The making of my Trek uniform...

Hi all,

For the Vegas Con a couple of weeks ago, I decided to make a TOS uniform. It turned into quite the project, and I finally uploaded a rather long blog post detailing the process. I posted about it briefly on another thread awhile back, but thought some of you might be interested in the more in-depth description of the project.

Blog entry here: http://www.mertonfolio.com/?p=53

Enjoy! :)

Great blog! I went through far less angst (I'm not terribly fussy about very much) and used one of the old Butterick patterns - no flaps or princess seaming here ma'am! I used a stretchy poly $1/yd fabric from Walmart - you get what you pay for - I wrestled with it all day! I am happy with my result and wore it for Hallowe'en '07 and the movie opening here and am looking forward to using it again. Kudos to you and your wonderful uniform!

...as a witness (and in minor ways co-conspirator) I can verify that every word Mrs. Focus wrote was true. And as beautiful as the dress looks in photos and on the blog, it was much prettier in person, I assure you! :)

That is a damn fine uniform right there. If I knew anything about dresmaking, I would make myself the grey science uniform (Dax, Troi), because I cannot find one to buy anywhere. :(

Much better than mine, I finally just wore a red towel to the convertion, love the boots.

I am so gay for you right now.

Seriously though, that's just awesome and looks professionally done. You should think about taking commissions; I foresee a lucrative business opportunity in your future. ;)

Personally, I'm on a hunt for someone willing to make one of those delightfully skanky Ent uniforms from In a Mirror, Darkly. No one would see me wear it aside from myself and the lovely Nathan Fillion on my wall, but that's not important.

Thanks for the nice comments guys, made my day! :)

oldstredshrtevr, if I'd been smart I would have taken your route and gone for less angst...alas, I wasn't that smart...:)

T'Girl, sometime in between the second iteration of my uniform not fitting and the final version, I was seriously considering wearing a towel.

Oryx, hey baby... ;) Thanks for the comments, I appreciate them. I'm thinking about taking commissions...just not sure if I'm ready to jump back into sewing for other people yet. But if you are seriously interested in the Mirror Enterprise uniform, email me, it could be a fun challenge. :)

You sound like Quark!

However, you are correct.

Had I your skills I'd not need the easy way! Sometimes hard things should be done because they are hard. Risk/Reward and all that. You invested skill and love and time and got a wonderful product. I invested a day and a couple $s and got a hallowe'en costume!:rommie:

I've never been too much into costumes, but I have to say, this looks to be very well done. Nice work!

This dress is amazing! I have been trying to find one like that, but ended up buying the pricey polyester mock-up from a costume shop! So infuriating... but I simply LOVE yours, did you use the Uhura pattern?
