Those who are inclined to disbelieve in the Mirror Universe due to the extreme improbability of the same people occupying the same positions are looking through the wrong end of the telescope. It is only the existence of such a universe with the same people in the same positions that made the crossover possible

Yeah, and that starts you down the slippery slope of questioning more story premises that Trek uses, like faster-than-light travel or time travel. A parallel universe where people are evil isn't that much more of stretch than either of those.
If there are an infinite number of realities with an infinite number of differences, then the mirror universe is no more or less probable than any other reality.
In some universes, Kirk is a woman. In some universes, Vulcans have purple hair. And in some universes, the exact same people end up serving on the same ship even though they are all cutthroat pirates instead of explorers, and society and culture are vastly different. The mirror universe just happens to be the one that Kirk and Co. stumbled upon in the mishap with the transporter and the ion storm.

There was once a Trek comic featuring multiple-universe crossovers. In one scene, Kirk from "our" universe sees a female version of Kirk. They just look at each other with odd expressions as if they find each other somehow repulsive.

The thread title is "The Mirror Universe Does not exist". That would appear to be right up the alley of someone who hated the concept of the MU. Why wouldn't they look in?
I just finished reading David Mack's book " Section 31 Disavowed" about the Breen attempting to steal a jaunt ship from the Mirror Universe! Not only does it exist, but so does Section 31 of the Federation that answers to no one. Dr. Julian Bashir is enlisted to go with S31 to stop the Breen, but is captured and charged with murdering a Founder of the Dominion in a previous visit. So, he's been there twice.
The book is awesome and explains a lot. I'm following Mack's novels because of Bashir and love interest Sarina Douglas.
If you choose to buy the book above, please purchase "Typhon Pact: Zero Sum Game" first. They are interconnected at a certain point.
A Vulcan also talks about the multiverse which I found a bit disturbing. But the tech is incredible for 24th Century. The Vulcans can look into many universes for Intel.
The Breen are in both books and they really explain the multi-species race that hides behind masks with vocoders and uniforms. No single cultural identity.
I used to like Romulan technology, but the Breen seem even more capable; hence the Romulan saying, "Never turn your back on a Breen!"
Section 31 tech is off the hook too! Way beyond Star Fleet Intelligence.

Am disappointed, however, that "Section 31 Control" won't be our until next year, late.
I enjoy reading about both the Breen and Dr. Bashir & Sarina Douglas.
