The Most Disliked Episode of TNG, 2023 Edition - Season 6...

The casting for "Rascals" was the only good thing about that episode.

My next save is "Realm Of Fear".

Barclay is always a highlight, and this episode has a good creepy vibe.

"Man Of The People"
"The Quality of Life"
"Aquiel"
"Birthright, Part II"
"Suspicions"
"Rightful Heir"

"Man Of The People" Any chance for Marina Sirtis to play nasty is beloved by me.

"The Quality of Life"
"Aquiel"
"Birthright, Part II"
"Suspicions"
"Rightful Heir"

"Rightful Heir" A good performance from Michael Dorn, saves a kinda interesting mystery that turns into another Klingon politics story, at this point I was getting bored of Klingon politics. Always great to see Gowron though.

"The Quality of Life"
"Aquiel"
"Birthright, Part II"
"Suspicions"

My final save for this season is "The Quality of Life".

My wife hates that Data was about to let Picard and Geordi die to stop the exocomps from being used, and I can see why it's a black mark on him. But I just can't allow a Data episode be part of a 'Most Disliked' finals, so it gets saved.

Besides, it was interesting that we got to see Data have a unuque insight on artificial life.

"Aquiel"
"Birthright, Part II"
"Suspicions"

Must save the delightful "Suspicions." I love making fun of this one. Particularly Crusher's sudden passion for engineering.

I also love episodes with a lot of different aliens thrown together, which this definitely supplies.

Plus, it's Guinan's final series appearance! That deserves respect.

Meanwhile, "Aquiel" always feel like it should be fun to mock, but it's really just dull (besides the very last story beat). And "Birthright, Part II" is one of my most hated TNG's of all.

"Aquiel"
"Birthright, Part II"

Oh jeez, it's one-dimensional lecture time or yet-another-Geordi-love-life escapade. Both are pretty awful...

Saving "Birthright II". Like or dislike or anything complex in between, it's more exciting* than anything from "Aquiel"

* even with the frog fart symphony

Plus, Worf is sincere and means well. The story can't always make up its mind about if it's a prison colony or what not, but there was some potential in all its ideas. More than in "Aquiel".

"Aquiel" just has a blob, that's all so forgettable that it being so forgettable seems more memorably bad.

I'll save "Starship Mine". It's basically Die Hard on the Enterprise. It makes little sense sometimes but is a fun, dumb hour of Trek.

Best way to fix that adequate but unexceptional effort...
1. Replace Picard with Worf.
2. Triple the number of terrorists.
3. Make it a two-parter.

Worf realizing his heart has no room for shame was good, but my favorite part of this is Data discovering dreams.

Data's dreams were the only good part of that trainwreck of a two-parter. They should have chopped it down to one, and replaced it with my "Starship Mine" two-parter.

Saving "Birthright II". Like or dislike or anything complex in between, it's more exciting* than anything from "Aquiel"

I dunno... I kind of prefer "blame it on the dog" to "Worf the Klingon guru".

And "Aquiel" wins season 6, with "Birthright, Part II" being the runner up.

This was the same result as the 2021 game, and in 2019 it was the reverse. And for 2011 and 2018, "Birthright, Part II" also won season 6. There's clearly a majority consensus for not saving this episode.

I will post season 7 later today. Hope to see everyone there.

Thank you all for playing.

I don't want to accept this. Aquiel "wins"?
I don't want to accept this because in the 90s that was the very first TNG episode I bought on VHS.
(it shared a tape with 'Face of the Enemy' but was the first one on that tape)
It has a special place for me....
....even if these days it's not that great as it was nearly three decades ago.
But, it's not that bad?

I was surprised "Rascals" wasn't in the last few. That one was way worse than "Aquiel". Though I'll rank "Birthright 2" along with it. Both stank like a long-neglected diaper bucket.

At least "Face of the Enemy" was really good?
I'll save "Rascals" for the child actors, who were so well-cast and who so well captured their characters that it almost felt as if the adult actors had literally been de-aged.

Transcript due to low volume:

(Ro is drawing when Guinan enters)
RO JR: It's my mother. The funny thing is, I never really drew a picture of her when I was young. It's just, for some reason I wanted to now.
GUINAN: That's the wonderful thing about crayons. They can take you to more places than a starship.
RO JR: It's my turn, isn't it?
GUINAN: Only if you're ready.
RO JR: It's not quite as bad as I remembered it. Being a child, I mean. Well, we'd better get going.
GUINAN: Well, what's the hurry? I mean, the transporter will still be there. Why don't you pass me the royal blue.
RO JR: Here.
GUINAN: Thank you. Did you do this one too?
RO JR: I did all of them.
GUINAN: All of them?

As you can see, season 6 also has its own after school special, but it's not as blatantly nose-bumping as Yar's. But no worries, there's time for both crayons AND Star Trek!
