The Lost Era

MMCL

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
So I bought the lost era books...

Loved the Sundered, Serpents, TAOTI (which was just as fantastic as everyone said it would be)... but I can't get on with Well Of Souls or Deny Thy Father. Got a few chapters in on both and have got bored with them - and Well Of Souls is just odd.

Is it worth me trying again with these ?

No. Deny Thy Father was an exercise in futility; even right after finishing the book I couldn't tell you what the point of it was. As for Well of Souls, it has rather divided opinions, with some folk who adored it and others who loathed it. I'd say that if you haven't cleaved to the style yet, you probably won't like it anymore just by reading further. You can always come back to them sometimes later--I got so entirely sick of Well of Souls that I took an eight month break before coming back to finish it.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

I also loved the first three novels and have read them several times. Well of Souls was alright.. but not of the same caliber of the previous novels.
I did get through the last 2, but not easily. Don't bother.

I loved the last 2/3 of Well Of Souls; I thought the first third was oddly slow. It made me want to see another novel from Bick, because I thought by the end, she'd really gotten it figured out.

I haven't read SCE, I know she made some contributions there, I'm hoping to get to it some day.

Anyway, I haven't tried the last two, but I usually like Bonanno - is the last one really that bad?

'Well of Souls' was AWFUL. Especially compared to how good the 'Lost Era' Excelsior and Enterprise-B books were.

I liked Catalyst, it wasn't as good as the first three, but it was a good read.

I haven't read Deny Thy Father, don't even own it, the backcover description didn't interest me. Someday, I might read Well of Souls, which I do own.

I too thought Well of Souls was a tough read. It portrayed Captain Garrett as a pissed off single mom always complaining about something. I didnt get that feel from Yesterdays Enterprise that she was like that. I think if it was a different story, it woulda rocked. Deny Thy Father was ok, it was the quickest read of the series for me. I dont have any problems with it really.

Haven't read Well of SOuls and Deny Thy Father, based on terrible reviews, and I don't think I've missed much.

As for the Others:

Serpents among the Ruins - great read, with good, soild prose by DRG3 - 9/10

The Art of The Impossible - Best book of the series, and an all-time favorite :bolian: 10/10

Catalyst of Sorrows - read it on account of Margaret Wander Bonnano's track record... nice. although a little short for my taste 8/10

Special mention goes for the "other" Lost Era novels - CLB's The Buried Age is an epic story which functions as the lead-in to TNG, and the Terok Nor trilogy is a richly-textured prelude to DS9 (the first book by James Swallow is the best of the three, accessible and tells a fairly self-contained story).

Well, for one thing, WoS is set eight years before YE, so maybe Garrett changed over time. And for another, in YE, she was dealing with the near-destruction of her ship, the death of most of her crew, and her displacement into a wartorn future, so she didn't have the luxury of focusing on her personal problems.

I enjoyed Deny Thy Father, the adventures of Riker at the Academy and his early postings wasn't amazing but still a fun read. And I enjoyed it a lot more than Catalyst of Sorrows as well

Well of Souls was dull as dishwater though from what I read. I gave up about a third of the way and never bothered going back to it.

The Art of the Impossible however is awesome, easily my favourite Trek book I've read

Speaking of The Lost Era, has there been any news on the Sisko/Tzenkethi War novel that has been mentioned for about... five years? Wasn't there also a Cardassian War novel/series being thought about too? I'd take those before the Earth/Romulan War any day.

Since that was Marco's project and Marco is no longer with Pocket, I doubt that novel will happen now.

However,
the Tzenkethi are members of the Typhon Pact, so presumably they'll be featured in 2010's Typhon Pact miniseries.

I loved The Sundered and TAOTI. 2 of my favorite Trek books. Catalyst has been hard to finish (I've read 3 books in between) and I still haven't read Well of Souls. Deny Thy Father was decent, even if the Kyle Riker stuff was blah. Buried Age is next in my que :techman:

I liked the Well of Souls. I don't remember the ending details of Deny Thy Father but I remember thinking when it was done there was no reason for that story to have happened. And I'm talking plot wise, like something in the story was telling me this was a set up for something that didn't need to happen.

Up until A Singular Destiny came out The Art of the Impossible was my favorite KRAD book.

I just can't figure out if Serpents Among the Ruins, The Art of the Impossible or Catalyst of Sorrows is my favorite of the original six books. The Sundered is a notch below them.

If we start counting the other 4 books Day of Vipers is in that top grouping as well. Night of Wolves/Dawn of Eagles and The Buried Age are around there with The Sundered.

This has been a good series for me, the only one that didn't work for me was Deny Thy Father.

I'd say it's worth it, simply because it's Star Trek related, but I had to same problem. It took me seven months to read Well of Souls and, with the exception of the New Jedi Order series (which took me three YEARS to get through), it's never taken me more than a week to read any book. I'm still plugging away at Deny Thy Father, and hopefully it won't take THAT long, but it's just as difficult a read, and I'm reading it around other books. I hope Catalyst of Sorrows is better.

I've been reading Catalyst for weeks. I've actually read A Singular Destiny, A Burning House and Q & A while keeping Catalyst going a chapter at a time. I don't hate it, I just find some that of the prose drags on and on. It hasn't really held my interest very strongly. You should still give it a try:)

Catalyst was a difficult read. It took me close to a month to finish it. Normally, I can finish a Trek book in a couple of days. However, once I was finished with it, I was very happy that I stuck with it.

That's a real shame.

That's kick ass. I hope they'll play a large role in it.
