The Mego Renaissance

Supervisor 194

When I was a kid, Mego action figures were ubiquitous (and much cooler than the Barbie-sized G.I Joes). I loved the fact that they had so many licenses, and could mix and match universes (franchises). In that vein, I'm really enjoying the resurgence of the Mego type figures by such companies as Mattel and Castaway Toys:

Any other Mego fans out there?

Never had Baron Karza or Force Commander. I had a half-dozen Time Travelers, a couple of Pharoids, Acroyear, Space Glider, Warp Racer, Photon Sled, Thorium Orbiter, Battle Cruiser, Hornetroid. Maybe a couple of others. There was a modular space station of some sort, I forget the name.

My brother and I tended to mix them in with our Star Wars and Adventure People figures and have all sorts of wild adventures.

Not sure if it was Mego...but when I was six or so I desperately wanted a Spider-Man figure with his mask off. It was a cloth mask and you could put it back on. It was in the display window of the the comic shop for months and months until someone bought it and I was crushed.

I never knew they had done that...that is cool. I always wanted the "removable cowl" Batman, which is why I was so ecstatic to get the "re-created" Batman shown in Supervisor194's post above.

I loved these in the 70s, and I have to admit I get a little kick when I see them hanging on the pegs. I think I still have Kirk and Spock (... somewhere.)

I also got a big jolt when I read that Hasbro intends to bring back The Micronauts. Though I doubt they'll bear much resemblance to the Microman of the 70s (if they ever do come out).

When I was a kid in the early 70's I had all the Star Trek, Superhero, and Planet of the Ape Mego figures. I wish I still had them. :(

I think my favorite thing about Megos growing up, was that you could mix and match characters from different universes---many an afternoon had Capt. Kirk, Superman, and Mr. Fantastic fighting Sentinels (large size Shogun Warriors). I know its nostalgia, but I'm so glad to see this kind of action figure coming back.

It's too bad the new Batman figure's gloves are not removable like the originals.

Oh, and I still have mine. They're thirty five years old now.

I still have all of my old ones, too.

I agree removable gloves would have been better, but I'm very impressed with how they designed the mask--it fits so much better than the original.

Anyone remember the tie-in figures they released for "The Black Hole"? I had a figure of the S.T.A.R. sentry robot. I don't know if it was Mego or not, but the articulation was identical to the Micronauts.

Yeah, that was him! Okay, I take it back -- unlike the Micronauts, his feet didn't articulate.

Most of my Micronauts were birthday or Christmas presents, but I got the sentry figure at a souvenir stand in Disneyland. Most people get stuffed Mickeys or some such. No, sir!
