The least disliked episode 2021 - TNG Season One

Removing The Battle. Though the episode improves the Ferengi somewhat over The Last Outpost, I don't find it credible that the Federation would leave a starship just floating about for the Ferengi to find.

------------current list----------------------
Encounter at Farpoint <-------------- left off unintentionally by a previous poster and returned.

Home Soil
Coming of Age
The Arsenal of Freedom
Conspiracy

Taking "Encounter at Farpoint" off deliberately this time. The part with Q was pretty cool, but the Farpoint "mystery" was way too straightforward. And I'm glad they didn't keep this interpretation of Troi.

Home Soil
Coming of Age
The Arsenal of Freedom
Conspiracy

Taking out "Coming Of Age" because I like the rest more. It's really the only reason.

Home Soil
The Arsenal of Freedom
Conspiracy

Home Soil is gone. It’s very boring and shouldn’t be in the Finals.

The Arsenal of Freedom
Conspiracy

"Conspiracy" has some interesting stuff but it's tone is so much darker than the rest of TNG. Off the list! Leaving us what actually might be my favorite first season episode:

The Arsenal of Freedom

Boy, you guys should really slow down a little, take a breather once in a while, relax!

"The Arsenal of Freedom" is not the best of episodes but then again it's the first season... It's a wonder the series survived it.
I remember Riker arguing with something he knew was nothing but an illusion and it made me think of these bozos who argue with the people on their TV set!!!

"The Naked Now" gets clothes and leaves the list.

Doing the exact same plot of a TOS episode so early was not a good idea.

Later TNG and spinoff shows would use TOS stories as springboards, but none of those compares to plot point-by-plot point drudgery of TNN. It's also way too early in the series' run to even care about their acting goofy and unlike TNG, with TOS it's not as difficult to look back and appreciate it more as a result of time and honing of charcters. Even worse, the TNG episode more or less squanders any character development potential, save for Geordi and Yar. And even then it's fairly superficial. But who needs a "now" equivalent of someone painting "love mankind!" and "sinner repent!" on a bulkhead as genuine shock moments when everyone can have an addled little orgy instead. Ugh...

Conspiracy is the only season 1 episode I feel any real desire to rewatch, solely because it's so utterly bizarre and unique from a tonal perspective. It's basically an 80s body-horror short film wearing Star Trek costumes. It's random, strange, gross and cheesy, and I love it because of that. There's absolutely nothing else in TNG - or Star Trek in general - that is like this episode, and for that reason it gets a nod of approval from me.

Personally, I think that "The Arsenal Of Freedom" is better.

It's both a curse and a blessing, but season one will try any style and trope - and what's presented in "Conspiracy" actually works despite the occasional cheese. It's a gouda episode.

"Arsenal" also has some cheese sprinkled on top, but it's competently done - especially where it counts the most. It's a great Geordi story, and a great one for the audience in terms of learning how to build confidence and adapt when chucked into something so unfamiliar, and it doesn't go over the top by making Geordi a superhero in a snap of the fingers, nor does it shirk and have Geordi be just as outlandish in the opposite direction. I'm just happy that the planet Crusher was stuck in had the same trees and roots as on Earth, since going by taste alone can determine what a substance can actually do in medical emergencies. Sugar and stevia are both sweet, but both have different effects on the body... but it's a tv episode stuck at 43 minutes; there's only so much minutiae they're able wallow in :D, and the story's so well-told I didn't really care at the time and still don't.
