Game The Most Disliked Episode Directed By Les Landau

"Future Imperfect" - it's fun and the alien is quite sweet. There's no actual peril even though it feels at one point like there could be.

Saving “Family” – great location photography, guest stars and characterizations. The Picard brothers’ verbal sparring and cathartic brawl in the muddy vineyard, followed by wine-and-song…just the rehab visit Jean-Luc needed.

Second Skin is a great episode for Kira. What a nightmare for her to wake up as a Cardassian! Ghemor is also a very sympathetic figure, so I like that he made a reappearance in Ties of Blood and Water.

I think that saving "Clues" is getting to be a full time job for me. But it's a great episode, with crazy mysteries, a misbehaving Data, and Troi being a bad-azz.

Aww, man! Most of the good ones are gone. But a couple are left.

TNG Season 2: "The Schizoid Man"

A passable tale, inspired by all of the TOS stories that involved a computer being taken over by an incorporeal being by whatever let's-not-explain-it reason that may have worked back in the day of vacuum tubes but not since, they still found a novel way of initiating the trope - it's rather good, IMHO...

As usual, Brent Spiner shines when playing a possessed and/or evil being, and here he shines.

The story's name was inspired by an episode of "The Prisoner". The actual episode does not.

Awesome scene; season 2 had its act more together than what it's sometimes credited for. Troi's lampshading of the issue is rather well done, IMHO. "Radical acceptance" to the max... and Spiner? Sheesh, the dude could open up a biological encyclopedia and recite the section on what skunk scent glands are for and why said skunk sprays it, complete with using one of those perfume sample spritzers to annoy any ol' passer-by with, and it'd still be entertaining as all heck. Even if said spritzer had that garish perfume/cologne replaced with actual skunk stink and when that goo gets into any porous surface... oh dear...

I can safely say that to know this episode was to love it. And to love it was to watch and know it. Those who knew it, loved it, while those who did not know it, loved it from afar. As with all things Data.

(Yeah, you knew I'd go there...)

Saving "Investigations" - I like the arc that is concluded in this episode and I like the "Breakfast with Neelix" idea.

I'm going to start with his first one in the franchise, "The Arsenal of Freedom".

Great action, great pace, great story... and EVERYONE got utilized well. Even Troi came across as doing her job well. This was also a great Geordi story... and I always felt this situation was why Picard later made him chief engineer. Geordi proved himself to be an effective leader, keeping a cool head in a battle while mentoring younger officers and dealing with an insubordinate Lt. Logan. Arguably the most important job on a starship, being chief engineer called for all these traits, and he had them in spades here.

+1

I'd be quick to have saved it as well. The only nitpicks are three:

1. Despite being on an alien planet, Crusher is so certain on the type of root she's having Picard take a nice big lick on. At least this isn't a crew of otherwise-sentient dogs that landed on the Planet of the Cocozoids and Doctor Bowser tells Captain Plotthound* to take a big ol' lick from that big drooping chocotree over yonder and they didn't have a story whose planet and tree species names had "Cocoa" in big bold letters to warn them with... well, the show really would have ended after one reason... zoiks...

2. Maybe it was a budget constraint, but the probe attacking the ship should have been a different model and scaled to look more convincing. Maybe have it vanish at the last second, though the schmaltzy "We zapped it" moment at the end did have some charm - so this one isn't a biggie...

3. I forgot this one because I had so much fun blabbering about with the previous two points. Maybe it involved Roscoe P Coltrane Leland T Lynch constantly whining and nagging hapless Geordi and Roscoe's acting was a bit cod...

* yes, really :guffaw:! I would look up an encyclopedia when it comes to barking up the right tree like this!! Also, if pets look like their owners and you know Picard prefers dogs to cats (boo!!), I also found the perfect image to now play with photoshop with... oh dear...

TNG Season 5: "Ensign Ro" because I really enjoy the titular character."

Ro is a perfect addition to the series and she's one of season 5's saving graces no matter what the episode was, and Guinan's first scene with her is truly inspired, thought-provoking stuff. Usually, when someone who "doesn't fit in" goes to a public place, they're told they make everyone else feel uncomfortable - if approached at all. We saw something not unlike this before with Barclay, but with Ro, who is not shy despite having a background of abuse, still shares some archetypal manifestations. Being Bajoran, they could also cover concepts in "The Next Phase" that couldn't be done with Barclay because he's just another boring human.

I save Voyager's 'The Chute'. What a great Harry and Tom episode.

Up next is the other idea from which they copped to develop the Borg with:

TNG Season 2: "Samaritan Snare"

Witness:
  • Both scavenge the galaxy for technology and toys to play with; neither has any R&D department that sits there researching for its own sake. If either had, they'd probably be impossible to defeat
  • Both claim their level of strength
  • Both don't see anyone initially as a threat but know how to manipulate them
On the other hand:
  • The Pakleds are quite vicious on an upfront level (look at the brutal treatment of Geordi and needed time to recover from his injuries), the Borg are generally loud and shouty and with the same bland ol' catchphrase and only assimilate people with easily-removable egg whisk attachments that leave only a mild headache as Picard seemed to be up and atom again very quickly.
  • The Pakleds are surprisingly smarter and used luring as a trick. Again, the Borg just announce how they're going to crash the party and the Borg never seem to change their ways - every invasion is always one cube, which is barely defeated but they don't seem to notice, much less care.
    • Of course, this may be due to the Pakled's relatively small ship complement - but this is one small ship in this episode; they're cagey enough to do a lot more damage and not just be an oversized bulldozer in the shape of a bullion cube (but beef- and not chicken- flavored). There's nothing that defines them as being a ragtag group of four; there's a whole planet or system of them pillaging and raiding. They don't know how things work but they sure know how to use them... (which is cringey, yet this episode somehow sells it better than other shows trying the same trope, which says more about how it's not always the idea but how it's executed that makes or breaks the deal?)

And I do believe the episode is supposed to make the viewer feel uncomfortable. The execution is definitely up for grabs, however.

Also, GREBNEDLOG is an anagram of "BERN LOGGED", yet there's no Doctor Bern in this story... of which gives Picard, Pulaski, and even Wonderboy Wesley a few decent backstory bits to appreciate. Even when Picard is awkwardly fed up and waddles to the back bench to read while Wesley sits there all po-faced and such.

It's not the best episode, but there are definitely a lot worse.

I was going to save "Samaritan Snare" just because of one line that never fails to make me laugh.

"Teeth are for chewing."

Saving "AFTERIMAGE". Because NO episode with Garak in it deserves to be 'Most Disliked'.

(Unless it is a 'Most Disliked Garak Appearance' game. :) )

TNG Season 4: "Half a Life"

VOY Season 1: "Time and Again"
VOY Season 6: "Virtuoso"
ENT Season 1: "Sleeping Dogs"

Time and Again was my first experience with Voyager, and while the overall premise was weird to say the least, the execution was pretty good. Bonus points for Picardo's snark as the Doc, and for the unique fashions.

TNG Season 4: "Half a Life"
TNG Season 5: "Unification I"
TNG Season 5: "Conundrum"

The Forsaken is next. I think Lwaxana's part of the episode showed her at her most heartwarming when Odo is forced to go to his gelatinous state.

TNG Season 5: "Unification I"

VOY Season 6: "Virtuoso"
ENT Season 1: "Sleeping Dogs"

Hmm, close call between "Time's Arrow" and "Unification." I'll go with "Unification I", I adore this one. It's so epic, the Trek universe feels so big and real in this two-parter.

TNG Season 4: "Half a Life"
TNG Season 5: "Conundrum"
TNG Season 6: "Time's Arrow, Part II"

VOY Season 6: "Virtuoso"
ENT Season 1: "Sleeping Dogs"

VOY Season 6: "Virtuoso" So, sue me, I enjoy the Doctor's singing. The episode has some on point sass from Janeway; that scene between her and Seven where Janeway has to explain fans and famail is fun; and that final where Seven gives the Doctor a fan letter she wrote really showcases the depth of their friendship.

TNG Season 4: "Half a Life"

DS9 Season 3: "Destiny"
DS9 Season 7: "Image in the Sand"

And now I will save "Time's Arrow, Part II" Damn that was a satisfying premiere. I wish it had been a three-parter, I could have spent so much more time with the crew in old time San Francisco. My only quibble with this one is that the pacing goes a little slack when most of them return to the 24th century.

I love the terrifying simplicity of the teaser. That creepy shot of the Devidians walking by the oblivious Twain. So good.
