The maquis

TNG: Double Helix: Quarantine is a pretty good Maquis book IMHO. It follows Chakotay's crew and Tom Riker. You don't need to read the other Double Helix books to get what's going on as most of the background can be gleaned from context. All the character arcs are wrapped up by the end of Quarantine. There are a few plot threads that carry over into Double or Nothing but nothing major.

A few of the Malibu comics also have Maquis plot lines. Maquis: Soldier of Peace was a three part story that wasn't bad. There were 1 or 2 others in there that feature that group.

There was also "The Badlands" duology by Susan Wright. It contained 4-novellas, each based on TOS, TNG, Ds9 and Voyager. Voyager's acts as a direct prequel to "Caretaker".

Voyager's "Pathways" also contains a lot of Maquis stories as, just like "Mosaic" was Janeway's backstory, "Pathways" contains individual chapters detailing everyone, except for Seven's, backstory (including Kes). So Chakotay, Paris, Torres and Tivok's stories all contain Maquis stories.

Marvel's DS9 comic series had two different Maquis stories, one in issues #3 & #4, and another one featuring members of the same group in issues #8 & #9.
