The least disliked episode 2021 - TNG Season Three

Okay, so I really like all these episodes. I'm waffling between "The Enemy" and "The Defector" only because they live so closely together in my own mind. Both are great! These other episodes are even greater! uhhh... "The Enemy" get's ditched!

The Ensigns of Command

The Defector
The Hunted
Yesterday's Enterprise
Hollow Pursuits
The Most Toys
The Best of Both Worlds I

The Ensigns of Command is out; the Sheliak stuff is terrific, but Data's portion of the story is weaker. Mostly thanks to the acting of the colonists.

The Defector
The Hunted
Yesterday's Enterprise
Hollow Pursuits
The Most Toys
The Best of Both Worlds I

All the remainders have a lot going for them. I honestly can't decide based on merit. I'll take "The Hunted" off the list only because I like the others SLIGHTLY more.

The Defector
Yesterday's Enterprise
Hollow Pursuits
The Most Toys
The Best of Both Worlds I

"The Defector" goes, because the ending was a bit too predictable. It was obvious that it was a Romulan trap (the initial fake pursuit!!!) and that Picard had a backup plan... the only other species that had a cloaking device were the Klingons. What else?

Yesterday's Enterprise
Hollow Pursuits
The Most Toys
The Best of Both Worlds I

Hollow Pursuits has been muzzled. It's hard to reconcile the use of personal imagery on the holodeck. Should be disallowed somehow.

Yesterday's Enterprise

The Most Toys
The Best of Both Worlds I

I've never been able to rewatch "The Most Toys" because of Fajo's mistreatment of Data. Which probably shows how strong the episode is, but still.

Yesterday's Enterprise
The Best of Both Worlds I

So the winner is...

Yesterday's Enterprise

That I like slightly better than the other one.

Both are great, but it's a real coin toss. YE had a great story but did they need to spend precious minutes on the clock to go all soap opera between Yar and temporal-grampa Castillo as a tacked-on catalyst with artificial emphasis for her wanting to stay behind? The extra screen time could have been used for better things, since the main crux of her subplot is, as a rash decision on her part, wanting to die in a way other than at the ("hands"?!) of a big gooey glop and for no reason other than her acting rash in the first place. (to be fair, the story was made under a lot of duress and the Yar/Castillo scenes aren't entirely bad... just contrived. )

At least the soap opera between Riker and Shelby had better anchoring with playing it safe, end runs, and other football euphemisms as opposed to the usual cliche of wanting to jump into bed.
