The Measure Of A Man - Quote Inquiry

USS Excelsior

Commodore

In the episode where there's a hearing as to whether Data has self determination to choose his fate there was one line that I didn't quite get.

Data states that Geordi's visor provides him with far superior sight and asks why they don't do that to all starfleet officers eyes. And Picard told him "I think you know the answer to that"

Well what exactly is the answer to that....

I don't remember Picard ever saying that. I do remember though his stunned look, knowing that Data was right and then saying "dismissed."

I just watched it. data asks if Geordi's eyes are better than human eyes, why doesnt everyone have their eyes removed and replaced with visors? Picard does not answer. Data says: "It is precisely because i am not human."
Picard: "That will be all, Mr. Data."

then he starts researching.

data's comment just amplified how he is mistreated because he is not human.

What I always wondered about the show is tha tone thing that makes us human is our ability to feel both physical and emotional pain. But Data cannot.
What do you think?

Because people don't just get their body upgraded because their are superior technological parts available. Geordi got it done because he was blind, but the plainsighted do not trade in their eyes for visors. A latent final strand of technophobia, an unwillingness to change what isn't broke, whatever you want to call it, that's what it is.

I must have remembered the dialogue wrong.

Although realistically they could have issued "VISOR" vision goggles for starfleet officers to use which wouldn't require implants into their brain to use them.

I guess the answer to his question is that Starfleet officers wouldn't want such an invasive procedure just for the sake of having enhanced visual capabilities.

I guess to take it further one could argue why not all Starfleet officers be androids.
