The Mandarin- the primary reason why I won't be buying Iron Man on DVD

You better not read Nextwave. The creators' names are Ellis and Immonen. That alone would offend the hell out of you.

Re: The Mandarin- the primary reason why I won't be buying Iron Man on

The Mandarin I maybe able to tolerate. That white-haired character hopefully is not another sad excuse for an Asian caricature. But, please for the love of decent media creations out there, keep that sad excuse for a Godzilla rip-off "Fin Fang Fuck Foom" out of the next film. Please! :klingon:
To that I simply say: read Nextwave. Oh my God, read Nextwave.
Enlighten me:

Is there a good reason why I should?

First of all, it's amazing. Secondly, it has the greatest use of Fin Fang Foom...ever.

Re: The Mandarin- the primary reason why I won't be buying Iron Man on

I hear Mickey Rooney is interested in reading for the role...

Re: The Mandarin- the primary reason why I won't be buying Iron Man on

Not buying the Iron Man disk because the sequel might lapse into gross racist caricature doesn't quite follow, in my mind. The posts quoting Favreau's expressed concerns are promising.

My experience, though, suggests that the audience will read in racism unless there is a totally uncompromising and explicit rejection, just for added entertainment value.

On the other hand, thinking a popular film might have racist caricatures is just common sense. Throwing fits because someone might dare to discuss the same? Sounds to me like guilty conscience at work. The abusive posts
are not arguments at all. They succeed as confessions, though.

That's as much nonsense as GWR's comments.

There's nothing wrong with someone questioning racist caricatures in a film, but GWR takes it to entirely new levels. He's taking part in three ongoing threads at the moment and numerous others in the past alleging racism against Asians, and so far not a single one has panned out in my recollection. They're all ridiculous accusations that make no sense and a collection of overreactions to things that were never intended to be offensive. Even you said his comments here don't make any sense.

Meanwhile, though he gets incredibly upset at any perceived slight against Asians, he is in fact a bigot himself who doesn't hesitate to make horrible remarks against Jews and who believes Asian women who don't date Asian men are sell-outs to their race.

Maybe you haven't followed his posting history here, in GTV&M, and in Misc., but the guy is a couple cans short of a six-pack in terms of his treatment of women, other minorities, etc. People are reacting harshly because they know the type of person he is, or at least how he represents himself online.

So spare us the ridiculous accusation that if we criticize him that must be covering up our own racism or a guilty conscious. Unless you have some specific comments you'd like to produce that indicate racism on our part, I think you should lay off the baseless accusations.

Assuming something that doesn't exist yet is common sense? Wow...I don't get that at all, especially considering all interview evidence with JF seems to indicate he has the contrary intent...

Re: The Mandarin- the primary reason why I won't be buying Iron Man on

GWR .... I have to be honest and say that I am tempted to let this go on as is, because of what seems to me to be a rather overboard reaction on your part. However, there is entirely too much personal focus on the criticisms being levied. And not just at you.

So everybody ... that's enough of yanking GWR's chain, as well as each other's.

That said .... GWR, you'd do well to listen some of what others are saying.

Incubus of Board said,

So I did. I thought GWR was overreacting because Iron Man II is in the future. I also was favorable to posts citing remarks by Jon Favreau, as being factual contributions to the topic. But I also think many posts display malice unwarranted by anything in this thread. If the moderators are interested in my specific reasons for thinking so, they can find out easily enough.

In any event, GWR's posting history is not relevant here. Which is fortunate since all I remember is that GWR hates Garrett Wang. But that is the majority view at this bbs, which means people should have positive feelings about him!

Well for right now the moderators are most interested in the discussion proceeding without getting quite so personally antagonistic, which your reply seems to do quite well. However, the less specific we all get, the better.

^^ Don't say that man, I love Al Leong, to the point that I know who that is.

Same here, and then some! I can't believe he's never been cast as a Klingon, actually... But I love the little touches he puts into even the smallest characters he plays, like how he rifles through the chocolate bars to steal one in Die Hard...

He was among the first to die in the American Godzilla movie though.

Agreed. It had me in stitches. :)

You have to completely lack a soul to not laugh while reading Nextwave.
Please enlighten me in how they use "Fin Fag Mushroom" in Nextwave? :vulcan:

Not that it matters to me anyways, because a dragon caricature like that is meant for non-discerning comic book readers in our society, and not meant for Asian/Asian American eyes (who are the "target," but not the intended "target audience.").

Forget it. Editing out "Fag" isn't saving this thread for you. You've lost your last chance to continue this discussion
