The Least Disliked Cardassian Episode

So, next up in these alien-race-themed elimination games: the Cardassians!

Anyway, THE RULES. The basic idea is your standard elimination game. Below is a list of Cardassian episodes from TNG, DS9, and VOY. Eliminate your least favorite or the one you deem the 'worst.' Please provide an EXPLANATION for why you are eliminating your choice and be sure to copy and paste the list with your choice removed.

Finally, please leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

No tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode just because you feel they would threaten your preferred episode's chance to win.

This list was more difficult to figure out than the Ferengi, Borg, Klingon, and Romulan lists, primarily because of how deeply woven into the fabric of DS9 the Cardassians are. It made defining the boundaries of what counts as a Cardassian episode quite tricky, @Farscape One and I had a lot more back-and-fourth than usual working it all out. To anticipate some questions we thought might come up, we capped it at 60. The Damar-plots-with-Weyoun episodes between the occupation arc and the final arc were excluded. Within those arcs they're always exploring the tension between Cardassia and the Dominion, but between them Cardassia feels so fully absorbed into the Dominion that it's not registering as a separate unit, and the Damar/Weyoun plotting was usually in C-story cut-aways, so these episodes just feel less Cardassian-y than everything else on this list. Over on Voyager, we included the episodes in which Seska was the primary antagonist, but excluded the ones in which her role was minor ("Alliances", "Lifesigns") or holographic. And, if anyone has any other questions about why something is/isn't on the list, Farscape and I have probably written a book on the topic already and can fill you in on the reasoning.

This is a difficult choice. Most Cardassian episodes are great. Not to keen on any of the Seska episodes really, but I think I enjoyed them more than Empok Nor, it at least the first time around. Very atmospheric, but didn't feel it had much if a story, so it has to go.

With so many DS9 episodes on the list, it seems like my first elimination would HAVE to come from one of those. And though there are two DS9's on here I consider damn close to being worse than this, I think I have to go with "Journey's End" as my first kill. There's nothing else on here that I struggle to get thru to this extent. I don't like how this ep wraps Wesley and I don't like how it portrays Native Americans. I was going to say "at least it intros Gul Evek", but I just realized it doesn't even do that, he was already established on DS9!

I can't disagree with you. I'll vote for Basics, Part II. The best parts of the episode are seeing Ludar forced to confront his darkest thoughts again, and help the crew retake Voyager. The rest of it is basically a giant undo button the writers press on anything being interesting. Chakotay's baby isn't his anymore, Seska is dead, Paris and his band of Talaxians retake the ship. Sigh.

I'll eliminate everything else before TNG "Chain of Command" with two legendary, highly respected Shakespearean British actors, David Warner & Patrick Stewart playing their extreme acting skills off against each other. That had to be one of the best Cardassian eps. of Star Trek, right up with DS9's Hannibal-Lecter-like "Duet" episode. I loved the way every Cardassian actor utterly went balls-to-the-wall with their scenery-chewing, epic-scale acting (Madred, Dukat, Garak, etc.). I can't think of an alien species who are consistently better-acted!

VOY Season 5: "Nothing Human" goes. Because it makes no sense. The doctor apparently created the Cardassian hologram by accident but it was uncharacteristically stupid of him given the aversion of a big part of the crew for the Cardassians. If you created pictures of imaginary characters to decorate say your child's bedroom would you choose one that looks exactly like some bully that bothers him at school? Then, in the end, the execution of the hologram is either nothing (if it's just a program) or indescribable cruelty if you consider it as a sentient being. The fact that the hologram has been made after a person doesn't make it responsible for what that person has done. I could expand indefinitely on why this is a terrible episode.
