The Little Black Box

Fezziwig

Ensign
Newbie
It's orange and black. It makes quite a few appearances in the classic series but it's never refereed to like the Communicator or Tricorder, The characters will insert a "tape" to view it. I guess you could call it a view master. Is there an official name for it?

You might find what you're looking for in the Props Re-Used thread -- though that’s an awful lot of pages to slog through.

This device showed up in a number of TOS episodes, but I don't recall it being used to view “tapes.” It was apparently meant to be some kind of monitoring-recording gadget. It was actually a Westinghouse Lumina radio-desk lamp combo with a bit of redecoration.

I think he's actually referring to the 'little black box' with the red handle on the top, that Kirk occasionally read his log into, and that Yeoman Rand (and/or her successors) carried around on an irregular basis.

I'm thinking it's the one that's about the size of a book with a U shaped handle on the top and a truncated four sided pyramid on the face.

Thanks. That was very cool how they took that lamp thing and made something out of it. Anyway that's not the box I was referring to.

That's it.

Which is the one I mentioned here:v

And the one that M'Sharak pointed out above.
