RIP Queen Elizabeth II

She was very well-respected, and it's certainly sad when anyone that beloved passes away. She did seem to be very generous and caring, and the world will be a little dimmer without her presence.

That said, I do think we should use this opportunity to begin the process of divesting ourselves of the archaic system of monarchy (a *foreign* monarchy, no less). But I also realize that we won't.

NGL, not looking forward to seeing Charles's face replace Queen Elizabeth on our money. But I guess I very seldom have actual physical cash anyway, so it's not like it's going to be a common occurrence for me.

Actually, it's not a given that he'll be on the money, or at least not on the $20. Coins, yeah. But they've been moving toward replacing the old traditional bills anyway.

and remember when they would go on about career politicians leading over parties? Here's another chump that's never had job in the real world.

not so long ago, the polling agregator a 338canda.com had the tories in front but things have changed and if they election were to be held to day, there's a 63% chance that boy blunder would get a 4th term (almost unheard of in Canadian poltiics).

Given that polievre's support is largely in the tory base and I suspect mainly in the western provinces (and is generally unliked in the rest of the country) this might have factored in the polling numbers.

Time will tell which way things go.

I didn't make note of each of them, but there was certainly more than one. I saw it come up a number of different times reading through stories in the news app.

Some at least had the good grace to put it in quotation marks.

Yes, he did... but he didn't initially clarify that it only included federal civil servants, and not federally-regulated industries, like banks and airlines. The Minister of Labour had to clarify in a subsequent tweet.

I may have screwed up this week.

My house burned down a couple years ago. The money has been sitting in a savings account for a year. I maxed out my rsp each year with it but hadn't done anything in my TFSA as I wanted to, well, buy a new house. Now that we're at the end of Sep that doesn't seem likely until next spring, so I went to he CRA website, got my TFSA limit, and maxed it.

But I'd forgotten I had a little TFSA mutual fund at a different bank (I'd set it up when they did a matching promo thing a few years ago) that pulls $25/month automatically.

So I probably over contributed a tiny bit. I immediately pulled more than I could have over contributed when I realized (transaction the next next) but the damage may have been done. I guess I will find out in the spring.

You may be ok. (I'm an accountant although not a tax specialist, but I read.) You'll get a notice next year but since it's such a small amount (about $225 if I'm understanding you) they will be open to an explanation. Yes, they notice small amounts but you can appeal. I'll have to check but as I recall you appeal within 6 months of when you get the notice. For a small amount like that along with the same simple explanation you wrote here you will be fine.

The penalty is 1% of the overcontribution per month it sits there so that means you'll owe a whopping $9.00. I DO suggest you appeal, you'll be able to do it online. It's basically a formality that will take you 2 minutes but you want a clean slate.

A general reminder: the contribution room you have isn't fully updated until March. Most people run into problems when they do contributions in January and think they have more room than they actually do. This happens because financial institutions generally send the final info to the CRA the same time they send T5/T3.

Even my NDP-supporting housekeeping helper got in a huff about it, outraged that he'd sung a song while on official business and representing the country.

My take on it: As long as he wasn't at an official function and it wasn't on the day of the funeral itself, I don't see a problem. My housekeeper wondered if he could even sing (she doubted it), but my take on that: Justin sings better than Stephen Harper does. And then I had to explain about the "Van Cats/Vingt-Quatres" "band" Harper had, and the standup "comedy" impressions he did. Yes, Harper can do spot-on impressions of John Diefenbaker and Joe Clark. No, he can't sing worth a damn. Was his son embarrassed when Harper insisted on performing at some CPC event? Yep, and could be heard telling him to stop.

Trudeau singing with a group of people, taking a bit of time to relax, is not a problem as far as I'm concerned. You can't tell me that nobody in that entire country cracked a smile or a joke during the entire week leading up to the funeral. Why else would that Paddington Bear video have been everywhere? I know I giggled throughout that and some of the other humorous stuff people mentioned about the Queen.

That said, I did watch the funeral (in real time, not a replay), and cried through parts of it. Now life goes on. Though I have been musing about the Rainbow Bridge poem (the one that many people have found comfort in when they lose a beloved pet): If there's any truth to that, Her Majesty would have been greeted by dozens of corgis and horses when she arrived on the other side.

I didn't catch all of it, but I did watch a rather large percentage of the day. And by "watched", I mean "listened to it in the background while focusing on my work", because not being a federal civil servant, I did not get a day off to mark the occasion.
