The Missing by Una McCormack (Future book- probable spoilers)

Re: The Missing by Una McCormack

Well, the place is a commerce, exploration and defence hub in Bajor Sector these days...and I kept expecting to see much more in the way of on-camera ship traffic back when the TV series was running.

Well yes. I was wondering if there was a very specific, story related reason. A big conference or something maybe. But yeah, you're right. Especially considering the last three pages of Revelations and Dust, and the second to last chapter of Peaceable Kingdoms, it's easy to forget that DS9 is a huge hub for travel DS9 is again.

Re: The Missing by Una McCormack

One thing I'd like to see, just for my own amusement, in future installments of DS9 novels: a listing of "who's docked at the port right now". How often the listing gets updated within each novel - if at all - and where such appears within the novel can be left to the individual novel-writers. Name, ship's captain/master, registry and port of origin, that sort of thing...?

Re: The Missing by Una McCormack (Future book - probable spoilers)

^ It will, she is the CMO on DS9 while Bashir is out still and until Starfleet finds a suitable replacement or he is able to come back somehow. Personally excited, I like when Beverly gets to shine in the books.

Is there any point of the spoiler rules in here?

I guess spoilers are likely in a discussion of a future book so I have edited the title of this thread.

But could everyone be more careful please. If you're discussing a plot point from books less than six months old, use spoiler tags.

Ooh, very interesting/ominous cover.

But I'm sure they are just coming over for a sweet DS9 party.

"Ominous", I'm not sure of yet.

"Interesting" as in "oh, cool, where's my copy of Starship Spotter?" on the other gripping appendage...that's definitely on!

On a random note, one Christmas a few years back I wrote a silly Trek story for my sister that involved all the series' crews (and other characters) meeting on Deep Space Nine for a Christmas party. It turned into a murder mystery when Santa Claus (AKA Future Guy; Silik was taking orders from Santa) was assassinated on Christmas Eve (replace Santa Claus with Nanietta Bacco, and I insist that the writers of The Fall stole my ideas! :p)

With S&S needing to keep an eye out on budgets, and not being able to pay CGI-modelers to take time and design and model new ships all the time, it makes sense to re-use older material, just like in the shows.
I'm not so sure. There are so many wonderful aspiring CG artists out there who would love to have a Trek cover in their portfolio, I don't think recycling whatever ENT models Doug had at hand was necessary.

They still need to be payed. See, we like to think that aspiring artists will do things for free to get their names out. I know one or two aspiring artists, and like they said, if you always keep doing things for free or dirt-cheap, that's what people are going to expect from you. The moment you start charging for your work, people stop coming to you. It's still a job, and you have bills to pay and mouths to feed.

Second off, copyrights. If people not working under a contrect are making these covers, you can get into all sort of legal issues over who has ownership over the models used, the image made, stuff like that.

So ultimatly, only artists working for CBS/S&S will get to make these covers.

Well, in the sense that S&S pays them for their cover art, yes, but the cover artists, like the authors, are freelancers. Pocket can hire whoever they want to do the covers -- for instance, the covers to the upcoming Seekers are being done by the artist whose fan-art mockup covers inspired the series in the first place. So, yes, fan artists can be hired to do professional book covers.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the ending of Revelations and Dust and Kira. Looks awesome!
Maybe they're all ships that somehow got lost inside the wormhole over time and for some reason they've all reemerged at the same time.
Probably not, although both the original title (Home Again) and the new one (The Missing) seem like they could fit such an event.

^That makes sense. Great idea. May want to spoiler code that as a potential story idea though..

Re: The Missing by Una McCormack

Did I hear David R. George III is writing a DS9 novel after One Constant Star?

My God I certainly hope not. Let someone with fresh eyes and ideas. His The Fall is considered the worsts of the 5. I'm looking forward to David Mack's novel about section 31. Let him write for DS9.

He's actually wrote two scripts for the show itself.

From Memory Alpha:

He and John J. Ordover cowrote the 1995 Deep Space Nine episode "Starship Down" and the story treatment for the 1999 episode "It's Only a Paper Moon". They also collaborated on the comic book mini-series Star Trek: Divided We Fall from WildStorm Comics.

Mack also wrote the dialog for the Deep Space Nine video games The Fallen and Dominion Wars, and the character bios for Star Trek: Starship Creator.

Not to mention the series that changed everything, Destiny.

If Crusher will significantly clash with one of Deep Space Nine's crew, who do you suppose it will be?

Well, technically not crew, I see her clashing with Quark. A far as the crew since Crusher was there when Ro betrayed the Enterprise-D crew, so there may be something there.
