I couldn't live with myself if I didn't save at least one Data episode.

And I'm going with one that I have shed several single man tears over, especially as I've gotten older.

"The Offspring" is my next save.

Several firsts happen here... Frakes' first directing gig, the double Picard facepalm when he talks to Data about the enormous responsibility he just took on. (If memory serves me, this is his first double facepalm.)

A wonderful episode, and a very sad ending, but with a phenomenally touching moment at the end when Data said he couldn't let his daughter's life go into oblivion because it enriched his so greatly. Watching Data teach his daughter... it was just a beautiful episode. What more can I say?

No matter how many times I see it, there is one piece of dialogue I can never agree with.

"I can give her attention, doctor. But I am incapable of giving her love."

My dear friend, Data... you could not possibly be more wrong.

It feels ridiculous to save item #99 on a list of so many greats, but I have seen no other episode (still) on this list more times than "Conspiracy." This is one I know I cannot rationally assess, it zaps me back so viscerally to discovering it for the first time on a middle-of-the-night syndicated rerun when I was a kid, back when I had to watch Trek by sneaking to the living room without making a sound in the dead of night (and then sit right in front of the TV watching it at super low volume, and I had to JUMP on the mute the second the credits start, the first notes of that fanfare would wake my parents up every time)

I totally had to suppress my reactions to the craziness at the end, I wanted to gasp in horror, but couldn't let myself because it would have been too loud! Such an intense viewing experience I got from this one.

ON EDIT: Ninja'd! But I've got good reasons too!

Yeah, it's hokey at times, but the tone and pacing are brilliant. The guest actors shine. Captain Tryla Scott being compromised was a genuine twist, given her build-up earlier in the story (red herrings and the exposition on how she was the fastest to rise in rank, even faster than Kirk.)

Seeing the Horatio destroyed and the scene that followed, music and all, really hit home the situation.

Being a loose arc with "Coming of Age" was, while embryonic for the trope, fairly cool.

Okay, the trendy 80s bold neon-pink crabs was borderline much - and not because of the inevitable slew of cheap jokes about how many people had crabs in whatever form they took... - only the tail sticking out and no scarring from the incision made when they entered the body make for a sore point. Okay, it's clearly stated that the crawling buffet enter through the mouth and not the anterior side - but come on, you know at least one walking shellfish needing only some lemon and garlic would be dumb enough to snip-snip from the wrong way around.

The other idea underplayed regarding this invastion is "size doesn't matter", though I'm going to disagree with that for reasons other than the obvious () because there's not much weight or gravitas to their presence crawling around. Which harks back to "the unexpected", but it just doesn't really work when seen on-screen. Off-screen, it actually does work - something nobody would expect would end up turning the other cheek, so to speak. Which reminds me of the following PSA: When going to Red Lobster, that "all you can eat" crab buffet will do more than ramp up your cholesterol levels if they'd been visited by unknown antagonistic life forms the night before. So when the first Starfleet officer was eating who knows where, that's the second-best way for these critters to compromise. The best way is while they're sleeping. I'm so glad the episode allows me to conjure up the beginnings of how this invasion could begin to take place. The script writer knew full well that to explain the beginnings would fall flat very quickly, and chose to focus on "the present" and denouement instead. Kudos , since that made for a far more effective story.

"Parallels" is such a fun, clever use of "space anomaly" AND "alternate universe" tropes. And making Worf the focal character is so fresh, since it's rare that Worf gets to be the star and not also have to deal with honor, Klingon politics, etc. He finally got to be the protagonist who just happens to be Klingon, rather than the Klingon protagonist.

The uncommented-upon Alternate Wesley guest spot was a particularly delightful touch.

It feels ridiculous to save item #99 on a list of so many greats, but I have seen no other episode (still) on this list more times than "Conspiracy." This is one I know I cannot rationally assess, it zaps me back so viscerally to discovering it for the first time on a middle-of-the-night syndicated rerun when I was a kid, back when I had to watch Trek by sneaking to the living room without making a sound in the dead of night (and then sit right in front of the TV watching it at super low volume, and I had to JUMP on the mute the second the credits start, the first notes of that fanfare would wake my parents up every time)

I totally had to suppress my reactions to the craziness at the end, I wanted to gasp in horror, but couldn't let myself because it would have been too loud! Such an intense viewing experience I got from this one.

I was only 12 when I saw Conspiracy in first run and it similarly blew me away. It was my favorite episode of S1 back then. So moody and intense, I remember absolutely loving it.

Where I was, TNG aired at 7pm on Saturdays. My most visceral memory was my phone ringing right after the episode ended, and me picking it up, and hearing a parent upstairs pick it up at the same time. And, before anyone could say anything, my friend on the other end of the line screams "HOLY $#!+ THAT WAS FU€#ING AWESOME!!!! WHAT THE FU€K!?!!!??" I wasn't unable to focus on the rest of the conversation because I was sure I'd have questions to answer with my parents!

"Where No Man Has Gone Before" gets pulled. One of my top-5 TOS episodes, it shows how this series, unlike the majority of the other spin-offs, came right out of the gate knowing exactly what it was. Shatner and Nimoy had very good grasps on their characters. Production values were excellent for the time. It was a perfect human drama wrapped up in a fascinating science fiction package.

Only envious that he preferred 7, and -- wait, what were we talking about again?

Oh yes. This is probably VOY's best and at the same time its least-continuity-warping* Borg-a-thon adventure.

Janeway somehow manages to do a deal, and more amazingly continues to out-think the Borg. And it feels credible.

In part because the episode is more about the Borg than the throwaway one-off baddies, Species 8472.

The new tone for the show, focusing on Borg and a larger struggle with disconnection from the Collective having been in it all her life, was great. Season 4 is easily VOY's best, even if it's engaging in small universe syndrome by making it so Borg-centric, the way they did it worked. (for me, YMMV.) It helped that Jeri Ryan could act and not be a 1990s Roddenberryist token trapped in a catsuit that was harder to get sewn into than Julie Newmar as Catwoman. Especially as I'd rather see Chakotay wear something similar. VOY missed out on some opportunities...

John Rhys-Davies is always a treat to see, though I'd prefer him as a proper officer in dealing with the Borg. Then again, fresh off of "Sliders" as Professor Arturo, that would be typecasting and he's relishing the role of DaVinci to the point I make the connection via name only, not him on screen being a completely different personality - just without Wessonality, that's Florence Henderson's shtick* post Brady Bunch.

Tapestry is a fine episode, again one of TNG's best, which again involves Q. I love how Picard thinks life will be better because he chooses not to fight the Nausicaan in the bar.

Of course the trouble with that was his life changed irrecoverably, as he became a by-the-numbers man who was passed over for promotion again and again because he wouldn't take risks.

Fascinating.

I know what you mean, this one needs actual strategy to figure out an efficient way to attack it. I think I'm trying to scroll from the top and stop at the first one I see that I LOVE, because honestly at any given moment I have like 150 different episodes that are all THE BEST, and many of those are still on here.

I am quite tempted to save "Q Who", which is an incredible classic, but it's not aging quite as well as "Call To Arms", which is my next elimination. What a cliffhanger! What an impressive crescendo of so many different plot threads! One of the greatest examples of what DS9 could achieve by painting on such a large canvas.

A wonderful tale about life in a, very similar, yet utterly brutal universe. Mirror Spock's goatee is almost enough to win the episode by itself. Seeing Kirk and his crew doing their best to fit in with their evil counterparts is both tense, and an so much fun.

It's an utter joy to watch.

I'll eliminate DS9's Necessary Evil next. A cracking-good noirish procedural episode of Trek, and the highlight of DS9's second season, showing how dark and complicated the show could truly get, and that Duet wasn't just a momentary stroke of genius, but the start of a trend. It was also the first time Dukat seemed to be truly menacing rather than just a charismatic showboat. One of the few "perfect tens" in Trek history. I can't believe they ranked it only at 69!
