The least disliked episode 2021 - VOY Season Five

BlueStuff

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
Our addictive biyearly game of rapid elimination returns - now able to include Disco's third season as well as the debut years of Picard and Lower Decks. It's generally a lot of fun, providing a chance to mentally revisit those episodes you may not have thought about in a while. With that in mind, why not play again?

So, here's the game. The basic idea is your standard elimination game. I'll provide a list of the episodes for each season and you need to eliminate your least favorite or the one you deem the 'worst.' Please provide an EXPLANATION for why you are eliminating your choice and be sure to copy and paste the list with your choice removed. Finally, leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

No tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode just because you feel they would threaten your preferred episode's chance to win.
Pretty simple. Enjoy! :bolian:

Another season loaded with goodies - as in great episodes, not ones good for picking nits off of...

...which leads me to immediately finger "The Disease" as being an exception to that. Trek has generally had a squeamishness problem discussing stories relating to sexual activity, unless it's Kirk getting it on to "teach love" (which has its own set of issues, most involve the audience laughing at it, but that's neither here nor there right now.) This episode is no exception, since it has Harry saying a line about being infected at the end except he's not got a disease but the result of some goofy psychological bond being broken because he and a telepathic species got under the sheets for a while. They arguably could have been bold as well as more direct and really take the reins and deliver something more powerful. I just got done watching an old sitcom discussing when sex is best (caring for one another since most people who care don't have anything to bestow, but that's neither here nor there right now, because that's almost as tangential as the far out space nutty way this episode tried to sell it.) I could go on forever. This episode is needing more than just ointment... Want cooties? Just do this instead:

Well...what other episode can I vote off first except 11:59 (I'm nothing if not consistent )
Instead of an episode of Voyager, we get some nonsense story about some random lady who's Janeway's ancestor (naturally from the 20th/21st century, god forbid it'd be some other time) and a cranky old coot (why does Star Trek like this character type so much?) in some cliche "the old refuses to make way for progress" snore-fest of a story.
No.

The three most immediate ones I'd remove have already been taken out.

So I remove "JUGGERNAUT" next. Honestly, it's a pretty solid episode, but the ship made TWO massive jumps forward... something like 30,000 light years. They SHOULD NOT have encountered the Malon again. This episode should have either used a different species or been aired much earlier in the season.

"In the Flesh" nerfs Species 8472 far too early in their run, and their choice of Starfleet Academy as a habitat where they could play at being human makes no sense. On the plus side: Chakotay is actually pretty clever for once, and Ray Walston, as always, is a treat.

Whoever thought of "Course:Oblivion" should be slapped in the face.
Look audience; stuff is finally happening in this show! The theoretical plot of the show is finally picking up pace! We're preparing to enter a new, exciting region of space! Character-subplots are advanced in a logical and statisfying manner!

J/K it you have been watching the stupid grey goo clones from last season and none of the exiting things that happened this episode have "actually" happened to the characters we have been watching since the beginning.
Now let us return to Voyager's usual program of poorly thought out episodes and weekly status quo resets.:brickwall:

I cannot stand "Counterpoint." I find it such a trial to sit through, all the contrived back and fourth. "Does Janeway love this Nazi?" Ugh.

I even love that actor in everything! Except this.

This really is a strong season -- there's only two more eps remaining I don't particularly care for, all the others are some degree of winner for me.

Latent Image gets the axe. Despite an intriguing mystery at the start, the EMH's whining gets on my nerves. Plus, after forcibly separating Tuvix and treating B'Elanna against her will with that Cardassian's therapy, Janeway flipflops and lets the ship's only doctor nearly kill himself because of something Seven says. Really, Kathy.

Extreme Risk bugs me. The development for Torres regarding her feelings about the Maquis was right out of the left field. It's a shame they didn't develop it more.

The "Gravity" of this episode bogs it down far in boredom-land.

"Warhead" is very blah to me. Fun idea, but the execution is so lifeless.

What has more corn than a bad episode of Hee-Haw? Or even a good one (and yes, a lot of those do exist.)

Bride of Chaotica!

It's a bit too schlocky; Cap'n "Crunch" Proton was okay in smaller doses, but this got too much. It's cheesy and not in a gouda way.

"DARK FRONTIER" goes. It not only was the beginning of the true defanging of the Borg, but it shows some of the worst parents ever in television.

Once Upon a Time is a bit too cliche to enjoy. Also, Naomi's holodeck program is very annoying.

^^this

There were some continuity flubs as well. Not just for within VOY and Seven but the whole of the Federation too. The emotional impact, which is what the episode rides on, doesn't hold up as well - it's a legitimately good and sometimes great try, but Borg rot did start here. Though a couple episodes in season 6 (not the finale) did show there was still some proper life involving the Borg, and the fighting of, to be had.

"Someone to Watch Over Me" - dumbest euphemism for "let's learn you how to date so you can shag, so we can replace "Watch" with the word we want to use except we're not cable or broadcasting circa 2037 yet. Also, don't talk about 'The Disease'. Or how all the characters in TNG that claimed to have fallen in love with a hologram felt real bad - and not because they did anything messy in there.", ever.

Okay, using the hologram makes the concept a lot more palatable and, as usual, Picardo and Ryan sorta shine. And Braga always puts in a moment of interest, even in the clunkers. But having the hologram ( a computer generated simulation) genuinely falling for Seven? Um... did the Bynars come in during an untelevised adventure to do some upgrades? Plus, dating is about getting to know one another with a mutual underlying thought of possible sexual interaction being a motivation. Some people do one-night stands, on top of every other combination of sexually-based paradigms out there...

How can one love a projected image in a literal sense? A combination of physical and emotional attributres, this episode tries perhaps too hard to be creative. Unless that's the point. Either way, there are better episodes this season that work on all levels.

Weirdly enough, the treatment for profound depression is not "give her something to get her adrenaline going and then she'll be fine and there will never be a need to address it again." Nitey-nite, "Night." Hollywood mental therapy annoys the crap out of me.
