THE OBJECTIVE: A sudden-death elimination game in which we remove our personal favorite episodes from a themed list, until we arrive at the episode that is, if not the worst, at least the most disliked.

THE RULES: Below is a list of TNG, DS9, and VOY episodes written (at least partially) by Michael Piller.

Eliminate/save your favorite, or the one you deem the ‘best.’
Post something you love about the episode you are saving, and copy-and-paste the list with your choice removed.

You can use any standard you like to judge which option is "best." You can save episodes for being widely recognized “best Trek” classics, or for idiosyncratic qualities that no one appreciates but you.

But -- no tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode because you don’t think anyone else will, or because you feel it would threaten your preferred episode's chance to “win.”

One would have be blue-footed to think this episode's crazy:

TNG Season 3: "Booby Trap" (teleplay with Ron Roman and Richard Danus)​

Okay, I dig this one. It's got exploration of a long-past society, even if it's a bit glossed-over at times.

The booby trap idea of supplying it with enough of your own energy to kill you is pretty neat.

In typical Trek lore, it's about durh hooman bwain winning the day. Which has a time and place, and yet this is still a relic of TOS in some ways. In something automated, it's fairly obvious that the plot is straining worse than Worf on prune juice to justify having the human brain think of something out of the blue in the way that the computer cannot... but the episode still pulls it off, love them thrusters...

Geordi can't get it on, though in the penultimate episode of season 3, he's dating the same woman - both actor and character name but, shh, don't notice that.

Geordi asks inappropriate questions about personnel files since a soulless hologramatic creation isn't good enough as she drones on and on worse than me after downing a quart of coffee laced with drambuie, but it's still the computer that creates a facsimile of the ship's designer with a margin of error so massive that she's giving backrubs and other things -- even Geordi tells CompuBrahams to stop.

A well-written scene for sure that's very mindful of the characters in the scene, but Tim Russ more than hits a homer as an emotionless Vulcan having to endure ramifications of a mind-meld with a rogue Betazoid. The scene speaks more than a repetitive adumbration of it.

Okay, I know you are all expecting me to do this, so I'm going to just do it.








Saving "MOVE ALONG HOME".

I have defended this episode more than any other, more often than anyone else, and I am PROUD of that!

It is a GOOD episode, and I have listed my reasons countless times.

Saving "MOVE ALONG HOME".

I have defended this episode more than any other, more often than anyone else, and I am PROUD of that!

It is a GOOD episode, and I have listed my reasons countless times.

It's a very defend-able episode. Either for story concept or content, and how sci-fi should sometimes make a person feel uneasy, and not wallowing in what could be described as "a video version of a Hallmark card" with so much soppy sappiness and sappy sop. What really elevates it is this being one of the earliest episodes that gets Ferengi out of their rut - thank Armin Shimerman for that: https://trekmovie.com/2019/05/07/in...d-how-star-trek-deep-space-nine-tried-harder/

Being forced to learn as you play, with no instruction book, seems cooler than it should be. Especially when, not realizing it, most people already do this when attempting home repairs or additions, operating a car, dating, you name it. Which is for the best, a lot of those books describing how to date have been pure-dee-wrong...

I think it's brilliant too

I'm saving "Star Trek: Insurrection" - it's fun, I like the humour and that all the TNG characters get a reasonable amount of time onscreen. I'm fine with it feeling like an extended episode and I like that they don't bother trying to explain why Worf is there, he's just decided to visit his friends for his holiday.

Wesley creates a species that almost destroys the ship, and then out of boredom goes to hang out with a guy who likes rain and foul balls:

TNG Season 3: "Evolution" (teleplay, story with Michael Wagner)

It's more style over substance, but the Trekkian messages of obsession, taking time to breathe, creating new species in your spare time that are slowly devouring the ship to build themselves up with, who may also develop sentience so they'll know why they're going to kill you, getting along like it's on Sesame Street because both humans and nanites both did their share of bleeping up, and so on, still have an odd and cozy, welcoming charm. A shame this wasn't TNG season 1's opener in style and content, or at least if Q wasn't involved because big space jellyfish with a rudimentary sort of sentience and are attacking people are dumb. Noting that and on the flip side of things, how could Q have been wedged into this story? Well, "Evolution" didn't need a new character tacked on. Not just because this isn't a story that wasn't needing to be turned into a 2-hour timeslot "World Premiere". And even then, it didn't need Q. Groppler Zorn and his tentacled buddies did.

Wish I could find the clip of Ru'Afo's cool delivery on "If Picard or his people interfere, eliminate them." There's nothing more entertainingly ominous than a villain that underplays it (like Q in "Q Who" where he coolly says "oh pleeze" instead of doing a rant per the original script...)

First Contact is one of my favourite episodes of TNG so that first. I love the way that it tells a story from the alien race's point of view, and the alien race uses terms that are quite alien, as opposed to other alien cultures that are visited every week and speak like humans.
