The Lovely Bones movie was amazing, so how is the book?

I rented The Lonely Bones this weekend and I loved it, it was an amazing experience.

I didn't even know it was based on a book until a friend of mine went "I'll need to read it first". So it brings up a question, is the book any good?

Sure I know the book is almost always better than the movie. There is more back story, you can picture things differently, and everything is just more in depth and you can connect more to it. However then there is The Children of Men book which is so bad I want to burn it and wipe it from my mind. Some books are just really poorly written and even with a good story you can't get into it.

Has anyone read the book?

I have read the first part of the book. I found it far too moving to read and returned it to the person who had leant it to me. That's never happened to me before, but I just found it too upsetting.

I've read the book and it was indeed very moving. Didn't like the ending though. I haven't seen the film yet but I've heard that the ending is more or less the same, so that shouldn't stop you ;).

The book is incredibly moving...it is actually one of the very few pieces of literature that has moved me to tears. The film does a pretty good job of capturing the core moments of the book (some may feel free to differ) and I found the movie to be a visually stunning adaption and it's among my favorite films that I've seen in the past two years. I highly recommend reading the book.

I found the movie to be haunting (no pun intended, I swear!) and quite sad. Whoever the girl playing Susie was, she has a real bright future. And Marky Mark, I really felt for the guy. Of course, I would be exactly like him in that situation.

I never read the book, but I really liked the movie. Don't plan on watching it again soon because it was too upsetting for me.

I want to watch it again right now and just cry and cry, it is that moving. A friend and I both share a love for American Beauty, it's one of our favorite movies, and I told him this is probably better. American Beauty deals with the darkness and beauty of this world while The Lovely Bones drives right into the afterlife like I have never seen it done before, and the love and hardship of this world, it was just amazing.
