Next up in these themed elimination games: BORG EPISODES.

THE RULES. The basic idea is your standard elimination game. Below are a list of Borg episodes from TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, and PIC. Eliminate your FAVORITE or the one you deem the 'BEST.' Please provide an EXPLANATION for why you are eliminating your choice and be sure to copy and paste the list with your choice removed.

Leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

No tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode just because you feel it would threaten your preferred episode's chance to win.

Thanks to @Farscape One for vetting the list with me. :bolian:

Uh ... DS9 Emissary? Could I eliminate it first? Or has it been pre-eliminated 'cause it's awesome?

I went back and fourth on "Emissary" when we played this list last year, and again before posting it just now. Each time I kind of thought "not enough Borg maybe? Is it just setup?"

But it's also the Battle Of Wolf 359 and very much about the aftermath -- and I guess our first instance of xB discrimination! -- so that's an argument for inclusion. Just edited the first post to put it on. Eliminate away if you like. :bolian:

Saving Emissary. The epic Battle of Wolf 359 notwithstanding, the episode goes deeply into how the Borg destory lives, even after they are gone. Seeing Stewart back as Locutus was pretty cool as well.

The Borg's big-screen level-up was impressive, so saving "First Contact." The Borg were so thrillingly terrifying here, they really put the fear back in them. (Though of course Voyager stood ready to Unimatrix-Zero it right out again)

I still can. not. believe. they made the Borg Queen work as well as they did. That is one NARROW path they are aiming for, and they absolutely nail it. Deserving of it's rep as TNG's best film.

"The Gift" is a favorite Voyager of mine -- the Kes/Seven counterpoint is fantastically handled. This is a great Trek examination of so many things about the human condition.

Scorpion, Part I is my first save.

It had a great cliffhanger, and I just loved how desperate Janeway is to try to continue her mission towards Earth by brokering an awkward peace.

The teaser is top-notch here, as well.

Taking out "I, Borg". As with arguably all of the best Trek episodes, whether or not you agree with Picard's decision, there are good arguments to be made on both sides. I think Jonathan del Arco gives a great performance here, going from drone to individual, and his ability to sway both Guinan (Goldberg is perhaps even better here than usual) and Picard (Stewart's regression to Locutus, and his unusually cold demeanor throughout the episode is unsettling) speaks to how the Borg may be a Force of Nature that must be contended with, but is also a race of slaves forced to be something many of them would choose not to be if they had the option.

Saving Survival Instinct. I tend to prefer those stories that explore the aftermath of the Borg experience, in this case the guilt associated with having been Borg. If I am being honest, Ms. Ryan was better in other episodes, but I love the other former Borg written for this episode. Not to mention, I find the b-story about meeting kooky, generous aliens to be charming.

    Saving "REGENERATION".

When I first heard the Borg were going to be in an ENTERPRISE episode, I was pissed. VOYAGER overused them to the point they became villains with no teeth.

But this episode made the Borg scary again. I was very pleasantly surprised. My only gripe was the Phlox solution, but other than that, this was an excellent use of the Borg.

Seeing Hugh disconnected and having to learn trust as much as the enterprising denizens of the Enterprise, even I still have to give this episode second thoughts regardless.

While some of the story is forced, or at least with some rough dialogue, they did present multiple sides to how to deal with the Borg and the reason to "introduce individuality" is fairly sound. del Arco is also stealing the show as Hugh but there's clearly nary a duff performance in this episode.

If the goal is to change an opinion for a positive turnaround, Guinan and Picard still seem a little quick to change their minds so fully and so quickly considering the strong emotions they had only a couple of seasons prior. Guinan was still quite furious over how it's impossible to reason with them (but still kept an open mind as she still told Picard that one day, perhaps, they could be reasoned with - which, in that episode, seemed a little "rub the cat's fur the wrong way" in the opposite direction if one doesn't consider Guinan sees time and dimensions in the way most species don't and can't...

..Though Janeway managed to figure out how to do just that, to reason with them, and that adage of a scorpion still became true anyway because that's how the Borg are programmed, reiterating that hive disconnection and deprogramming is the only way to rescue those enslaved in what could be called a cult... But the Borg and Federation were both presented as two extremes of the same basic underlying idea, per Maurice Hurley as I recall... after finding out about his unused GEN script, which would have made a better use of Kirk IMHO, he was an unsung hero for the show too...)

Picard too manages a modicum of reconciliation and reconsideration after being convinced to have a picnic with Hugh. Actually, I'd be more fun in a picnic despite having a personality not unlike a robot, but that's another story... but the Borg weren't exactly an allegory for people in the ASD... we just need more people like Guinan and Geordi (who pretty much snapped Hugh out of it) in this world, who got the ball rolling for the Picard type. The story has chutzpah and it's easy to imagine the contrivances being far, far worse.

The episode also considers the Borg as a race that built itself up via incubation centers, using their advanced technology and stealing others to re-engineer or get shiny new ideas from -- and had zero interest in other life forms as such... ...save for humanity at this point thanks to Q WHO having Picard introduce himself and subsequently TBOBW where the Borg decided they would convert other species. "Descent" doesn't waver from this (it's focusing on the aftermath, noting the discarded plan to attack wouldn't have begun to work), it's VOY and STFC that finally show other species being converted.

So it's nowhere near the worst of the bunch and, indeed, season 5 was bold in doing something other than reusing the same trope of "Borg invade, how do we stop them, let's modify phaser frequencies but those will work once or twice, pew pew four dozen times, yay we're saved." Even the incidental music works in some key scenes and the latter half of TNG was a real mixed bag. ("Descent" also happens shows the worst of the new incidental music style - which didn't hurt ratings at the time and fit the artistic expression of the creators... and yet the teaser commercials sold lively music compared to the actual episode and it still befuddles...)

(then again, their teaser is reusing TBOBW score instead of using the one from "I Borg", which only proves what a teaser can do. But, dang, TBOBW's score is reused with some tact and worked a lot better in those scene clips used than the symphony of assimilated flatulent frogs...)

Pretty much the Borg's last gasp of greatness, though two other episodes just about tie for this spot:

    VOY Season 5: “Dark Frontier”

Is saved, and it packs an exciting punch.

The music feels like a hark back to TOS's style, while still being its own.

Oh Suzanna, why don't you play a role badly? Susanna Thompson is quick to make the Borg Queen her own, on par with Alice Krige but still making the role her own. Another actor does beg the question of Queen quantity and distribution, but it's not a big thing. And to be fair, there's a reason to have a focus of locus, hence the Queen being envisioned - a hundred drones singing in unison do get boring after a while.

There begs a few questions given Seven's situations in Scorpion and moreso for The Raven, but not major ones as I don't remember all the nitpicky stuff.

The reason for letting VOY go, to study a partially un-assimilated drone, isn't a half-bad one. There's always something new and different to be discovered, even if not as frequent after assimilating thousands of species. The Borg are relentless to acquire knowledge, all knowledge, even if there's inevitable redundancy.

Okay, seeing Seven's parents assimilated was a bit on the melodramatic side and used for padding. It's sorta obvious. But it led to a cool rescue scene.

The story too is on the melodramatic side... remember in STFC and onward where Borg use kinky tubules to inject people with some quaint visuals of nanoprobes being injected into the recipient? Well, VOY is going for the gold in this episode by that good ol' trope of "BIG EPIC SELF-REPEATING CANNIBALIZING ZILCH" where - in this instance - the Borg will just launch some sort of bio-boomboom thing that will spray around Earth's atmosphere oodles and oodleys of magical nanoprobes that will fall through the atmosphere, somehow not melt or fry due to physics, and end up attaching themselves onto everyone waddling around over time down there. Never mind if Seven has to program each one individually as-- just how many of these lil' fritters are going to be dispersed around this 24901 mile-circumference spherey planet thingy again, anyway? As each subsequent story uses another take on the "BIG EPIC SELF-REPEATING CANNIBALIZING ZILCH" trope, how does one continue to do bigger and more epic things before it all looks unbelievable? Like the phasers returned where it's emphasized they can only be used once, maybe twice, but still keep a tickin' after zapping down half a dozen Borg... what next, Borg smiling as they reflect phaser shots from all known frequencies tabulated and without heuristic extrapolation to cover frequency ranges beyond the currently known set but maximum to the equipment known to produce the ranges and with sibling elements?

Saving Drone. Great character creation on the part of Bryan Fuller, creating a great contrast between Seven of Nine and high ideals. It was a good use of Trekkian optimism.

Though I remain worried that the hideous Icheb death will ruin it the next time I rewatch,
Next save to "Imperfection"! I love this one, it's just beautiful, makes me cry every time. I love how cleanly and succinctly the Trekkian ideals are dramatized in that climactic Icheb/Seven/Doctor/Janeway face-off.

It's been a little while, but what a "most disliked..." to come back to!
I'm going to save "Unity" - I thought this was very good episode, and a great take on the Borg. It evoked an origin story - a "How the Borg Became and Other Stories" type affair. The earnestness of Riley Frasier was a bit too good to be true, but Chakotay and Orum were excellent. And the voice of the Cooperative was incredibly chilling - even when saying/chanting benevolent things. Creepy.
I wonder if the Cooperative kept to their ideals even as they forcefully "reassimilated" their aggressors, or did the just regress to the Borg we know and loathe?

    Nepenthe was PIC's finest episode.

    Poor Hugh, though. :(

At least his death served more of a purpose in the ongoing story, as opposed to those of Icheb and Maddox.

The rest of the episode, though, is like a big comfy nostalgia blanket. The bittersweet backstory with Riker, Troi and Kestra brings a tear to my eye just thinking about it.
