The least disliked episode of TOS - season one

Goodbye Arena. I know it has some kind of special status but I can't overlook the Gorn's costume or overhear the noises he makes. Plus he's stupid and doesn't build a cannon while Kirk puts together all the clues.

Where No Man Has Gone Before
The Naked Time
What Are Little Girl's Made Of?
Dagger of the Mind
The Corbomite Maneuver
Shore Leave
The Squire of Gothos
The Devil in the Dark
Errand of Mercy
The City on the Edge of Forever

A Taste of Armageddon. The most clichéd episode of the entire series.
That would have been my second choice after Archons - but only because I spotted Archons on the list first ;)

Shore Leave has got to go - far too light on plot and heavy on silly antics.

Where No Man Has Gone Before
The Naked Time
What Are Little Girls Made Of?
Dagger of the Mind
The Corbomite Maneuver
The Squire of Gothos
The Devil in the Dark
Errand of Mercy
The City on the Edge of Forever

Wow, two of my predicted top three have gone, and there's no reason why What Are Little Girls Made Of? should have outlasted them. I'm not fond of this episode; it seems to condemn the idea of androids, there are several inconsistencies with the portrayal of androids, and I've never understood why no attempt was made to preserve the technology found. I see that general attitudes at the time cast robots in the role of "antagonist", but it's hardly progressive for Star Trek.

Taking out Dagger of the Mind. The silly elevator drop, the goofy controls for the glowy-light of emptiness, crawl-through ducting and electricity.

Goodbye "The Squire of Gothos" Trelane is a little too over the top, and the reveal that he is a child is cliche.

The Devil in the Dark
Errand of Mercy
The City on the Edge of Forever

To be fair, it was less clichéd at the original date of broadcast. But agreed, the episode had to go ;)

I'll get rid of The Naked Time, out of the bunch left I would say it's my least favourite.

Where No Man Has Gone Before
The Corbomite Maneuver
The Devil in the Dark
Errand of Mercy
The City on the Edge of Forever

Bye Errand of Mercy. A good episode, but not as strong as the others.

See you later Corbomite Maneuver. Interesting concepts, but other episodes took the same points and did them better.

PS: Some really odd voting here. I'm torn between being angry that some great episodes got knocked out by a single opinion, and happy that the order of elimination was different from usual!

Also - I'd recommend a rule change. Each person is only allowed 3 votes total. That way you really have to choose which episodes you hate, rather than just jumping in every 3rd vote.

Well, of the three left, Where No Man Has Gone Before is probably the weakest storyline. A fallible man is given godlike powers is a pretty old and oft-used idea, so it goes. Though I really do like the episode, it is just not as good as the other two.

Sir Rhosis

The Devil in the Dark
The City on the Edge of Forever

Might get lynched for this one, but whilst City is a good episode. I've got to eliminate it.

The Devil in the Dark

No lynching here - while COTEOF is good, it has to be looked at in isolation from the reputation it's garnered over the years.

I don't mind Devil being the winner - it embodies the "seek out new life" mantra of Star Trek very well, and throws in "dealing with intolerance" and "understanding our enemies to make them our friends" vibe too!

I don't agree. That has the potential to be problematic when we come to less popular series. Besides, the game has worked fine without such a rule.

Devil in the Dark wins. I'll have season two up later today.

This thread made me sad. I like every single one of those episodes, even the one I voted for.

And The Devil in the Dark is a worthy choice to be the winner, too!

Oh, well, bring on the next one!

Why would it be problematic? Surely there are 9 people voting in each thread. It would make people think harder about their votes and add consequence to each decision.
