The Least Disliked Episode 2023: VOY Season 5

Can they be any less subtle with this one?

Stink Tank

Even the Pakleds had more intellect. Also, it's the old "you're better than these limited life forms" Spockshlock again, too...

I was coming to ax "Latent Image", but for other reasons, which is that the timeline on this one drives me insane. The backstory is dated to a time before Seven arrived on the ship -- yet in the flashbacks, Paris is the nurse and there is no Kes to be seen.

If all this stuff with the Doctor had occurred while Kes was still on the ship, there is no way she would not have been substantially involved. Kes was always a heavy presence when the rest of them were debating the Doctor's rights.

There is even another space in the narrative where these flashbacks would have fit! There is a period of time after Kes left but before Seven was invited in. Those first few eps she is parked in the cargo bay, treated with distrust and not looped in to ship events. This could have been set somewhere after "The Gift" and before "Year Of Hell" and then it fits.

I hate the laziness of the writing in "Latent Image", and the disrespect for the show's own history inherent in it.

"Thirty Days" The water planet is cool, but the rest of this story is so meh. I don't like these kinds of flashback framing devices, and the punishment/demotion of Paris is so inconsistent, we see crew pull so many crazier stunts along the way without any punishment at all.

I was going to take out Dark Frontier earlier but needed to go away. It's very well executed, but I wasn't a fan of the watered-down Queen, or the fact that Janeway is confident about taking on a Borg ship now. It's a bit much.

Night is next. A pretty decent start to the season with an intriguing premise with the darkness. I wasn't a fan of the Malon, and I wasn't sure if Janeway would hide away after being stuck in a void. She's stronger than that.

This sounds fairly disturbing, given that a computer is telling a human how to date:

Someone to Watch Over Me

Or pointless, or like you or me telling a cat or dog how to date - which is even more pointless since everyone's wanting them spayed and/or neutered, since they already know how to do it and aren't there enough decent humans in the 24th-and-a-half century there who could explain to Seven how to date, and so forth and so on...

Here's a partially fun review to watch over:

Not a fan of "Equinox," not least because I felt Janeway was far too self-righteous for someone who had never been tested in the same way Ransom had. Also, it reminded me that Janeway had never been tested in the same way Ransom had, in the sense that Voyager's journey had not been nearly so challenging, or even as challenging as I had hoped for back when the series began.

Winner: "Timeless"

Timeless is my favourite episode of VOY so that has to win. It's Harry Kim's finest episode by far. Well, not that it's hard. ;)

You just beat me to it @Brennyren but we were unanimous at least.

Future Harry's tortured soul is a great watch, seeing him trying his best to correct the mistake he made years earlier. Voyager crashing on that ice planet as well is something else!

The end of the scene did not have a deleted part where Janeway promotes Harry. Unless they did. :shifty:

"Timeless" indeed is timeless and is one of VOY's all-time greats.

I feel the same. All Ransom was basically asking was that Janeway show his crew some consideration. She made it very clear that she would not. The Equinox's crew's actions were certainly wrong, but there were extenuating circumstances, which Janeway refused to acknowledge. If she'd been that much of a hard-:censored: when B'Elanna clobbered Carey, she would have been busted to crewman and sent to the brig for a week.

Indeed, that was some great FX.

I actually have ten moments in the series where Janeway promoting Harry would have made the most sense (hmmm... for some reason no one looks surprised). I don't list "Timeless" because the young Harry in that episode hadn't really done anything. The heroism came from an alternate version of Harry who would never exist now.

In fact, young Harry in Timeless is almost responsible for getting them all killed ;-)

What are the 10 moments?

Wow, writing that "Counterpoint" elimination was a rush! Felt great to type it all out!

@Takeru, you can have your "Visitor"-killing dagger back now. I might want to borrow it again in Enterprise season 3, there's probably the next Universally Beloved Classic which is Intensely Despised by me. :bolian:

I think I may know which Enterprise episode you are referring to as I've just looked at the list of season 3 episodes. I love Enterprise season 3, but I find it very difficult to remember what happened in which episode because they are serialised.
