TNG Season 4: “Legacy”​

Being episode 80, there were some in-jokes regarding the Camus system... and, of course, the title being a thinly veiled wink and tribute...

Add in Ishara Yar, who looks fabulous in any outfit apart from the leftover two leotards from Peri's six year-old collection of all things, Doctor Who was ahead of its time or TNG thought it would be cool to do the same thing. Okay, I prefer her onscreen acquaintance but that's another story.

Yes, there are massive plot holes and reuse of iconic Borg ship wall sections-so-soon-after-TBOBW for no reason. This episode's focused on more fun things, which makes for a fun thrill ride (another subtle harkback to TOS and it's nice when TNG does an action episode too, ya know!) and with some genuine sympathy for Ishara's shoulder pads and the rest of her to go along with them.

I always did enjoy this story for its action fare, adding in some background to Yar, and it builds on Tasha's memory quite nicely.

And that ending... they could have mentioned flipsides of not trusting anyone but that would start to get dreary.

It's not a top 20, but it's above average for an episode and given its milestone it's a bit better than that as well. It does have a familial-style feel to it, just a... warped one...

That was going to be my next save. So much for saving one for every series...

My next save is "MORTAL COIL".

I never found Neelix nearly as bad as so many people say. A damaged person with a tragic past and overcompensating with cheer, yes.

But here he is a genuinely interesting character. He went through a major event, and it shook him to the core. This became very dark at the end with him almost ending his own life.

And it was a great use of Chakotay, too. I think he would have made a good ship's counselor as a secondary thing for him to do.

I always had a soft spot for this flick. It's TNG's most philosophical that Q was leading on audiences with from the TV show finale, and that alone makes up for a lot.

It also has some great action scenes, a phenomenal crash (a sad ending to a great starship), a first rate soundtrack, and also uses some leftover plot strands from TNG in a fairly successful manner.

Quick, tell me what Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Dr. Tolian Soran have in common? They lost loved ones in fiery events. But Picard has his starship family. Soran has none of any sort. Just chasing an impossible dream, one that if he gets to he won't want to leave.

And like a good ex, Soran is an evil little snot and trolls the Charlie Dickens out of Picard and with a surprisingly metaphorical quip of sardonic panache: "Time is the fire in which we burn." Not even TWOK could pull off such a line had they attempted.)

And I may be one of the two people in the universe who preferred the originally intended ending, until a test screening was metr with furore and demand to have it changed:

Granted, what people got was still a death scene - one that just didn't do the movie any justice. The original is more macabre and genuinely tragic and a lot more gutsy. No overly long speech. No stupid (even by my standards!) pun about "Captain on the bridge? No, that's bridge on the captain" jokes. And seeing Soran's face is victory enough after his murdering Kirk, especially as this clip makes Soran more a proper evil figure. This movie just did not have the room for the "sympathetic villain" trope if it was also going to murder Kirk as a plot point. And remember, Kirk said he would die alone. As he grew older he was making more mistakes (TWOK) - these tiddlybits are far more thematic to Kirk's character than his official ending. As well as Shakespearean. IMHO, of course.

Reunion is always heartbreaking to rewatch. Poor K'Ehleyr, and poor Alexander.

Worf's reason's for killing Duras fell into the morally-grey-Klingon-honour area, but Picard putting him in his place was a very good scene.

Awesome episode about Data, and his relation to his "father", and how you can still convey powerful emotions as an actor even when you're playing a supposedly 'emotionless' android.

And yes, I'm sure Data did mourn the departing of Soong .... in his own way.

Now for the DS9 save that "Similitude" bumped: "Second Skin". I love this episode: Kira's horror at discovering what she's become, and her slide towards, if not acceptance, then insanity. And the relationship she forges with Tekeny Ghemor at the end (which leads into "Ties of Blood and Water") which, I think, is a big part of her growth towards releasing her all encompassing hatred towards Cardassians.

[Bad Thoughts]

Saving Dr. Bashir, I Presume. Take the Leeta-Rommance out, and a great family drama is left. I think that the episode does a great job of exploring the expectations of parents and children, and how parents can make mistakes with the best of intentions. This is one of Siddig's better episode features (although there is an oddity when he says, "our little secret"). Fadwa El Guindi, a scholar who never acted before nor since, delivers a heartbreaking speech. Love it.

TNG Season 3: “Evolution”​

This episode is immensely powerful. It's a juxtaposition of Dr Stubbs and revolving his life around his work, the return of Beverly, Wesley creating little monsters that someone talked to Picard about... then Picard gets assimilated, the Borg learn about nanites, then the Borg inject nanite probes into their victims to make them into Borg... oh wait, this episode is literally the biggest anti-Wesley story of the bunch because up til now he's saving the day cuz the adults are a boatload of twits or he's hitting on shapeshifting dignitaries who have their own prime directives to not be breaking... oh wait, I could have worded that plot synopsis a heck of a lot better... let me get a sodie pop run... (15 minutes later: toilet flushes loudly) Okay, I'm back and with a new perspective on this episode:

The scene where Wesley spits out how she's not been around is duly harsh and Wesley isn't the type to admit he's socially awkward. But Beverly's retort is by far the best and most mature thing and Trek series has done: "I'm here now, Wesley." and McFadden hits it out of the ballpark with such subtle and multifaceted nuance that just makes her return to the show so refreshing.

As is much of the episode and any number of parallels and allusions...

Of course, these Nanites - who started out mindlessly eating all the ship's computer chips because they're ruffled and taste better that way, even without the dip of sour cream'n'chives, grow to become self-aware and even forgiving - just as the humans had done. This is a core tenet of Trek on full display.

The incidental music continues to complement the show and even feels a step upward, which is no easy task given Ron Jones' contributions to seasons 1 and 2.

The special effects are a step upward - again, it's an accomplishment. One of so very many and season 2 was already 80% pulled together despite the strike.

Back to Dr Stubbs, there's a quaint little scene between him and Troi, with her culminating:

It is stretched so tight the tension fills this room. And if you finally fail, I fear it will snap.

She's basically saying Dr Stubbs is soooo consumed with his work (regardless of how rare this event is, but that's not important right now. Of course, the same can be said for the ship and its crew...) Of all the little subplots and allusions this story is belching out, Stubbs' is both the loudest in terms of social commentary, and the most integral -- despite being the most secondary and even most under developed as well as overrated. Indeed, let's whip out the salad forks and partake in a little word salad:

Once, centuries ago, it was the beloved national pastime of the Americas, Wesley. Abandoned by a society that prized fast food and faster games. Lost to impatience. But I have seen the great players make the great plays...

...With the knowledge of statistics, runs, hits and errors, times at bat, box scores. Men like us do not need holodecks, Wesley. I have played seasons in my mind. It was my reward to myself for patience. Knowing my turn would come. Call your shot. Point to a star. One great blast and the crowd rises. A brand new era in astrophysics. Postponed one hundred and ninety six years on account of rain.

It's all sopping with melodrama (and is ranch flavored! ) but somehow remains effective and I'm giving that a 30/70 (30% script, 70% actor embracing it). No, this isn't Michael Pillar being self-indulgent as everyone knows he digs baseball. It's telling something far out of the water and in plain sight. Except it's arguably not quite right. How many of you would prize fast food and faster games? Or, perhaps, why would you? Now that's the story's biggest foul ball, but few exist - which is good given how many homers it also belts out. The story is nothing but a bunch of "Y's", making it "Y's" indeed. Aren't homonyms-based-on-slang awesome? Also, if this story were about wild geese, would the previous issue be a "fowl ball"?

And I say overrated - for a phenomenon that only happens for x period of time, it's where having a calendar entry and as much preparedness genuinely comes in handy. Would he have otherwise fiddled to see this thing go off if it were not important?

Also, how many of y'all know what the old sport "barley-break" is? Pretty esoteric, since Stubbs seemed to know a lot about a game that in relational terms is also centuries old and no longer played today in the same form... what it evolved to become is a different story...

But enough of the arcane and esoteric fluff, TNG's shiny new style, set lighting, stories, stories' pacing, creativity with props (lawnmower engine parts, supercomputer heatsinks, and film negative canisters were used quite cleverly in TNG's run) and overall presentation are all big accomplishments. It's not hard to see why season 3 sets the platinum standard for Trek.

Whether or not it was thought of in 1996, Star Trek First Contact's using nanoprobes to start initial assimilation functions into a victim clearly was impacted by this episode's first use of "nanites" - ditto for TBOBW pt 2. If y'all thought that everything Picard knew got transferred to the Borg, that's still quite correct - and makes them more chilling. It might be a reason the Borg didn't deem it necessary to send over two cubes - their shiny new assimilation critters are a part of their (drumroll) evolution.

In short, this story packs in so much on many levels... and those themes are recursive and hold up for later stories in TNG's canon. True, the Borg were changed and tweaked and retconned to make them more interesting. For their nanoprobes it wasn't a retcon but a form of raw evolution.

Of course, considering the nanites were running around and virtually eating everything like candy, they sorta did put the ship at risk. But they weren't sentient. And what would Dr McCoy do, suggest giving them a spanking?! (Which is what Dr Stubbs did and then some...)

DS9 Season 3: “Improbable Cause”

The first out and out classic on the remaining list. The family theme is tenuous only because the Garak/Tain relationship isn’t revealed (or retconned?) until two seasons later. It’s a superb slow-build mystery, however, with Rene Auberjonois and Andrew Robinson in superb form. Great directing by Avery Brooks, who was one of Trek’s best and most underrated directors, and a tense score too. This episode prove beyond a doubt that DS9 had really found its voice and was playing to its strengths.

"In the Cards" is such a warm, funny, and charming episode -- a perfect tonic for the heaviness of the building-up-to-war arc. And it is, at its heart, all about family. The fraternal bond between Jake and Nog, Sisko's paternal care for his crew, the crew's bonds to one another (and how those bonds suffer when our heroes are beset). But mostly, of course, the love of Jake Sisko for his father, which kicks off the plot and drives Jake to truly heroic efforts on his dad's behalf. This episode is all the feels and all the fun, in a slight but hugely entertaining story.
