The Monster Maroons

Technically speaking if you go by the Bluray transfers where we see the actual colour then It’s not so settled. The command tunics were supposed to show as green and on the Blurays we see that strange green/gold hue.

I wouldn’t accept anything from Berman Trek on the canonicity of what is in TOS.

Still catching up on the this thread but I really think that my way of viewing the green or gold situation fills in the gaps.

It is canon that the TOS command shirt color is CALLED "gold" in-universe because Sisko says so. It is also canon that said shirt color is actually made with a dye that LOOKS greenish in some conditions/fabrics and more yellow in others.

Simple as that :)

If you need more support, here are two more thoughts.

Iron Pyrite, aka "Fools Gold," actually leaves a green streak on paper, whereas if I recall correctly the actual element gold does not. So calling a greenish shirt "gold" is not out of the realm of what a crew might informally do.

The classic military uniform from WWII was called the "browns and pinks" and the pants really are not all that pink, it's just kind an approximation.

Put it all together and I think that there is really no inconsistency here. The shirt color is called "gold," but the dye is green and shows green on some uniforms like the dress uniform, yet on the standard duty uniform it looks yellow much of the time. That makes sense to me.

Sigh, Geordi and Worf were not wearing gold in season two of TNG, they were wearing green based on colors designed in Star Trek. When the designers re-designed TNG uniforms for season 3 these characters and others in that division were wearing a mustard yellow not GOLD.

Because I'm sure everyone really wants to hear this...ready...sure?

According to the website Star Trek Costume Guide, the early TNG uniforms are actually orange-tinted or green-tinted yellow for no obvious reason, but the blue and red lighting used in early TNG was intense enough that even onscreen a viewer cannot really tell an orange one from a green one.

This link is an examination of a uniform used onscreen with side-by-side comparisons of several different swatches of fabric from TNG under different lighting ,and it it surprising.

I love this quote from the site:
"So really ... who knows?"

For me, I've seen them, and I know what I saw, the colors looked identical between TOS command tunics and the 1st two seasons Operations costumes of TNG at the Seattle SF expo. With my HD TV when looking at the series again both TOS and TNG the colors look correct - GREEN and not Gold. Some shots appear yellow and at times mustard but not Gold, I'm getting the feeling many non-believers don't know what Gold looks like.

Yellow, then, is what I usually see.

And, as for what gold looks like, I usually medaled in bronze so...

;)

I'm glad to hear that someone else thinks those two look the same. I am guessing that the overall green look is intentional, but oddly, the website I mentioned suggest the early kilt-style (going with that as a better name) uniform that was examined was orange, though I suppose there could also have been green ones.

Unfortunately, I don't think we can really tell much from the current colors of any of these ancient costumes. They were all made with different types (and lots) of fabric and dye and have seen different levels of laundering and exposure to the elements (light, temperature, etc.) over the years, so none of them are the same color as they were originally. That orange skant may have been green thirty years ago, or maybe everything was a similar shade of gold that aged differently.

Good point. The article does talk about some different fabrics so it could be.
