I personally like Freeland. Although I don’t know how electable she is, because people who don’t like Trudeau are probably going to closely associate her with him.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking as well. Plus, having recently resigned from Trudeau's cabinet, she may not want the job. And as you point out, she could be seen as Trudeau 2.0 in the eyes of people who haven't liked Trudeau. But she is very well spoken, and I think she's shown that she can clearly hold her own. It remains to be seen what she does in light of his resignation. I'd have to think she was preparing for the possibility of his resignation.

I just don't know enough of the current crop of Liberals to be able to make an opinion about who should be their new face, as nobody comes to mind.

Just had a thought that the proroguing might have been done to prevent something foolish to be done by Polievre and others when Trump takes office, should he decide to try something. This would act as a buffer to give the Parliament enough time to prepare itself to rebuff anything Polievre tries to put forward.

Toronto star reported last week that she had been canvassing for support.
Yeah, especially after Singh put his support behind the Conservatives.

if the liberals manage to save the furniture and get official opposition status singh is history.

If the ndp is in the official opposition and the tories have a big majority he’s irrelevant and the pharmacare and dental care programs are toast.

If the ndp lose seats he won’t survive the leadership review.

The ndp have dumped better leases than he ever was.

Ahh, well there you go.

As for Singh, he's been at it for a long time, so maybe a new face for the NDP is needed.

I’m not on board with either Carney or Joly.

I also like Anand, although we haven’t heard much from her lately. I could go either way on LeBlanc. I don’t feel I know enough about Champagne to make an informed opinion.

So Anand announced today that she's not going to be running for the leadership, and she's not even going to run for re-election. This is a huge loss to the party. I think she would have made a great leader.

Joly and LeBlanc have also both confirmed that they won't be running for the leadership. From what I've read, some members of caucus are trying to get LeBlanc to reconsider, but he seems pretty adamant right now. Champagne is reportedly considering it, but he hasn't declared at this point.

The only two declared candidates so far are Chandra Arya and Frank Baylis, neither of whom probably have a chance. (Unless no one else enters, I guess.)

Carney and Freeland are both apparently getting things ready for their runs. As I mentioned earlier, I'm really not on board with the idea of Carney becoming leader. I know people are probably counting on his name recognition from his time with the Bank of Canada. But he has never held elected office before, and really, in our current environment, who is going to vote for someone whose post-BoC and BoE work has been as vice-chair or chairman of the board for major financial companies? Talk about out of touch with the problems of regular Canadians.

My personal favourite is still Freeland, again acknowledging that she would probably have a huge hurdle trying to distance herself from Trudeau.

Cristy Clark is apparently also considering running. She wouldn't be my choice for the same reason I'm not really a fan of Bonnie Crombie: she's more right on the political spectrum than I would prefer. Of course, I guess that could be helpful trying to attract voters in the general election who thought Trudeau was too far to the left, but may be uncomfortable supporting Poilievre, and are currently only doing so because he's the only viable option on the right.

There are a couple other people who haven't been mentioned yet who are also considering a leadership run. One of those is Karina Gould. I don't really know a lot about her, but some people whose opinions I respect are really hoping she will run, so I might have to do some research.

The $350,000 entry fee is probably a huge barrier to some, but I'm guessing they did that to narrow the field from the start, since they have such a compressed timeframe to work with.

arya has probably already killed his chances with his comments that french doesn't matter.

It's also nicely little fundraiser for the party.

so champagne and clarke are out of the race to replace to trudeau (well not that they ever official entered).

Don't think the former was ever interested and the later was probably mortally wounded by the issue of whether she'd been a member of the conservative party.

Think it's coming to down to Carney or Freelan - everyone else is pretty much a non-event.

Was also reading an op-ed piece from the star that speculates that poilievre is gonna being for a shock when he becomes P.M because he won't be buddy-buddy with trump like he expects

the article also mentions that in his two hour mutual admiration session with jordan petersen at no point did he address the threats of tariff's from trump instead trotted out the same old talking point (furthering my theory he's a policy vacuum and relying on the liberals unpopularity than any vision or policy).,

In fact he's be rather quiet on the issue, which jagmeet singh claims is cos he's scared of the response from musk.

lol There was a soundbite I saw where Trump said he disliked Polievre, so yeah it's as clear as day. As for a nickname, in the 22 Minutes video I posted, the Trump skit has him nicknaming him Pierre Pollypockets.

Funny how quickly things are moving. I read an article during my lunch that said that Clark had dropped out of the race, but that same article said that Champagne was expected to launch his campaign later today.

He's awesome

I don't think I would use "Doug Ford" and "awesome" in the same sentence, but I do have to admit he's doing fairly well in the "defender of Canada" role.

I really want one of those hats.
:adore:

It seems you're not the only one... apparently they're having issues keeping them in stock.

Sorry about that, I just assumed he's the only politician with a spine in your country
ford is the current chair of the premier’s group and from the largest province (population and economy wise) so he gets the attention.

But other than smith all the premiers and p.m are largely behind a tariff response to trump though some feel the energy sector threats should be plan b.

One premier compared the to the queen on a cheese board. You make your opponent aware she’s there but don’t expose her right away.

I told you guys about the time I saw Second City in Toronto, didn't I? It was about six years ago.

Not only was it hilarious, but one of the cast members was Claire McConnell - the actress who played Dennas, a Klingon from Discovery! If they had got me up on stage - like they sometimes do with the audience - I should have said "Qapla'!"

She's very pretty IRL, but God help me, Dennas is the UGLIEST Klingon I have ever seen. She looked like she had a grandfather clock lodged in her forehead. :wtf: I mean, I realize DSC was just trying to do something different with the Klingon makeup, but DAMN.

@Marc: A cheese board? ;)

Speaking of Murdoch Mysteries...somebody here told me once that one of your other shows did an ep which featured WIlliam Murdoch's present-day descendant but I totally forgot what they told me. :alienblush: Which show was it?

Not that there's a chance in hell I can actually WATCH it - kinda like I can't watch Law & Order: Toronto :brickwall: - I'm just curious.

Republic of Doyle.

Alan Hawco appeared as Jake Doyle's ancestor in this Murdoch episode.

I only saw the Murdoch episode.

Yes, he is.
