The Magicians makes Harry Potter look like it's for Children.

Harry Potter is for Children, and anyone who says different is a communist.

(But I digress, already.)

American 1 hour tv show on the syfy network, mild swearing, no nudity, about a school for Gifted Youngsters (in their 20s) in need of learning magic. There's a beast with a swarm of moths or Locusts for a face murdering the faculty which seems to be part of an invasion from alternate dimension attached to some parody of the Narnia stories, which turns out to be an allegory for a more treacherous world like Game of Thrones.

The 10th episode came out today and there was some nerd porn that has to be celebrated.

The hero of the story who is one of those awkward ####s who always gets picked last for dodgeball has a wetdream where Slave Girl Princess Leia is making out with Daenerys Targaryen, and I swear the dialogue between these two women is "I need help fixing my hyperdrive" followed by "I'll help you fix your hyper drive if you help me find my dragons".

There's a sliver of that dream in this BTS.

Oh, graphic violence. There was this woman who's face exploded slowly. So much blood.

And despite there being a lot of recreational drugs in these story, there's a lot of metaphors for how magic is a very addictive drug that is continuously being abused by idjits pushing the envelope, or the shunned denied access. There's also mysteries, friendships and love stories.

Good times. :)

I am watching this and it was tough. Really tough to watch. And not because of the content, but because alot of the characters are so unlikable (in my eyes) at first. BRB, got to go watch ep10 now.

The lead, Quinn or whatever his name is, really annoys me to the core. Like Stephen Lee said, a lot of the other characters are downright unlikable, too.

That said, I was completely surprised by how much I enjoyed this last episode. It was almost unrecognizable, in fact. Hell, I was even able to slightly tolerate Quinn. I loved the whimsical reference to Santa, the Library, the Librarian, the Margolem, and... well, just about everything, really. Hopefully they can keep the story at this level and not revert to the mess that was earlier in the season.

I even though Guy's reference of the sex dream was just another one of his LSD-induced ramblings. But nope, it actually happened. And it was great.

Now if they would only get rid of the greyed out filters they insist on using, even on alien, magical worlds, I'd be a lot happier with the show. Seriously, what's up with that? I would understand if they used it for the mundane world to show just how colorful and alive magic was, you know like they did in the Wizard of Oz. But nope! Everything is greyed out. Blargh!

i've read the books. the books are awesome. not sure i want to shatter what i envisioned in my head by watching the tv show.

I thought Q was a bad annoying character at first, but he's getting better and the show is getting really interesting. It turns out that magic is really sexy. I didn't like Julia's storyline at first but it is picking up finally. I'm glad someone finally started a thread because I have questions. Was the Russian professor truthful or did he lie as well as manipulate? Would Brakebill's really have punished Katie and was he right to train Penny differently from his "mentor"? Is Julia getting better training with people outside Brakebills? And what's the deal with Alice's brother? Is he dead or something worse? And why does Eliot hang around with Quentin? He is always close by and joining in to go on excursions when I would think he would be as annoyed with him as Penny is.

First of all, I've been watching this show, and thankfully it's gotten a bit better as the season has progressed. I'm glad I've stuck with it, though it's nowhere near as good as other current genre shows. (Strongly prefer Colony and iZombie and 11.22.63 and many others.)

But it's been entertaining enough to keep me watching.

No nudity, but there has been A LOT of sex.

And that's okay, because some of the girls are pretty cute.
(Though they killed off my favorite.)

mild swearing?

they say the F word a couple times every episode, and sometimes (this week too I think) theye haven't done a very good job of editing it out

Without a doubt, Quentin was 100% the bad guy in the way he just totally shunned and ignored Julia after she didnt get accepted. He deserved whatever she did to him.

There are very few likeable characters on this show.

But that's not the only thing that has made this show tough to watch. Sometimes the storytelling has been very, very choppy.

I'm glad someone finally started a thread because I have questions.
Yes, they really had fox sex.
Yes, they really are all jerks.
Yes, they really are all idiots.
Yes, that was Jane Chatwin.
No, I have no idea why the Beast hasn't just crushed them all yet.
No, the writers aren't very good at crafting a coherent narrative.

But having said all that, it can be a pretty fun show at times, and there's enough to like to keep me coming back week after week. There are some interesting stories and questions buried under some of that writing, and some of the characters are finally starting to get a chance to shine.

I've watched the first two of these, it's oddly charmless but nevertheless interesting. Quentin's hair is shitting me to tears, for godsake man get it out of your face!

I shall now excuse myself from this thread until I have completed it.

I watched 3 to 10 today. Very good, never bored, ep 10 was a stunner.

Q has improved though it isn't saying much. My favorite is Elliot.

The one that really irritates me is Alice because the acting is so bad. She has exactly one expression on her face: pained. All the time. There is something very unpleasant about her. But her family home had me

Power watching it the characters' almost automatic hostility towards any sensible suggestion and weird combative way of talking to each other is.. weird. Maybe they are all a bit high strung because of magic?

Her brother was eaten by demons a year ago. Alice is supposed to have PTSD, although the reveal from episode 10 is that her parents fucked her up way before big brother died.

In an effort to desexualize herself, Alice accidentally tripped over the sexy librarian fetish and out nerdy co-eded Rachel Berry.

It's actually weird seeing this woman without her glasses, or nearly naked, since if the tiny plaid dress and huge glasses that demark her as attractive and not that symmetrical face, 7 of Nine hair, or trim figure, my libido has completely lost it's tracking lock on her as a potential mate (if I was dreaming). Seriously as a kid, maybe I'm face blind, but it took me hours to days to redesignate the person in front of me claiming to be my mother whenever she died or cut her hair.

Julia's story is finally getting interesting since she stopped being such a whiney psycho. Still hard to see why Brakebills rejected her.

Because they don't seemingly have the intuition to pick 'em. They never asked Alice to come.

That was a rather good concept (and reference, lol) with the bottling of the emotions. Though obviously it got quite out of hand..

That Goddess fixed Julia's test (which you won't know until you've see episode 11.) .

Alice is a crazy lady on a mission to save/avenge her brother, so it was good to cut her.
