The Legend of Korra: Book 4

I got the impression that it's just some form of pure spirit energy, common to all spirits. Vaatu was just able to call on a hell of a lot more than most. Indeed I'm pretty sure the vines are consumed by each discharge, so it's not like there's an unlimited supply. At least not unless Kuvira is stupid enough to try harvesting spirits enmass. If she does then I'd wager she'll end up in the Fog of Lost Souls in no time flat.

^Vaatu was scattered and should require 10,000 years to reform. Although I suppose it's conceivable that the spirit-vine weapon is tapping into his scattered power somehow.

Well 10,000 years wait time can be subverted. Plot prop Jinora in the finale demonstrated that, when she helped Korra find the light inside Vaatu. Which restored Raava.

Now this is all hypothetical and speculative, but if Varrick's spirit weapon can harness and discharge spirit energy. It could theoretically be an artificial way to reconstitute Vaatu. Maybe use it on or in the presence of Korra to bring Vaatu out of her. Another way would be to gather a ton of the spirit vines (presumably because Kuvira wants a big demonstration) and Vaatu remerges. Korra leaving the spirit portals open could make the passage of spirit energy from the physical plane and spiritual plane much easier to traverse.

Again this is speculative.

4x07: "Reunion"

- Did you see that? Korra blushed when Asami complemented her hair! Did you see it?

- Bolin is really coming into his own. I wonder why he didn't immediately subdue the mechs with earthbending. Bending was shown to be more powerful than the tech they're using. And why didn't he simply bend the metal they were made of?

- Nice to see Korra using Toph's technique of using vines to "see" everything. I didn't think that she had learned it.

- I was hoping that the new Earth King and Korra would get it on. Just a quick thought to amuse myself. Then he actually asked her out.

- Now Kuvira has gone too far. She's going to kill the banyan-grove tree. I expected the show to give me something to turn my sympathies and this is it.

- This episode is exactly half-way through Book 4.

^ You can't metal bend the exo suits. In season 1 of Korra it was said that they're made of platinum. They're too pure (lacking minerals in the metal) to be bent.

So the tree comprising the Foggy Swamp is a spirit who circumvented Avatar Wan's command? That actually makes a lot of sense.

Damn you Kuvira! So not only are you racist too, you're anti-spirit/environment???!!! Someone's sure begging for a nice takedown by Toph.

Hahaha. Motion seconded.

Also, Bolin can't metalbend, as we were shown in Book 3. It's a skill that Korra managed to pick up but Bolin completely failed at -- ultimately getting lavabending as his "level-up" ability instead.

Good changing of the gears episode. Boy, the Korra/Asami subtext is getting extremely text-y! I really loved Korra's blue outfit short-haired look.

Kuvira is attacking Toph's swamp!!! If we don't have an amazing fight between those two I am going to be sorely disappointed!!! But if that happens Toph would inevitably loose and that's gonna tough (get it?) to watch.

I have no doubt Toph is going to deliver. The only question is, will she top her feat of taking down the Fire Nation's gigantic caterpillar drill in the siege of Ba Sing Se?

Toph can't beat Kuvira, though. That would be the end of the story. Unless she defeats her in a duel and then the army overwhelms her or something.

I especially liked Mako asking "just what's going on between the two of you?"
Yeah, that was a pleasant surprise. I may just ship them now.

That wasn't Toph, that was Aang (with help of course). I am however looking froward to her taking down more airships.

At this point I can only assume that the creators are intentionally writing an attraction between Korra and Asami, but since this is a Nickelodeon show we'll obviously never see anything happen between them. I am expecting Korra not to show any more interest in boys in the rest of the season though...

I think it's the writers having a bit of fun with the fans, maybe even a nod to these theories but as you said it's airing on a kids channel and this is probably as far as it goes.

Given that we are only a few episodes from the end of the show i highly doubt they'd start introducing a love story now for Korra. She had this with Mako and it's over and now it's too late.

I'm also curious to see what Kuvira will do with those spirit bombs, i.e. the Avatar equivalent of a nuclear bomb. She might want to use it to wipe out Republic city and start a war to conquer all other nations which might be the endgame battle between her and Korra (and Korra needs to shape up tremendously to make it out of that battle).

No reason she couldn't. Lots of people are attracted to both sexes to some degree. And Korra and Asami are about college age (21 and 22 respectively) now, which is an age at which a lot of people are experimenting and exploring their sexual options. There was a study a while back in which over 60 percent of female college students expressed at least some same-sex curiosity. (The percentage of male students who admitted such curiosity was considerably lower, but I suspect that's due to our society conditioning men to be more uncomfortable with same-sex affection and touch than women are, so the male students were less able to admit it to themselves or to a survey-taker.)

I had a friend in college who told me once (after admitting that she was attracted to the same unavailable female friend that I was) that she didn't believe in ruling someone out as a romantic prospect simply because of their sex. I think that's a nice attitude, and I'd like to think it applies to Korra and Asami. If Korra likes Asami, it's not about choosing women as a group over men as a group, it's about caring for Asami as an individual. It's more personal that way, more romantic.

Now, it certainly could be that the reason Korra and Mako didn't work out was because she actually liked girls better and needed time to discover that, but it doesn't have to be. The Avatar is about balance, after all, and she has been both male and female in her past lives, so I wouldn't be surprised if she -- or any other Avatar -- were bisexual.

Given that we are only a few episodes from the end of the show i highly doubt they'd start introducing a love story now for Korra.

Then again, since the show's ending anyway, and since it's already off TV, that gives them greater freedom to do what they want without worrying about the consequences. I doubt it'll happen, but I'd love it if the final scene of the final episode showed Korra and Asami kissing full on the lips.

It's a nice thought, but I'm pretty sure this show was in the can before they knew that Nick would shunt it over to digital platforms only.

Honestly, I'm just amazed we've got as much as we have so far.

I could see it being a King Bumi situation, where Toph lets Kuvira win until the timing is right to take her down.

Just a few random observations:

- Silly as it is I liked Varrick winking and grinning at the guard just as he looks in his wanted poster. Varrick and Wu are dangerously over-the-top with the humor but I enjoy them both.

- That lavabending raises Bolin's game and makes him a force to be reckoned with.

- I really like the design of Asami's hot rod.

I like how Varrick turned out this season.. before he was the comedy relief character (in a show where you already had some including Bolin) but he was so over the top that it sometimes was just annoying just as that Earth Kingdom prince is now.

However in this season they expanded his character and let him be something more than just a buffoon.. i really like his character progression. And i still believe that Zhu Lin is undercover and just waiting for the perfect moment to sabotage Kuvira.

Bolin has also improved.. he is my favorite character on the show but i especially like the scenes where he shuts up and gets serious because then you really know that the excrement has hit the fan. What i also noticed is how powerful Bolin really can be.. when they broke through that border post the other benders fought and got hit by the guards but once Bolin unleashed himself in full battle mode you could really see the difference (also a nice touch how he effortlessly just snapped the binding ropes meaning he could have escaped at any time but chose not to).

And yeah.. the Hot Rod was cool (i like this design mix of old and new elements).

She's at a similar age to King Bumi. She has probably learned all those 85 ways of directing energy which Bumi told Aang about.

My bet is that Toph either takes down a giant tree cutting machine or a giant mech. Or maybe a combination of both, a giant mech with chainsaw hands for cutting down the tree.
