I've noticed that a lot of DVD and Blu-Ray releases seem to backing off on special features.

If more and more people are opting to stream films online instead of buy disks, there's less demand for including special features with the disks. Why even go to the trouble of making special documentaries, if they don't draw in customers?

I guess this is true, but even with streaming media alternative audio tracks are possible so it should still be possible to get at least a director's commentary. I'd also think that things like deleted scenes and such would be a pretty given. I can "get" not having in-depth BTS featurettes but to not have them but *do* have a gag-reel and BTS photo stills? Just seems odd, especially with a movie as big an ambitious as this one was, not to mention critically well received. The physical media copy not having much in the way of special features just seems lame.

It's funny, I usually try and purchase the special featureiest version possible, but only ever get around to watching the special features for maybe 10-15% of the discs I buy.

The suspicion is those are being held back for a later, more feature-packed release.

At one point Scott said the BluRay would feature 20 additional minutes of footage, so I concur this is why there weren't deleted scenes on the current release.

My guess is this is probably mostly footage of the drive to the Ares IV MAV. I can see why it might have been cut, of the two major incidents during the trip the sandstorm might have been decided to be problematic, as you'd have general audiences wondering why this huge storm didn't blow over the other MAV, so it's almost better to cut it. I'm guessing to avoid similarly confusing the audience is the reason why the Ares III decent vehicle wasn't ever mentioned, either.

I'm a sucker for commentaries. I'd have enjoyed a Scott commentary on this one - he's done quite a few for his past works already.

Has anybody played the mobile game? It's not bad. It's not free, at around $2.99, I think, but I've been having fun with it. It's interactive fiction, in that you play the role of mission control guiding Mark along once they initially make contact with him, and the game boils down to you making the right decisions to move the story along.

Nothing in a box--some resin garage kits, 3D prints.

So help me--if I ever become the next Bill Gates, I'm going to invest in producing spacecraft kits at cost--at a loss--and buy out all the toy car and car models--fill a train car with those molds--and shove that off a track into a river.

Now I'd release NASCAR kits in resin--with no instructions except a bad VHS tape with Tim & Eric.

The Martian is just a great, great movie. We really need a lot more movies like this and someday I still want my multiple-movie Mars expedition adventure. I mean this will be the greatest and most challenging undertaking man will ever go on. It's something that really could be made into something else as every aspect of it is fraught with risks, challenges and is a months long ordeal. Even this movie made this trip to Mars seem routine and mundane for NASA and the astronauts.
