The long awaited sequel to A Hitchhiker's Guide is being released...

Re: The long awaited sequel to A Hitchhiker's Guide is being released.

What sequel? Adams came back from the dead and no one told me???

(Seriously, though, I vaguely recall hearing something about this but I was sort of hoping it was just netrumor and that the idea would go away. While I have no problems with people writing new Bond novels, or even Sherlock Holmes books, Hitchhiker's was such a unique vision by one man that, frankly, it's as unthinkable as someone writing "Lord of the Rings: The Next Generation".

I'll pick it up soon. I heard it was decent, but seemed like a pale imitation of Adams' humor.

I'm as dubious as anyone else about ...And Another Thing, but I'm probably going to buy it today after reading this extract http://entertainment.timesonline.co...inment/books/book_extracts/article6857881.ece
Reviews have been very positive so far, so I'm going to break my normal policy of waiting for paperbacks. I have no expectation of it living up to the older books so that will probably help. That said, that extract did impress me a lot.

I'm curious just because the ending to the last book is still pissing me off today.

It's got to be at least as good as Mostly Harmless, a.k.a. "Douglas Adams' Contractual Obligation Novel"...

Since I liked Artemis Fowl, I might pick it up.

Re: The long awaited sequel to A Hitchhiker's Guide is being released.

I sometimes if I'm the only person in the world who actually loves Mostly Harmless.

At any rate, I'm 95 pages in so far and it's pretty good. The ending of Mostly Harmless has been nicely negated, which ought to please at least some people. And the Big Z is back!

Oh, and I've laughed out loud a few times already. That's a good sign no matter what your perception of 6 of 3 is I'd say.

Re: The long awaited sequel to A Hitchhiker's Guide is being released.

I am completely unfamiliar with the author, and it seems kinda weird to not have Douglas Adams writing it, but since I am a serial series completist I imagine I will buy it and at least give myself a chance to enjoy what might be something wonderful.

Wow. I was totally negative about the idea (aside from the idea of negating the ending of Mostly Harmless, as mentioned so succinctly by Barnacle - sorry, HappyDay, but I didn't like it at alllllll), but gee, you guys give me some hope. I probably would have read it sooner or later - I wouldn't have been able to help myself - but now I might make it sooner rather than later.

You're not the only one. Mostly Harmless is my absolute favorite of the 1st 5. Unlike the others, it has an actual plot that is largely understandable. Random is a very believable teenager. I love the bit with the old seer woman with the solar powered copy machine. And the entire Ford plot kept me on the edge of my seat.

That except certainly has me sold. It's not quite Adams, but it is damn close and seems like it would be pretty entertaining. I'll have to pick it up.

Awww I thought this was about a sequel to the movie...but I might have to check this out.

Saw it, but I'm waiting for the paperback version:)

Well, that sells me on at least checking it out.

Re: The long awaited sequel to A Hitchhiker's Guide is being released.

I got it yesterday. Not started reading it yet. I need to stop buying so many books, I've got far too many right now.
I might read it as my next book though.

I think I'm going to go the Christmas-list route... :D

...and I should give MH another try I guess. I've rarely been so bitterly disappointed in a book as I recall. :(
