for everyone involved, and apparently isn't allowed to have a say.

What makes it work is not just Keiko and Miles having to re-teach their daughter, but also the exploration of a possible outcome of a lack of parenting. It's a bit extreme, but not surprising given this is the O'Brien family on Staaaaaaar Trek Deep Space Nine.

Of course, anyone would know all would be well by the end - it's the adventure in the middle that keeps it as interesting as it is tragic.

"Imperfection" Jeri Ryan is such an incredible actress, and one fabulous example of this is how moving and resonant Seven's relationship with Icheb is, even though Manu Intiraymi is a terrible actor who contributes nothing. Jeri Ryan is so talented she can basically act the relationship for both of them and make it amazing anyway!

Lineage is a lovely episode. It's hard seeing B'Elanna want to change the appearance of her baby, all based on the rocky childhood she had with her father leaving. The scene with Tom at the end when he reassures her is perfect.

I do find the resolution of the Tom/B'Elanna relationship one of the best things in S7 of VOY.

Worf relives his rite of puberty!

TNG Season 2: “The Icarus Factor”

As usual, ~~Data's mullet~~ Worf steals the show and he's the main reason worth watching this one.

Note the vignetting around the screen edges. Not sure if that's intentional but it allows a sense of claustrophobia.

Actually, note Worf speaking in Klingonese and English - the Bridge crew are his current family but is he not also calling out to his adopted human parents as well? I know, it's minutiae... but that's also a thing that can be good in ongoing sagas.. Not too much, not too little, just give the audience a modicum of credit and voila!

And note how the Bridge crew don't help him after he's done. The ceremony hints they can't as this is a (silly) test of Worf as a viable warrior Klingon. Which reminds, I can't wait for K'Ehleyr to pop up later this season and she's chock full of Klingon Quippy Mocking(tm) to goad Worf with.

Oh yeah, the story has the other plot with Riker turning down a promotion and has a dad that looks like Gene Roddenberry (but wasn't) who did it with Pulaski in the lab with something...

Oh, and the music for the fight where they used skateboard pads along with recycled Tron movie costumes:

I bet 50 Quatloos on the participant wearing neon green and purple. Oh wait, that person comes in the next round. It's one of the 500 jealous exes Riker also interfered with... But break time was over so he then washed, shaved, and then went back on duty, overwrought and in a fit of pique:

I laughed then contemplated asking that video creator to submit it as a series finale to 'The Orville'.

Return to Grace has more meat to it than the setup for it in Indiscretion.

Ziyal is a great character though, and it's interesting seeing Dukat having a slightly warmer, familial side to him. I like that he needed to try to rebuild Cardassia single-handedly in his Bird of Prey, although it would be single-handedly.

At the time, of course, we had no idea what would ultimately become of Dukat, yet it was interesting seeing more layers to him.

I'm saving ENT: "Home", mainly for the Trip, T'Pol, and T'Les scenes. T'Pol acting like a moody teenager was rather amusing considering her actual age, but it just goes to show that anyone can revert when face-to-face with their parent/s. Plus, the final scene of T'Pol's marriage to Koss with Trip watching was just heart-breaking.
Oh, and I love the bit where Soval and Archer grow up and actually begin to respect each other!

"SONS OF MOGH" is my next save.

A great Worf episode. And the ending when he tells 'Rodek' he has no family... heartbreaking. And the way he tells Bashir it was the only way after Bashir tells him the impossibility of getting his memory back... you can tell that shook him to the core. And Jadzia's look of sorrow on her face... one of the most expressive no dialogue moments she ever had.

Saved for schizoid reasons?

TNG Season 1: “Justice”

Hardly... Well, hopefully hardly...

Before Roddenberry turned the story into-- that... there's actually a solid and creepy premise or few worth exploring. A society where anything no matter how slight is punishable by death. Using Wesley as the lamb would be perfect because of humanity's "unusual attachment to their children" ("When the Bough Breaks") combined with "Will someone please think of the children!" (ubiquitous meme...) Complete with an analysis of the Prime Directive and how to get Wesley out of it safely...

Unfortunately, the episode was also written or rewritten to chuck in:

make it utterly painless (and not be bothered to sell how that does a better job at it)
free of technology
free of food, but nobody's ever eating or drinking
but there's plenty of baby oil
and a god in a big ship housing lots of them, who for all we can guess engineered the Edo so they don't need to eat or drink or obey any other laws of pesky physics (though that gravity can come in handy...)
everyone's running or massaging or boinking (no wonder they stay fit, which actually explains away one issue)
no cooties, or cures for cooties so it doesn't matter if they share each other or not
no jealousy, apparently but if anyone can switch partners and do-si-do "at the drop of a hat" it's possible a nonissue, especially if they all really care about each other or are too stupid to, I can't believe I'm analyzing this one but it's still better than a lot of stories already saved
no babies
yet a couple token older people, did the big machine thing wander on in a decade earlier and promptly sterilized everyone?! This story is superficial but under the surface there are questions it could have been answering. That said...
everyone's the same skin and hair color...
and everyone's the same sexual orientation regardless of foreground or blurry background area...
never mind those wigs were hideous, the mops at the custodian closet looked more real...
they have pastel blue and pastel pink clothes yet these are just slapped onto people randomly (which might be an unintentional plus, except no female is wearing blue... do note that blue used to be attributed to females and pink to males in the past...)
All that and more!

...Except it's also not 1968 anymore, not very bold in any of its topics, the last 5 minutes just sweep the prime directive under the rug (the Edo God thing must hate humans more than the Q, and indeed are the Edo the Q? ), and even TOS's attempt at this story ("The Apple") hamfisted some of the same ideas - only worse, believe it or not.

So the episode had some pre-Roddenberryindulgence in its favor and despite it some themes are still there. Just hamfisted at its finest and to the point that this story arguably should not have been made, but despite that it's still better than some others and in part because there's substance that's being hinted at in the story. And stories with substance are best, even if it's so poorly scripted it turns into a superficial mess.

The Abandoned is a good one, even if I had to look up the title and remember it. It perhaps became my abandoned episode.

Seeing Odo and the crew discover the infant Jem'Hadar, and raise him on the station is great to watch. It's obvious that the child will have to leave, but Odo ensures it all ends peacefully.

This is also the episode Odo gets his quarters, and he puts the plant that Kira gets him into his old bucket. Great imagery!

That was a good episode, but my favorite parts were actually the dinner. Sisko learning more about Jake in that way was a big moment for Ben. It made him realize he is really growing up and becoming his own person. That has to be a proud and terrifying moment for a parent at the same time.

I do love Jake and Benjamin's relationship in DS9, it feels realistic. I also like how in other episodes Jake play's matchmaker for him.

I'll always come to the rescue for "Manhunt"! A season 2 highlight for me, I may have zero complaints about it. A fabulous example of how much fun Berman Trek could have with extremely low-stakes episode setups. (Streaming Trek really should take note the next time they find themselves AGAIN setting the stakes as: the extinction of all life in the universe!)

TNG Season 2: “Manhunt”

Mick Fleetwood plays a fish! Everyone was expecting a human with a silly beard, ponytail, and vest!

Dr Pulaski gives them bait!

Worf wants to hump them!

But Wesley does not, and you thought the wunderkid could do anything!

This episode, in the right mood, despite some archaic humor that doesn't hold up, is still largely fun for the moments that still do.

But it's hilarious, how the teaser sets up Lwaxana as being THE big scary threat of the week...
...on Staaaaaaaaaaar Trek, The Next Generation! (Also note the purple hue behind the steel gray silhouette of the title. Here you can see it scroll down. On the blu-ray, it vanishes abruptly. :nyah:

But the teaser knows this episode is pure camp and embraces it - and why not? Dated or not, it worked at the time.

Saving "Dark Frontier," which is more than Seven's parents bothered to do for their daughter. The episode left a strong impression on me, and as far as Magnus and Erin Hansen went it was mostly negative. You don't take a small child into a situation that dangerous, you self-centered idiots! You are the worst! Parents! Ever!

My affection for the dipshit duo was only enhanced by the fact that I had a small child of my own back when the episode first aired.

I'm being compelled to save Image in the Sand by the 13th orb.

I also like it because it's another great example of the SIsko family interplay. Worf feeling bad on behalf of Jadzia's death is well done too.

The sweet cliffhanger with Ezri is a good end to the episode as well.
