The Missing by Una McCormack (Future book- probable spoilers)

Re: The Missing by Una McCormack

The Missing will have to be a pretty long book in order to adequately cover the DS9/Defiant and Robinson crews effectively if it does both.

I'm a bit displeased that the 5-book The Fall couldn't do 1 book each for the Enterprise, Defiant, Titan, Aventine, and Robinson. It seemed to be an extremely fitting idea to me.

Re: The Missing by Una McCormack

^ I personally would have liked to see Sisko been made an Admiral with DS9 as his base of operations

Re: The Missing by Una McCormack

^ But that wouldn't follow on from his characterisation in any of the preceding three novels he was in ... Nor indeed, his characterisation in the relaunch before then. Although of course DRG's handling of him differs to an extent from the earlier relaunch novels, meaning that an 'admiral sisko' storyline could have occured. But not after Rough Beasts, Plagues and Raise the Dawn - Ben (& Kas) caught the exploration bug :D

Re: The Missing by Una McCormack

Personally, I would have preferred Sisko being forced into a promotion over Riker.

Re: The Missing by Una McCormack

:cardie: Maybe someone should tell Drexler that April 1st isn't until Tuesday.

Re: The Missing by Una McCormack

upon seeing it initially, i did think it a mess. but meh, it's a lot of pretty ships and one kind-of-pretty station and one pretty possible-wormhole...

Re: The Missing by Una McCormack

:techman:Wow! that's a wonderful picture of ds9 and different alien ships.

Re: The Missing by Una McCormack

Yeah. This cover is the sort of visual feast I expect to see whenever I visit DS9!

B-)

Re: The Missing by Una McCormack

That's quite a collection of ships, from a big variety of races. Very interesting.

All 22nd Century designs. Hmmm.

Wormhole Aliens, you have some explaining to do.

It might not mean anything (just using whatever CGI ship designs are at hand), but still, pretty. (I see Tandaran patrol ships, a Vissian starship, Guys-Who-Use-Flamethrowers-Against-Loque'eque ships, a Takret pirate ship, Xantoras patrol vessels, an Orion marauder, Rigelian scout ships, a Human freighter, a Vulcan shuttle, a Retellian/Tellarite freighter...)

^ Thanks for posting that; I didn't recognize any of those ship designs.

Re: The Missing by Una McCormack

I think Doug was indeed using what was to hand - he mentions that in the comments to the picture that older ships TOS-film era ships were used throughout the TNG era, implying his justification.

Marcus LaCroix: Looks like some ships from the Enterprise era.
[...]
Doug Drexler: There are, Marcus. I think we can expect ships to last a few hundred years in the future. Even today, the Air Force is flying aircraft that are 60 years old, and TNG featured starfleet ships that were from the K&S movie era.
[...]
Michael French: Doug, I think they reused some ships like The Excelsior Class to keep from having to spend the money on a new one. Don't get me a wrong, it's a great looking ship. I think of The Bird of Prey's...
[...]
Doug Drexler: Michael! You are correct, sir!

Re: The Missing by Una McCormack

With S&S needing to keep an eye out on budgets, and not being able to pay CGI-modelers to take time and design and model new ships all the time, it makes sense to re-use older material, just like in the shows.

What I wonder though, why the hell so many ships are gathering at DS9....

Re: The Missing by Una McCormack

Well, the place is a commerce, exploration and defence hub in Bajor Sector these days...and I kept expecting to see much more in the way of on-camera ship traffic back when the TV series was running.
