The Maple Leaf Lounge

Yeah, true. There's that. It's not quite something that those shippers will be able to replicate. However, perhaps these smaller bus lines will be able to have a similar service.

The photo in that article is from our bus terminal, and we're in the area that's not losing service!

I had raised the question about a nationalized bus service earlier in this thread. I have no problem with federal tax dollars going to subsidize bus service in this country, and I say that as someone who is fortunate enough to live in one of the most well-serviced transportation corridors in the nation.

Canada is so geographically dispersed, that if it's not financially feasible for private companies to operate here, the government should step in to ensure the majority of Canadians have some way to travel between communities. I know not everyone will agree with another federal spending program, but we're seeing now what the alternative brings us.

Yeah, that's why I'm hoping that the void created by Greyhound pulling out is noticed as a problem needing to be fixed. And I think it's a situation that's only bound to get worse, as I could easily see Greyhound pulling service in the eastern provinces before long. And yes, I do think it's absolutely necessary. I think those who dismiss the importance of bus service are probably flying anyway and not in a position to be affected. The fact that Canada's as big as it is only highlights the issue of how crucial this form of transportation is and a fact that large swaths of Canada will be affected either directly or indirectly.

Such a tragedy. I believe it was 13 injured, and two fatalities (not counting the gunman): a 10 year old girl, and an 18 year old woman.

It breaks my heart. My thoughts are with all the victims and their families.

How about Dougie Ford slashing the number of Toronto city council members almost in half?

Brilliant move. Will save over $25 million and streamline decision making.

The council is freaking out because some of them are going to have to go and get real jobs now!

Even if the merits were valid, there is no way that he should be making the change at this point in the election cycle. If it's a good idea, then implement it for 2022. Doing it this way just comes across as vindictive and spiteful.

And from what I've read, the savings won't be quite as good as they're claiming anyway, because the remaining councilors will need to hire more staff to handle the increased number of constituents.

(Full disclosure: I don't live in the GTA.)

For something that has that much impact, he should have mentioned it during the campaign. He didn't, so as far as I'm concerned he has no business imposing something like this unilaterally.

He seems to be making a habit out of pulling things out of thin air that were never discussed or debated during the campaign. That's not the way our political system is supposed to work.

think anyone who's paid attention to the fords over years and who don't worship the ground they walk on shouldn't be surprised the dougie is pulling shit like this.

I wonder how many who are happy with ford taking the axe the Toronto City Council where most outraged when wynne announced her plans to sell off part of Hydro One because it wasn't mentioned during the election campaign.

Well the ford government is showing it's true colours.

The speaker of the house didn't hear it, the leader of govt business in the house didn't hear it, wasn't heard in the public gallery nor on video but the govt is going to use it as excuse not to answer questions (funny how the tories seem to hate answering questions but not surprising given ford has staffers and advisers who used to work for harper who was well known for ducking questions and being a vindictive prick).

and a kick in the teeth the provinces most disadvantages. a government lead by a multimillionaire calls it's compassionate to grant a 1.5 increase instead that's barely keeping up with inflation you bunch of kerrs.

Oh and they say the province can't afford it - yet some how it can afford more fucking subways for toronto an tax cuts for the big end of town.

Not a very objective take at all

It's entirely possible. Or do you only believe it when the Liberals or NDP make allegations like that?

Well, not sure how much of this is on anyone's radar, but there have been quite a few forest fires burning right now in Northeastern Ontario. Parry Sound 33 was said to be nearing the Trans-Canada yesterday and I'm currently smelling the smoke from that fire. It keeps growing and they don't yet have it under control. It's currently 10,139 hectares. More and more people everyday are being evacuated. At least 3 other nearby fires are also burning. There is one near North Bay also not under control, currently at 22,287 hectares.

Also this interactive fire map is pretty cool:

There has been some coverage in the southern part of the province but I think the news has been paying more attention to the fires in California.

The wife has been a bit worried - she has a friend in the area.

Her cousin was complaining about the not being able to have a campfire due to burn bans. Should have set him up north to see if he'd get a clue or two.

Heh, yeah, it does suck, but unfortunately it's a way of life and becoming more and more common up here. There's been a ban ever since summer started.

Last year, on my way back from my Eclipse trip, ended up camping in a KOA in Montana where fires were very prevalent at the time. Fire bans were in effect, complete with a big red sign stating so at the entrance. So, what do I see a family but light up a campfire in front of their RV. When park staff got wind of this they freaked out. I can only hope they got kicked out and banned.

Really? I've seen lots on the northern Ontario ones, but I think I've actually only seen one about California... there was a very recent article about the fires nearing San Francisco, and that was really the first time I had read that anything was going on there.

At any rate, @Owain Taggart , I forget specifically where you live, but I hope you are staying safe.

The local station here is a Global affiliate and part way through they take some stories from Global presenter (beats me why) and first up tonight was the California fires then we get to the Ontario fires.

Might be more on Global National but the 6pm has been my main bulletin for the 30 years (it co-coincided with tea time) and old habits die hard :)

Well, I'm not in any of the affected regions, thankfully. I'm just near enough to be smelling the smoke when it blows our way. But some of the affected communities are a bit close to home. The problem right now is that the region is feeling overwhelmed, even with the extra help it's getting (with some crews having come from as far as Mexico, and one firefighter from Alberta, I believe, died fighting these fires), and new fires seem to be popping up faster than older ones getting under control. I can only hope they get these under control soon.

Oh, OK. Maybe that's why, I don't actually watch the news on TV.
