Am I the only one who liked the 1970s Doctor Strange film?
It hasn't aged well, but it was good for its time. What really impressed me way back when was that, unlike all the other CBS Marvel adaptations of that era, which toned down the more "comic-booky" aspects of CAPTAIN AMERICA or THE INCREDIBLE HULK or SPIDER-MAN, the DR. STRANGE pilot actually felt like the comic book!
Sure, it took liberties with the original comics, but Dr. Strange was fighting evil sorcerors and demons, astral travelling through weird Ditkoesque dimensions, waging occult battle against the likes of Morgan Le Fay, etc. Heck, he even lived in a pretty good reproduction of the Sanctum Santorum.
What used to drive me nuts about all those other CBS adaptations was that they took these colorful, larger-than-life characters and stuck them in plots that were better suited to BARNABY JONES or CHARLIE'S ANGELS: runaway teenagers, evil drug dealers, corrupt politicians and businessmen, etc. Where were the invading aliens and costumed supervillains?
DR. STRANGE may have been cheesy, but, by the Hoary Hosts of Hoggoth, it fully embraced its trippy comic book roots!
Alas, it got clobbered in the ratings by ROOTS . . . .
