Even if it was from the same timeline, there's always the possibility that the interphase effect caused the ship to diverge into multiple quantum states. But I think I prefer the "slightly different timeline" origin because of the insignia error.

I'd like it if Pocket Books somehow published a reference book about the origins of the Terran Empire with input from novel authors so that the book would be a useful "story bible" for future MU stories. But to make it a sufficiently detailed reference book-sized publication, the timeline divergence from the prime universe would probably have to be fairly close to modern day.

What makes you think there was ever a timeline divergence? The MU could simply have always been a parallel reality rather than a timeline that branched off.
