The Most Disliked Episode of STAR TREK - Season 1...

Farscape One

Admiral
Admiral
Here's the game. The basic idea is your standard elimination game. I'll provide a list of the episodes for each season and you need to eliminate your most favorite or the one you deem the 'best.' Please provide an EXPLANATION for why you are eliminating your choice and be sure to copy and paste the list with your choice removed. Finally, wait six hours and leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

No tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode because you feel they would threaten your preferred episode's chance to win.
Pretty simple. Enjoy! :bolian:

I'll get the ball rolling with BALANCE OF TERROR. Great introduction of the Romulans, great cat and mouse game between Kirk and the Commander, great subplots with the wedding and Lt. Styles. One of the best of the series, easily.

I love "What Are Little Girls Made Of?" I don't have a rational explanation, it was just the first episode of TOS I saw that ever grabbed my imagination. I started Trek as a TNG fan and had seen some other TOS eps before this that I despised ("Charlie X", "Mudd's Women"), but "Little Girls" was the first time I thought "maybe I can enjoy TOS also..."

"Where No Man Has Gone Before" was great. All the character's were real to me, especially the three important characters of Gary Mitchell, Lee Kelso and Elizabeth Dehner who were killed off during a pilot episode. Wow! Captain Kirk was a good looking, clever hero who can take a beating. I think he needs to work on his hand-to-hand fighting skills, though. And who can forget that pointy-eared, cold-blooded bastard, Spock. Not a lot of sexy women, only Yeoman Smith; I'm looking forward to see more of her in future episodes. I love this show. :luvlove:

This is actually harder than it seems, I love so many of these. I will pick Errand of Mercy, first appearance of the Klingons and Kor is one of the best. Also a lot of interesting back story and the action of the story was good. It also simultaneously set up a dangerous shooting war and then changed it into a simmering cold war all in 50 minutes.

Corbomite Maneuver is a perfect Star Trek episode. Drama, adventure, mystery, Starfleet' "ideals," Kirk being clever, Bones being cranky and challenging Kirk, etc.

SPACE SEED - still love it despite the nitpicks. The temporal inconsistencies (sleeping only 300 years, not to mention that for Khan to end up superior without the benefit of manipulation of precise genes (which wasn't even remotely possible back then and isn't really that way yet) it would take more than one or two generations' worth of controlled oompty-oomp to get there) alone are a bit fast and loose. And how Kirk is being a little too nice in sharing information when more generalized technical schematics could still be used and Khan could figure out Enterprise specifics after a while anyway, assuming he'd get anywhere - heck, show a teenager the schematics for the latest server processor without basic IC theory beforehand, it takes more than one elapsed hour to get there. It'd take those of us with IC theory a bit of time as well to understand enough of it. Kirk was a nit for showing the operations guide to his ship, which is a literal example of a plot vehicle.

But... The underlying discussion of human nature was still accurate and that's where Trek shines most. Add in Ricardo Montalban as Khan and that's why the episode is so far above the sum of its (sometimes flaky) parts.

Dagger Of The Mind is a favorite of mine simply because of Helen Noel :adore:. Kirk yelling for "HELEN" under the neural neutralizer showed how powerful the technology truly was. Adams was slowly breaking him in the chair. Helen stepped up to pick up the hero slack.

THE DEVIL IN THE DARK has always been a favorite. The real devil being the colonists was a great twist, and this episode embodies the best ideals of STAR TREK... resolving a conflict in a way that satisfies both sides AND creating a new understanding between them. I always wanted to see the Horta return at some point.

I'll take out TOMORROW IS YESTERDAY. I can't say it's my favorite, but somehow it was always one of those "feel-good" episodes. The unshakable memory is tuning in to watch Star Trek on TV in the 1970s, and this episode would come on, and for the first few seconds I would wonder if I tuned in an hour too late. And then, the surreal view of the Enterprise in a clear blue sky would make the day OK again. You'd think I would have caught on after a while, but 79 episodes was just enough to make me forget about it.
