The Middleman

Harland and Wolff is the company that built the Titanic.
Okay, I figured that was significant but didn't know the significance of those names. Isn't there an item on the blog listing what all of these ID's they've used in the series to date and their significance?

Edward J. Smith was Captain of the Titanic.
Now that one I did pick up on. I think there was also a reference to Southhampton, when Ida was listing instances of where tubas had been used, stolen, etc

Wow, I can't believe I missed this thread. So far I've really liked the show, it's just goofy fun. I love all of the hidden references, well at least the ones I've been able to catch. I'm glad you guys pointed out the Titanic references, because afraid there wasn't anything like that in this episode.

The Ectoplasmic Panhellenic Investigation - Okay.... I've heard three Ghostbusters references so far:
- Gatekeeper/Keymaster,
- inspectors Zeddimore and Stanz,
- Ray Parker Jr. Ave

Now a couple more:
- Egon Spengler Award
- Evo Shandor Medal

That one was easy to see coming, when Wendy went into accent mode.

I swear there was a Star Trek II semi-reference in there: "No real names on an open frequency" or words to that effect.

Sometimes I wish the show would spend less time on the relationship angst/ordinary life stuff and more on the wacky cases of the week, but I guess, budgetarily speaking, that's not in the cards. I mean, sure, I liked Alias better when it balanced the spy stuff with everyday-life stuff, but that was a serious drama; this is a show I want to be goofy and colorful and wild, and although the relationship stuff is written with wit, it's just not as much fun as the sci-fi adventure stuff. It's like tuning into the '60s Batman and having Bruce Wayne spend half the episode talking about his feelings for Catwoman.

What I do like, though, is the evolving relationship between MM and WW. He started out as a fairly aloof, Joe Friday-esque figure, but he's become quite likeable. And the emotional subplot last week was good both because it revolved around the core relationships and because it was written by Hans Beimler; although it was good drama, and I want this show to be comedy.

I liked the college student "interpreter" doing everyone's voices. He did a pretty good MM.

Was Omega Theta Nu a Ghostbusters or horror-film reference? I can't find any Google reference to that effect, but could it be the initials? OTN or O. Th. N? (The one Ghostbusters-related fraternity I'm aware of was in an episode of the animated series; it was called Tri Cuppa Joe.)

No way. "On an open frequency" is a common phrase. It's not specific to that movie any more than, say, playing bagpipes at a funeral.

Funny you should mention this aspect, because my family came up with a similar observation last night. We much prefer the humorous goofy nature and whip-smart repartee. These last two episodes ended with decidedly different atmospheres from what we'd seen as the norm.

Middleman is being fleshed out nicely, and it's done fortunately without sacrificing the overall charm he's been given so far. It hasn't addled his nature, but neither has it limited his dimension. The more that happens, the more Wendy's character seems to unfold. Granted, much of that happens without MM in the scene... but his development gives her character the platform to do likewise.

Yeah, he did do that well. I liked his exchanges with the disembodied MM better than when he was in the dress and talking to the sorority sisters. Both were amusing, but the latter didn't have to rely on the sight gag.

We didn't spend much time on that, but neither did we come up with anything on it.

The Mos Eisely aside cracked us up, and I think there were a few other non-Ghostbusters references as well, weren't there?

Just watched it...two more references that I don't know where caught yet:

Louis, the frat guy, is also the name of the Rick Moranis character from Ghostbusters.

He later had on a sweatshirt that just said College on it...which of course, comes from Animal House, produced by Reitman.

It's just a great romp of a show.

Shhoot.... we wondered if Louis' shirt had a connection of some type.

Nice catch!!

Yeah like I said earlier Perry White's "Great Caesar's Ghost!".:techman:

Ah, I recognized the shirt instanlty, I just wasn't sure how it was conected to Ghostbusters. Where was the Mos Eisley reference?

Thought I forget the precise scene, Wendy utters "you will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy."

I think one of them said Han's line from Star Wars: "Uh, everything's under control. Situation normal."

Oh yeah, she said that about the sorority house. I figured it was a quote from something, but I didn't recall what.

By the way, is that "zombie palate cleanser" a real movie? I would normally assume not, but this show tends to drop genuine pop-culture references all over the place -- such as that Randolph Scott Western from last week.

Not sure about "zombie palate cleanser", but that just means I'll have to go back and watch it again! After all, who knows what little pearls of wisdom we've missed!

Dang. I thought I had something there. :) I realize "on an open frequency" is a common phrase but maybe it was just his delivery of the line. I'm still waiting for the inevitable Trek-themed episode.
