The Least Disliked 2023: Star Trek Movies

forget least dislike for a moment, how come there hasn't been a Star Trek film for so long?
The extreme desire to make all the money, like Marvel and Star Wars level money. With a mid tier property like Star Trek, that lacks the same level multi-demographic cultural insertion, that's not possible. Paramount is chasing a pipe dream and so doesn't settle for that middle level SF production.

I know a lot of people despise "Nemesis", but I think it has some redeeming elements. The basic idea of having Picard face a younger clone of himself was good, and Tom Hardy did his best with the role...but he seemed to go a little too crazy with it. The "mind rape" scene with Troi was something that truly shocked me at the time; I'd never seen the franchise do that kind of thing before. But later, when Deanna is using her mental powers to track the location of the Scimitar, Marina Sirtis totally sold that moment. When she said, "Remember me?", I got chills, thinking to myself, "Now you've done it - never mess with a pissed-off Betazoid."

The other element of the film that I liked, was that at the time, it completed Data's story arc. The way he looks at Geordi, with no words, just before making his space-jump...Brent Spiner and Levar Burton both had such compelling looks on their faces. And when Data finally says, "...good-bye...", I almost wanted to cry. That's why I felt somewhat conflicted about them bringing him back for "Picard", because he died a hero, and that's about as close to human as you can get.

I have seen Into Darkness several times now and I just can't get over how badly they rehashed "Khan" and the plot holes are obvious and stupid. Add on the Carol Marcus male gaze scene and why did they swap out Spocks death for Kirk's? It was just another reason for the writers to say "See, we're not copying TWOK!" The first couple of scenes in the movie are great, but its all downhill from there...

My guess is they didn't want to directly redo too much, and alternate timeline Spock having more difficulty controlling emotions should make this plot twist stronger... yet it doesn't feel that way.

John Harrison was a strong enough villain without the big reveal, though the timeline alteration makes the "Khan" aspect work -- just about. I didn't think the villain needed to be Khan to draw in audiences, especially as it's a new timeline so things will be different, along with a whole new universe to explore. Yet once he becomes Khan, the overacting reaches 15. Couldn't buy into Khan and Kirk being pally for the longest time either, but the Spock fistfight scene didn't do much for me either.

"male gaze" - in terms of a percentage of the audience drooling, or from the generalized philosophical viewpoint of males? (Or, in this case, perhaps both?)

Still a solid first half or so.

I agree on this part. John Harrison as an augmented human soldier with wisps of Winter Soldier in there would work just as well, and Marcus as the main villain. But, Cumberbatch as Khan still works just as well, and he has the wonderful way of feeling dangerous, a man, like Spock, constantly under restraint, until that restraint breaks forth in rage against his former captor in Marcus.
