Who here loves The Lion King?

This is probably my favorite Disney move ever. It's getting a limited 2 week run in theaters starting on 9/16. This is great for those people that have never experienced it in theaters or want to show it to their kids.

I'm planning to check it out this weekend. The great thing about the relrelease is that it is being shown on both 3d AND 2d. Anyone else planning to check it out?

I'm not all that thrilled with the 3D aspect, but I might go check it out just for the nostalgia. The Lion King still remains one of my favorite Disney Films (Probably right behind Beauty and the Beast), and probably my favorite Disney Broadway play.

I went to see it to cinema when I was a kid.
I think Lion King is one of the better Disney cartoons,
and I have fond memories of watching it and also listening the soundtrack later:)

It's one of my favourite films ever so I'm definitely going to see it. It's not out here until 7th October though so I have to wait a little bit. I'll probably go see it in 3D, it'll be great just to see it on the big screen again.

Just got back from seeing it, in the same cinema where I saw it on its original release back in 1994. Loved seeing it on the big screen again; we had it on VHS in the 90s, but I haven't watched it since VHS went out of fashion (so, a long time; probably not in the whole last decade).

Seeing it as an adult made me realize how offbeat the structure of it is. It doesn't follow the traditional three-act structure at all. It's more like a two act play, with "Hakuna Matata" as a bridge between them. It's also a musical where the main character has only one real song. And it's a great movie.

The rerelease is another demonstration of how much better-suited 3D is to animation, because this was one of the best 3D movies I've seen. Also of note, the film is clearly going to be #1 at the box office this weekend, so expect more of these 3D Disney rereleases in the future (next year is Aladdin's 20th anniversary, and I'd bet anything we'll be seeing it get the same treatment).

Does Scar murdering Mufasa traumatize children in full 3D glory now? ;)

I think I might check this out. That's my favorite Disney animated movie.

I don't know if I want to bother seeing in theaters again. The Blu-Ray is coming out in November, and I think that will look far more impressive.

There's something to seeing it on the big screen again (this is a movie that really benefits from it, with all those big safari shots).

How do you even convert a drawn animation movie to 3D?

Fairly easily. Animation is done in layers, with the background, and then the characters on top of it, painted onto transparent cells so that the artist doesn't have to redraw a background element for every single frame. Depth effects are achievable with many layers like this, shot with the multiplane camera, and it'd be simple enough to use the same concept to create a stereoscopic effect by varying the offset of different layers.

That's assuming that they still had all the original cells and were willing to reshoot them all, which, now that I think about it, probably wasn't actually the case. In that case, you'd do it the same way you made any movie shot in 2D stereoscopic: A combination of cutting apart and deforming each frame in 3D space to simulate the view given by the second camera.

Movie quality usually is Blu-ray quality. Most of these transfers to Blu-ray are what movies originally looked like before they hit home video.

I don't know if that's true or not, but in my experience, movies on Blu-Ray tend to look better than how they looked in the theater. This could be my eyes, though.

Either way, I'm going to be buying The Lion King on Blu-Ray when it comes out, so I don't want to spend extra money to also see it in theaters.

Well, how it's SUPPOSED to look is what I should have said. I'm not a fan of watching moving movies with horrible projectors and artifacts swarming the screen and bad sound... and that happened a lot at the the theater I quit going to.

I saw the movie today at the theater. I had a lot of fun. This movie deserves to be seen on the big screen again with all of its beautiful animation and songs. There was a pretty big audience during the time that I went. I saw many kids. Seeing the opening Circle of Life segment on a giant screen was a treat.

I'm glad that the rerelease is making so much money. :techman:

Yeah, I remember being a kid and getting whiplash at how fast Simba grows up. In one quick fade, in one shot! No montage, just bam, whole new look! :p

I was reading some of the negative reviews on this movie and what I saw makes me thing those critics are either just angry at life, or have lost touch with reality. Some of the comments I saw, from the racist hyenas to the bad music (Which the soundtrack is considered one of the best Disney soundtracks ever) to the "dated" comments I saw, were just laughable.

Picked up TLK on Blu-Ray tonight.

Got this awesome free metal Blu-Ray case at Best Buy since I preordered! :techman:

This only comes out in the UK on Friday, and I'm taking my new romantic interest too see it (as being a big Disney fan she basically begged me)

Anyway I can't say I've ever been much of a Disney fan myself, even as a kid. I never liked the sugary sweetness of it all and the music numbers were seriously not to my tastes. Haha, so what I'm saying is, will I actually enjoy this film?
Obviously I've matured since I was a kid, so is there a story I can appreciate in it? Nice animation, characters etc? Its not just like some kiddy mush is it full of crap jokes and cheesy songs?

I don't even know how to respond to this post. I'm amazed you haven't see The Lion King yet.

Most of the classic Disney movies I would never describe as "sugary sweet." Disney movies have some of the most evil villains I've ever seen. There are songs, yeah, but they're all relevant to the story. The Lion King is probably one of the best movies of all time.
