The Lord of the Rings The War of the Rohirrim

I can't remember if we were talking about it in this this thread or the Rings of Power thread (I'm avoiding it since I'm still way behind on it), but Philippa Boyens clarified that The Hunt for Gollum is (and always has been) a single film and that the reported news of a second film is a result of a misunderstanding about a second but unconfirmed live-action film that they're working on.

I read the other day that they are planning on having Gandalf appear in other movies after The Hunt for Gollum, but with the questions already around him doing that one, I have to wonder if he'd really be up for more after it.

Sounds like from interviews that they talked to him about appearing in more than one movie and his was warm to that idea. It seems the confusion over The Hunt for Gollum was that it was two films and he was going to be in both parts but actually it's two different films.

That's how I understood the latest interview with Boyens as well. Just a misunderstanding on Ian's part. Or not even that, the person interviewing Ian might have been mistaken.

In any case, yup. Boyens made it quite clear that the Hunt For Gollem will be one movie.

I'm still surprised they haven't tried to do a trilogy about Aragorn in his youth. One about when he learns the truth about his heritage, meets Arwen, Gandalf and the Dúnedain, then goes south to Rohan and does...something while in the service of King Thengel, Théoden's father. One about his time in Gondor and his (mostly one-sided) rivalry with a young Denethor, and leading the attack on the Corsairs of Umbar. And then one about his hunt for Gollum.

Obviously all three would need a lot of filler to stretch them out to movie-length stories (although I think there's already enough there for the second movie) but there's at least some stuff to work with.

I could definitely see them doing something like that, and they could bring Viggo Mortensen back for openings and closings with an older Aragorn telling the story, while they have a younger actor in the main body of the movies.

A relatively dull character meeting people and doing... things? When you put it like that, how could anyone resist?

Or, Hollywood could decide to make a good movie - hear me out -

... and hire the writer-directors of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves to write another good and original fantasy flick, either in the D&D world, or any other generic and colorful fantasy setting.

Because I don't think there's a damn thing interesting to say or dramatize about the time Aragorn met Arwen. Maybe Elrond had some other Elf dude in mind for her to marry? But she was swept away by Aragor'sn slam poetry and freestyle rap skills? Oh, sorry, I meant his quiet nobility, with maybe a tiny dash of youthful attitude. Sounds great.

Not. :p

The romance of Arwen and Aragorn is supposed to be, in some ways, a mirror to Beren and Luthien, the great romance of Elf and Man in of Tolkien's work. Its not really enough to make a movie all about it, but just based off what Tolkien wrote there is more then enough material to do an Aragorn origin movie in general, complete with triumph, tragedy, and a few relatively big battles. That certainly has more potential then a sequel to the modern D&D movie that bombed and managed to be worse then the one with Jeremy Irons.

While I agree that he's way off on Honor Among Thieves, he is right about the tale of Aragorn and Arwen, while Gaith is (as usual) spectacularly wrong.

Besides, I wasn't advocating for those movies to be made, I'm just surprised Hollywood hasn't tried yet. If I can see the potential there, then they surely can.

I wondered the moment I saw Cox was going to be a guest on the show if this film would come up and I was thrilled to see they had a clip for it and everything.

I also loved Colbert's guessing game of trying to figure out which book Cox supposedly read by Tolkien that wasn't The Lord of the Rings and seems to think it was The Silmarillion. The fact he called it a nice story (emphasis on the singular) makes me think it wasn't that book.

Yeah, no. Honor Among Thieves is actually fun.

Agree to disagree. I thought it was nothing but cringey junk, with mediocre actors putting on bad performances, and not even fun bad like Irons in the first D&D movie. My opinion doesn't seem too off the mark, seeing as how it almost certainly didn't make a profit. I think a D&D movie could work, but it needs to be earnest and not a bad comedy, and it definitely needs a better director/better writers then the people behind Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Would very much enjoy an adventure with Aragorn. My favorite LOTR character period, film or book.
