The Lord of the Rings The War of the Rohirrim

We have the first look at what the movie actually looks like:

We see King Helm Hammerhand and members of his family (I think they're all his kids) Héra, Haleth and Hama. All were existing characters, although Hera was just an unnamed daughter, apparently she's a POV character in the movie so she's gotten quite the upgrade.

When they said it was anime style they weren't kidding. I like the look, but I'll be curious to see how it translates with a more general audience.
Was not expecting 2D animation. So here for that!

Looks pretty sharp and about what I expected (in a good way). Hopefully we get a trailer soon.

I like the look of it, it's about what you'd expect for this kind of more adult oriented action anime.

Andy Serkis told ACE Comic-Con that the title of The Hunt for Gollum isn't set in stone:

“The Hunt for Gollum is a work-in-progress title. It may not end up being called that. It’s going to very much be the world of Middle Earth according to Gollum’s experience of it,” Serkis said.
“It is so early; it would be unfair to commit to anything at this point. But I will say that it will be a deep dive where we investigate Gollum’s character. There may be characters that we recognize that might be coming back. I’m not going to say who.”
“We started to talk about this roughly about eight months or so ago,” Serkis recalled. “They were saying, ‘Andy we really want to reinvigorate Middle Earth. There are so many fresh stories that we want to get involved with. We want to launch this new wave by taking us back into the world of Gollum.’ They asked me to direct. This is a dream come true. To work with the people I love working with in a country I adore working in.”

One of the articles I read about it a week or two ago, made it sound like it will deal with Gollum's whole backstory, not just the "Hunt for Gollum" between The Hobbit and LOTR, so that might be why they're not sure about sticking with that title.

I already read about the 'Hunt For Gollum ' on another forum. I am on the fence about it. I loved the books I loved PJs original trilogy. Suffered the 'The Hobbit' films. The TV show, meh... It's a wait and see.

I wish this was live action, but that's just a personal preference; it's not going to stop me from watching it. The animation does look quite nice.

This is a story I was hoping to see adapted eventually, for a few reasons. First, because Helm Hammerhand is a badass. Second, I just love Middle-earth and want to see more of it put to screen. My third reason I'll put in spoilers for those who haven't read the Appendices:

This is also when Saruman is given the tower of Orthanc by Beren, the then-Ruling Steward of Gondor. I imagine they'll include him finding the Palantir to use it in his search for the One Ring, and I also expect that will tie into the scene at the end of the trailer with the mention of Mordor hunting for rings.

On a totally different, also spoilery note, I also wonder how...

They will resolve the war and also Hera's story. In the Appendices, Gondor finally shows up and helps Rohan defeat the Dunlendings after they were pinned down for a while by a simultaneous invasion by the Corsairs of Umbar. I assume that will still happen in this movie, and I wonder if maybe Hera will wind up marrying Beregond, the son of Steward Beren and leader of the Gondorian army that arrived to assist Rohan, who was described as one of the greatest captains of Gondor. It would be a nice way to re-emphasize the bond between Gondor and Rohan that would persist into the War of the Ring and beyond. But they could do just about anything with her, since this specific character isn't actually mentioned at all in the Appendices. The only reference to anyone similar is to a "daughter of Helm Hammerhand," who isn't brought up again after Freca attempted to force her to marry his son, Wulf.

Looks prettty cool. I haven't read the LOTR appendices yet, so I can't judge how it matches what they say, but it looks good.

Trailer thoughts

Well, they certainly aren't breaking the bank on the animation, there were times where I'm pretty sure you could count the frames with one hand (although its not as bad as some Netflix shows, like The Dragon Prince which I'm convinced is animated in negative frames somehow). It does feel like its a low budget direct to streaming animated movie that they decided to put into theaters at the last minute, although as animated LOTR movies go at least it looks better then the horrible Bakshi film.

I am worried about the character focus, though. The story should be Helm's story, not his borderline OC daughter's story. I'm fine with them naming her and expanding her role, but I don't need a movie thats half fan fiction (thats what Rings of Power is for).

I think this could be a very good movie, but I don't think it will play well to the general audience. Maybe name recognition will help it, but I see it being a modest financial success at best and a bomb at worse, regardless of its actual quality. I know that people like my Dad, who likes all the live action films, won't want to see it because he doesn't like animated films (especially anime looking ones), and I think that is a very common opinion with a lot of the general audience for a LOTR movie, even in 2024.

Yeah, I have to admit, I am a little shocked this is actually getting a full scale theatrical release, this really seems to me like the kind of thing you would expect to see as direct to streaming release. I don't say this because of the quality, it looks good, it's just that I question if there's enough interest in an LOTR anime to bring the kind of money a theatrical release needs to be successful, especially in an era where even some of the biggest franchises in the world struggle to be successful in theaters.

Looks so damn good and I really hope it gets a wide theater release. I need to experience this film on the big screen.

If that does happen, it'll be curious to see who they cast as Saruman...or if they'll keep him in a silent or unseen role.

Yeah, I'm curious about that, too. Admittedly, I don't know the story well and Tolkien was notoriously poor at female roles beyond Éowyn (and to a lesser degree, Arwen), so the canvas is open to fill in and I'm excited to see how the film plans to paint in those blanks.

Very good analysis:

It's an Anime feature film. It'll do well in Japan and various other parts of the World just on that aspect alone. The fact it'll appeal to Tolkien fans on top of that is just a plus.

Ian McKellen has said that Gandalf will be The Hunt For Gollum, and they want him to come back, but I have to wonder if they have a plan for dealing how much he's aged since The LOTR trilogy. It's gonna be a bit hard to buy that he's playing a younger version of Galdalf, who I don't think should even age, when he is so much older now. And we don't even know how much longer it will be before they start filming, so he's going to be even older by then. Are they going to just have him in a few scenes and digitally de-age him?
Maybe if The Stranger from The Rings of Power is Gandalf, they could just bring in Daniel Weyman instead?

Does it really matter? Gandalf looked pretty old, and covered with facial hair.... will the average movie goer notice, or even care?

He probably shouldn't do his own stunts, though [/sarcasm]

Gandalf was the same age for 2000 years, and there aren't really any big battles for him to participate in this time, so I don't see why McKellen can't come back. Put the beard and nose on him, and maybe a little makeup around the eyes, and there probably won't be much of a difference.
