[Seven of Five]

Paradise Lost is the conclusion to the excellent Homefront. I can only imagine what a changeling infiltration story to end S3 and start S4 would have been like.

It is, perhaps, not quite as full of paranoia as the first part, but it's great because DS9 was always good at building these big races against time. The Sisko family chemistry is always nice to see in any episode, and Brock Peters added to that tremendously.

"Unification II" was a solid return for Spock, with a substantial, plot-shaping role. And his relationship with his father was very much a factor in his characterization, even with something of a resolution, via Picard, at the end. I suppose I could count Sela and her messed-up parental relationships as well, but meh -- I don't have to.

Oh Bill, Oh Bill, Wherefore Thou Art Bill:

TNG Season 1: “Haven”​

I don't know how one episode could put in a plot of a far better story, condensed into one scene, then proceeded to meader for thirty five minutes on slushy fluff - complete with completely unchecked 80s hairspray embellishing all that hair. I bet the studio was completely free of ozone that day... but full of passed out workers, hairspray back then smelled. Like real bad and everything... which begs the question toupee or not toupee...

So, let's get this rolling by referencing said scene, easily the strongest moment of the story:

DATA: Tarella was class M, much like your Earth, with similar humanoid life forms. Unfortunately they faced the old story of hatred out powering intelligence.
PICARD: There were hostilities?
DATA: Between the inhabitants of their two land masses, resulting in one group unleashing a deadly biological weapon on the other.
CRUSHER: And in the end the other became infected as well. Makes one question the sanity of humanoid forms.
PICARD: Can you identify the origin of the infection, Doctor?
CRUSHER: The Tarellians had reached Earth's late twentieth century level of knowledge. That's all you need if you're a damned fool. A deadly, infectious virus which at that modest level of knowledge is not difficult to grow.
TASHA: We learned the rest of the story in security training. Some Tarellians made it to other worlds only to die along with the populations they infected.
LAFORGE: It's pretty well covered in Academy training now, Captain. Many of them tried to avoid other civilised worlds as they escaped only to be hunted down and destroyed anyway.
PICARD: And it was believed that the last Tarellian vessel was destroyed eight years ago by the Alcyones.

That's pretty grim stuff, especially for TNG. Heavyhanded too. Tell vs show and all that as well, and yet it easily could have been worse. But it's there, has a lot of potential, deserves credit for chucking in that in any way shape or form because it's big enough... even if a lot of potential was shoved to the side because Mullet-Dude and Hairspray-Lady had to get it on as a plot point, because... looooooove and how it'll cure all the cooties like magic (as opposed to causing any number of them but that's not important right now...) Oh, okay, the story was trying to build up Mullet-Dude and Hairspray-lady so the audience would be genuinely shocked. Did that work? No. But by accident it was telling a story that could really have had some gusto. If not placed to the side.

The episode does counterbalance all that with just one simple line:

WYATT: Mother. Father. Forgive me, but I must. I'm going to try to continue the work to cure these people.

Though the episode does build up to this moment throughout its run time so it's not a major revelation but one that still holds the piece together and does a fair amount to tie in what's transpiring in the entire story. Its heart is in the right place.

Anyway, let's get the easiest nitpick out of the way:

TROI: Actually, Bill was concerned that you might be upset that I care deeply for him, too.

Early season one didn't make up its mind if he was Wil, Will, or Bill. It's not a terrible blunder. Let's all just be glad she didn't say:

TROI: Actually, John was concerned that you might be upset that I care deeply for him, too.

See? It easily could have been worse. And even more worse if Mr Bill actually came on screen... but I was never a fan of SNL, apart from when the Brady Bunch met the Partridge Family but that's another story... about a lovely lady...

Captain's personal log. I trust my concern over the problems of ship's Counsellor Troi are not based merely on losing a highly valuable crew member. But it seems to me that she is trapped by a custom of her home world which the facts of the twenty-fourth century life have made unwise and unworkable. I wish I could intervene.

Sigh, for the love of 1990s nuts...



...okay, I'm back now. So "Haven" feels like a warped version of Romeo & Juliet... warped seven, and on Crystal Lite (and Crystal Meth!) But that's season 1, where the hit or miss aspect is remarkably wide in gamut but even the crap stories have moments of interest. This one isn't crap but it glosses over some heady stuff as a throwaway plot point - like if you went to the toaster and decided to pop in 2 slices of toast and eagarly awaited them to pop up so you can melt butter on them as being the story except the bigger story is how all that cholesterol from the butter you're going to slather upon it is known to kill herds of cattle with just one smooth stroke of the butterknife.



When Bev of all people goes all haughty on our heineys* rather than being all Soap Opera Soppy(tm) when people are in neeeeeeeeed of help like how she's usually scripted as, you know there's a droplet of interest.

* 60s counterculture rock band, or Gen-X, or some Boomers, or Gen-Z, or-- oh sod it, some crap is just timeless and recursive and repetitive. Like tautology or reiteration.​

Notice they're in a room rarely seen, located in a corner neck of the Engineering hull no less because I'm a raw connoisseur of raw pedantry. Nice detail when the set designers put in the rear wall with the angled window. That and "please continue with the petty bickering" - Spock couldn't do that without being deemed "apocryphal" but this line simply gels for Data.


I would opine this is Lwaxana's best story, or one of her better ones if nothing else. Seasons 1 and 2 don't use her at her best (since the show wasn't always at its best either) but she's given a strong enough introduction, and with enough witticisms, with Majel being a consummate pro in acting out the material (even if she objected to some or any of it.)

That was quite refreshing, that whoosh of gusty breeze! But if you're wanting to do the same do, it isn't that hard to do, all one needs is a light socket and a wall switch and your nose prior to any cosmetic surgery done on it, which is important because plastic is an insulator and after attempting this method of hairstyle you're going to need cosmetic surgery for the schnoz anyway.

Oh yes it does, take away the biological warfare and other species wiping this one out of fear and there'd be no interesting story. Or a story taken in another direction. I've seen this story a few times and it's by no means the worst and it still makes some interesting points.

This takes the time old trope of chucking a soul/mind/electrical impulses/thingy from an organic brain into electronics/positronics, all while doing something more with it.

TOS and Dr WHO both used the same trope ("What are Little Girls Made Of" and "I, Mudd", and "Four to Doomsday" respectively, and DW doing it better IMHO.) TNG uses a completely different take - the ailing doctor - Ira Graves - doing it for solely his benefit but not for malicious reasons (e.g. galactic conquest, moohahaha), no mystery aliens are involved, and there's exploration of how a human mind in a robotic body could lead to hijinks and/or terror.

And it plays into the season 2 running arc of Data being a sentient being. (There were two arcs, actually: That one, and the more subtle one of Pulaski softening up over the season to accept Data as a sentient entity and even side with him.)

That isn't George Carlin but it should have been. And his daughter being unaware of other species is an interesting twist, if not imperfect - this isn't a backwaters shack they're living in for decades. Especially as Graves taught Soong all he knew. Geordi makes an interesting point - and what if season 3 didn't solidify yet revert consistently to the "I am an android and have no emotions" shtick? (I also love how the mirror reflection has a slight hue shift too, but it's a real reflection and not a post-production superimposition. )

[Seven of Five]

Wrongs Darker Than Death Or NIght is a good episode. It makes fascinating watching when someone who was idolised when younger, turns out to have a lot of shades of grey than originally perceived.

Kira's mother turning out to be a comfort woman for Dukat drives her to the edge, and as usual, Nana Visitor and Marc Alaimo are game.

"The Child" I know many think this episode hasn't aged well, but I am of the mind that it threads the needle and manages to use a troubling trope in a way I don't mind. And Marina Sirtis of course acts the fuck out of it. They really saved themselves with that casting decision, Troi was so underdone on the page that they needed an actress bursting with her own forceful personality to stop her from blanding into nothingness.

Plus, it makes me nostalgic for the days when season premiere's could just be a showcase ep for a random member of your ensemble, rather than meticulous set-up of your season story and themes. This is just a Troi ep, season 3 opens with just a Wesley ep, to varying degree "Redemption" and "Time's Arrow" are also just random Worf and Data stories...

Again as a TOS fan, I actually liked here that they showed Spock as a young child DID have VERY human responses to suddenly go from being an only child (and the center of attention) to getting a step sister and not being at all happy about it. I really liked that it showed an aspect of Spock not really touched on, but which made sense for the character.

Marina has to carry the episode it because it's Troi-centric and, boom, she hits a home run and then some.


The good bits first:

Season 2 starts out with some confidence and on every level for the show's revised format. Including the (only?) time we see Ten-Forward from the exterior - which is brilliantly done. Okay, those internal dampers are really doing a good job working since the ship turns and liquid-filled glasses don't react whatsoever...

Pulaski is quick to make a positive impression. She's cantankerous and sardonic, but is not a McCoy clone (in the way the EMH can be argued to be.)

Ditto for Guinan.

The "big debate" scene won me over in how Troi responds at the end, even if it's the life form conditioning her since it's also keeping her from feeling pain during childbirth. Worf, et al, are there if need be and they're all trained to deal with issues in space and this incorporeal being qualifies. For 1988, it's a pretty daring scene no matter how they would try it. I'll get back to this...

The episode is quick to frame season 2 with outer space being a dangerous place. Indeed, it's remarkable the alien of the week is ultimately benign considering what it's doing (playing Farmer Brown in collecting some seeds and growing them... it doesn't help that the same "lab rats in a cage" trope is used in the "Where Silence Has Lease" episode... on top of that, it doesn't help that "Silence" does the same trope not only with the intended theme of the season but far more effectively...

Now the downers:

The "big debate" keeps Troi sidelined. I believe the intent was for dramatic reasons as Troi is focused on her inner self and child while everyone debates wax lyrical over security risks and the rest of it. An unintended perception is that it looks like Troi is being deliberately left out. (But she ultimately isn't despite the framing of the scene, and what she says at the end overrides all else, so this being a "downer" is a mild one. And Marina really gives the performance needed to buoy this along with the rest of the episode.)

The concept of the incorporeal thing finding a male and then a female and violating them both... then harboring a child's bodsy that it rabidly accelerates growth on. Be glad this critter is not a villain! But this too fits into season 2's theme of danger, only this one has to make the viewer go into "what if" thinky mode instead of showing it outright.

Wesley's parental duties go only to the males, and Data. Maybe they're sidestepping a possible cliche - why would Troi not want to foster Wesley along with (the rest of the bridge crew)?

It's a bit cornball that the convenient life forms in their containment fields would be impacted by the incorporeal glowing ball of light that turned into Ian (which was TNG's only big chance to cop the name of an old Doctor Who companion because Marina is from the UK too and had auditioned for the role of Dayna in "Blake's 7" but that's another story), but that aside it didn't stop me from emoting regardless.

I need to see this one again - I recall rather liking it overall but it's been almost a decade since having seen it. I wonder how it will have aged.

"Dark Page" is an episode I rarely revisit, because I find it so affecting -- it's too sad to go back to! But I do think it's great, a strong end to Lwaxana on TNG.

Oh jeez, even more heartbreaking to think about Lwaxana having to then experience the death of her grandchild. In my headcannon I'm just going to believe that Lwaxana passed first...
