The Least Disliked Season Premiere

Sakonna

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
An easily definable list for our next episode elimination game -- what is the least disliked Star Trek season premiere? Typing this out, I realize this is an area Trek has always struggled, from "Man Trap" straight on to "Brother"! Should be an entertaining bloodbath (though obviously there's a lot to love here as well)...

THE RULES. The basic idea is your standard elimination game. Below is a list of all the season premieres of every Star Trek series (per original airdate). Eliminate your least favorite or the one you deem the 'worst.' Please provide an EXPLANATION for why you are eliminating your choice and be sure to copy and paste the list with your choice removed.

Finally, please leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

No tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode just because you feel they would threaten your preferred episode's chance to win.
Enjoy!

I'll start by knocking out "Shockwave, Part II." What is even happening in these episodes? I mean, I do recall it's a bunch of Temporal Cold War nonsense, but it all feels so insubstantial and meaningless. We're just watching the writers spin their wheels while they wait to be struck with some inspiration of what they're actually going to DO with the TCW.

I never understood the point of “Night.” Voyager faced much more daunting situations than a void without stars. Why would that be a trigger for Janeway’s guilt over stranding the crew?

The Child. Would be the worst story of its season by far if not for Shades of Grey... or Up The Long Ladder... or The Outrageous Okona... well, whatever, it's still a terrible, terrible episode that's appallingly sexist to boot.

Nothing better to do. And you need to delete "The Vulcan Hello" from your list.

Eliminating Man Trap. I just think TOS hadn’t found its groove this early. The salt vampire isn’t all that interesting and the main dynamic that made TOS awesome wasn’t quite there.

I thought Man Trap was only the production order premiere and Gone Before was the premiere, or do I have it backwards?

About Night. Having no stars wasn’t as big a deal as having no resupply or repair opportunities and no variation in daily activity.

I can think of two as a virtual tie, but after a coin toss:

DIS, Season 2: "Brother" [spoiler tag your elimination reasons for this episode]

It's the last episode of DSC I saw in its entirety and since then I've only seen a few clips or prologues (pre-titles teaser scene) and then had the sense to turn the channel to something requiring a higher IQ - such as "The Wiggles Meet Dora the Explorer" - but, wow, it was awful. The new theme is as horrendous as it is heavyhanded, are the young in the audience thick in ways they weren't in 1968, 1988, or 1998?! Fake Spock (when the show should be making itself its own and not using old characters as a lame crutch to lean on as a hook.) I'll keep Serana for Skyrim. The non-science regarding signals received from across the universe they get simultaneously despite Trek in 1966 having enough working brain cells to understand a very basic sci-fi concept involving the passage of signals over space and time, nor do I buy the concept that the red angel suit can travel time and space and dispense suspense along with waffles with syrup at every turn. Pike is nothing like his 1964 original (though his acting is of high caliber considering the script's dialogue and I can fathom why people are calling for his own show!), and to say nothing of the hideous new outfits with sloppy collars and that's not mentioning the stupid colorful uniforms in-joke yet, not to mention the guy who has a Geordi visor and "just had borg bits removed" skullcap. For a visual medium, the collars and in-jokes are out of place. Tilly's a big letdown too, acting like any old teenage burger flipper and not a trained officer given she's on the Bridge and all. Don't tell me she's the comic relief character... And if nothing else, the name "Jet Reno" is so sophistic and tacky it wouldn't be out of place in Star Wars episode III alongside General Grievous and other oh-so-brilliant character names... ugh... The visual f/x can't make any of this any better, nor would it if they swapped Burnham's voice for Barney the Dinosaur's. But it's a prequel, ENT isn't much better but that's not the other episode that I considered for the coin toss. Or if I didn't do a coin toss I would have looked at which shows use the diminutive "tech" instead of the more formal and grown-up word "technology" that Trek series tended to adhere to. DSC would still lose out.

I always thought "Apocalypse Rising" was a disastrous season opener. The story structure is terrible, and it's badly executed to a degree that's embarrassing. The blocking of the big sequence where they're trying to reveal the Changeling... cringe-worthy, so awkward and poorly thought out.

VOY, Season 2: "The 37's," because IIRC, it wasn't really a season premiere at all and was just held over from the first season. And because the finding Amelia Earhart premise is pretty damn cheesy.

Killing "BASICS, PART II". It was the last produced episode of season 2, but held over as the season 3 premiere. I never liked UPN for doing that... it made them cut the season 3 production by 4 episodes, which is why they have 4 less total episodes than DS9. That could have been used toward making the season better, as the last 1/4 of season 3 was fantastic. (BEFORE AND AFTER to SCORPION)

And besides that... the Kazon.

"Encounter At Farpoint" I literally can not get through, and that's not true of any other episode on this list. It seems like it would be fun to rewatch the TNG pilot, for the Trek history element alone, but it's all so terrible!
