Wow, they loved this guy! I didn't realize he was given the DS9, VOY, and ENT series finales, plus so many other prominent episode slots. Though I did come to associate his credit with quality, so I see why.

Also, funny coincidence that he did 13 episodes each of the three series he worked on.

I'll start with a save for his first one -- "The Assignment." I adore this episode! The atmosphere and tension is masterfully created. It was great to see Rosalind Chao cut loose and really show what she could do. A fantastic showcase for Rom. The script is so smart, too -- I LOVE that opening scene where she deconstructs how the Trek body possession trope usually plays out...

O'BRIEN: You'll have to be patient. The communications and sensor relays are distributed throughout the entire station.
KEIKO: You know your wife well, Miles, but she knows you even better. I know you're just playing for time until you can get to your friends. Julian, Dax, Captain Sisko, I know they'll all want to help you. The Captain may even allow you to do what I'm asking. At least until someone figures out a way to trap me in some sort of stasis field or some other clever device you're already dreaming up. And you know what? It might work. You might be able to stop me. But I promise you one thing. If you do, Keiko will die. All I need is a split second to cause a massive brain haemorrhage and she's gone. I know this is a difficult adjustment for you to make, but we don't have a lot of time.

Comparing this to Little Orphan Annie,

DS9 Season 6: "Time's Orphan"​

Big Daddy WarBrien-- ugh, can't think of silly word twists so I'll just get into the meat of the story and why I saved it first (cuz it's cool)...

But first, the acting - it's played so sincerely - one easily buys into the nightmare situation despite a convenience or two. How can anyone not like this?

Just one scene that defines and nails the story's high concept horror show:

This intellectualism is taken only so far, since in a 43 minute episode they were trying to focus and juggle on so much and we all know we'd want to see how this would play out...

And yet I don't know what's more interesting in terms of possible takeaways from that magical Kodak moment-

a) the fact that Keiko's comment instantly creates the opposite mindset of "sparing the pain and devolution that little Molly had when her parents appeared to abandon her cruelly for a decade and more". I appreciate Keiko trying to be all clinical n' stuff but it doesn't feel right. Even if Miles said it, hyping up "temporal prime directive" and all, I'm still not sure it was a good notion to bring up, especially as there's not enough plot time to really see them deliberate. The notion isn't necessarily bad but the implication of not doing so - they could have showed a lot more, even in showing why trying to undo the relative temporal damage made, would be the best choice.
b) Shh. No Borg talk allowed unless it's anti-Borg in content. "Reassimilation" indeed... Stupid joke aside, Bashir - in deciding there may be no opportunity to fix the whoopsie - just gets on with the next best possibility, thus preventing the audience of being deprived of a whatifism revolving around seeing the scenes that follow with having to try to get the new aged Molly to fit in. (Spoiler alert, they do fix things and lil' Molly comes back A-OK in the end. I can't help but wonder if a 2-parter may have fleshed out more in repercussions before the magic reset button occurs. It's a strong enough theme and exemplar with the acting of all involved. )

I was stuck to the set for the entire hour and watching this high concept drama play out and it is absolutely wonderful yet creepy stuff. Highly recommended, in fact. What would happen indeed if this somehow happened in real life. It'd be traumatic for all, in differing ways and the episode nails it - while keeping Treknobabble to a minimum. It's one of DS9 better fillers that deals with the O'Briens.

And only DS9 could do this episode without it feeling excessively contrived, thanks to the O'Briens being there.

Since the DS9 and VGR finales are double episodes, he actually directed 14 of each.

My first save from his list is "CALL TO ARMS".

The best season finale of DS9, and absolutely a top 3 in the franchise. (I might even put it as #1, simply because the character work done on SO MANY leads and recurring, and being interwoven seamlessly with the plot and story, edges it past even TNG's ultimate season finale.)

Beautifully directed, especially that DS9 fight with the Dominion, which one of, if not the, last motion control battles done for STAR TREK. Every second of this episode was perfect.

And those final moments... I dropped my jaw and yelled at the tv, "YES! Go kick some Dominion ass!" That was probably THE most torturing summer waiting for a new season I ever had.

(Couple that with the "SCORPION" season finale at the same time, it really was a hard summer waiting for the new season.)

That was going to be my next save, because it was one of my favorites of season 6. Great concept and excellent acting by EVERYONE.

 

Children of Time is a big episode, and very bittersweet. I loved meeting the descendants of the Defiant crew, especially at the end when O'Brien finally decides to help them.

Older Odo telling Kira his feelings always gets me, as well as his actions in ensuring the colony doesn't happen in order to save Kira. It was such a shocking ending.

A great sendoff for Kor, and a lot of character development for Martok. An episode centering on two of the biggest badass Klingons around... how is it not a win?

Fun fun fun, in the sun sun sun (or at least the level of power their tiny engines put out is equivalent to one)

DS9 Season 6: "One Little Ship"​

This is another high concept episode, only this time it's in the spirit of fun - rather than robbing a person of their life only to see them (a) devolve and (b) mommy standing up for the great cause she should remain that way despite having been robbed of 10 years with her parents.

This is the one episode where talking about "shrinkage" is genuinely funny...

This episode is lovely as it starts out with a TOS-style unknown-to-a-point, but they know enough how to take precautions. And no worries, they get real big again in the end. Which reminds me, wasn't that nebula anomaly thing blue?

The Jem'Hadar takeover could have come at a better time, at least in terms of telling a story.

The whole thing is just fun. A sidestep from the Dominion War while managing both fun and serious.

"Before and After" was a well-imagined what-if; the look at Kes's future family was interesting, and the story of what had happened to Voyager in the interim was creative. One of Jennifer Lien's better outings.

I'm going to save Juggernaut. I really like this episode for it's focus on B'elanna and her anger and self loathing. I also liked the relationship between Tuvok and B'elanna and it's a real shame we never really see them interact this way again in the series. The humanisation of the Malon was a nice touch as well.

A Time to Stand was the epic continuation of Call to Arms, so it's an easy save. Everything is going to hell, and it was portrayed so well. I particularly like Bashir's change from usual cheery optimist to a grim realist.

"The Ascent" is one of those eps I rediscovered in recent years and found it to be much better than I had previously given it credit for. It's a smaller-scale episode, but I like the whole thing and think it completly succeeds in executing the objectives it sets for itself. And I can't stop being impressed with just how well they executed that alien planet. Great locations work, it's shot well, plus the post-production tinkering they did to make it look cooler -- everything is working together there, it's all clicking together seamlessly to create this great effect.

Just hit me that this is a Odo/Quark A-story with Jake/Nog B-story, and two of those actors are recently deceased. RIP Rene and Aron.

I reject this numbering. Biggest fear: in the streaming world, I don't want to be subjected to the horror of only having the Part I & Part II edits of the 2-hour eps available to stream, which is what happens if you think of them as distinct installments. (It's so weird to me that this is the route CBSAA has gone) Imagine -- no root beer scene! No Garak/Bashir farewell in the ruins of Cardassia! The world is already dystopic enough...

I never noticed that before, and you are dead-on. "Juggernaut" is another one where a recent rewatch caused me to suddenly appreciate it

Not sure if this is the best of the available choices, but whatevs -- I loved "Bride of Chaotica!" I always enjoyed the way "Captain Proton" homaged the classic sci-fi serial tropes, from the square-jawed whitebread hero to the Ming-of-Mongo-style villian to the 50s-style "futuristic" tech. Seeing Janeway getting into the spirit of things and hamming it up as the titular bride, and the EMH prim and proper as a B-movie president (right down to a little badge reading "President of Earth" on his lapel) -- that was just a hoot. "Remember -- you're the queen!"

Sacrifice of Angels is my next easy save. Ziyal's death always gets me, watching how it affects Garak, Kira and Dukat. The huge fleet battle against the Dominion was really well done as well. So good, in fact, they used parts of it in the finale.
