The latest on Marvel films

He mentions Bucky being around in some capacity. Might mean they would do the Winter Soldier storyline in one of the sequels, which would be really cool.
I think you misinterpreted what Feige is saying there. He mentioned that the movie will be a period piece, so it'll be about Captain America's experience during World War II, which Bucky was a part of.
I don't think CaptainCanada misinterpreted anything. He's just saying that since Bucky is going to be part of the film series it leaves the door open to do the Winter Soldier storyline in a sequel. Just because the first film is going to be set during World War II doesn't mean prospective sequels would be, too.

I for 1 like all of the ideas except for ant man. I am hoping the next announcement is Black Panther. As this movie has been in some form of development since well before Blade. He would also be an added character for the Avengers.

If the films prove popular, Winter Soldier would make a good supporting character in a Russian-based Black Widow film...

Looking forward to this film. Very exciting projects that they're working on. The article has already grabbed my attention. Excellent!

Thor is all about a conflict in Asgard, making it completely irrellevant that it's based on the comic and not the mythical God.
Not at all. Comic Asgard is very different from Myth Asgard (the relationship between Thor and Loki, especially). Thor on Earth solo is the least important part of the modern Thor mythos, as well.
And most origin stories are simply, why do they feel they need two hours to "Introduce us" to a character? Often I wonder about Batman Begins..... We know his origin, do we need more than two hours to tell it? And if we didn't, it takes five minutes, tops.
If it's just a "he got his powers ___", that's five minutes. If you want to do extensive characterization, there's an obvious reason why. Some characters (the FF) don't really need the origin more than alluded to, but for many others, their becoming superheroes represents a really major evolution that merits coverage.
I also think they are kinda over saturating the marketplace. How many superhero movies do we need a year? Very soon, people are going to get sick of them. So you can kiss your avengers movie "Bye bye."
Superhero films are here to stay. They're a sub-genre of the action movie, which is a steady genre year after year. The 2000s were just the period when the technology was finally there to do most heroes.
Hate to say it but for the life of me I can't see Thor working if it's set in Asgard.TBH the idea of muscular vikings spouting the cod-shakespearean language doesn't quite do it for me,and I'm a Marvel fan.
...
I cannot see the movie appealing to casual moviegoers.
They're not doing the old-timey English; it says right there in the article that Branagh said no.

Regarding commercial prospects, remember Lord of the Rings? High fantasy film trilogy, the event of the 21st century? If anything, I think a Thor film has a lot of appeal, probably more than Captain America (especially when foreign markets are included).

I think Jared Padalecki could do a good Cap, though.
Yeah he has that cornfed look and it'll get the girls into the theater. ;) But I still like Ryan McPartlin (Captain Awesome from Chuck) the best.

My guess for the other film to be announced for 2012 is Doctor Strange.

Ohpleaseohpleaseohpleaseohpleaseohplease!!! :D

Hmm, weird thing is, with black hair and a stache, McPartlin would be good for that role, too. So maybe give Cap to Padalecki after all.

Another option for Doctor Strange: Bradley Cooper, who was also rumored for Green Lantern.

Well screw it, no interest in Thor, then.

Not bad at all... I see he's tall enough. Padalecki is a little more built ATM, but that could be fixed.

I think they will/should go older with Doctor Strange. It's a shame Hugh Laurie isn't just a tad younger. Bradley Cooper might work... he's charming.

Now, now... it may still be good. Maybe better. :p

Very good article. I am particularly pleased that Captain America will be a period piece. I can't wait to see how it turns out!

Dr. Strange was/is a man in his late 30s i believe.. an accomplished surgeon. I can't see some mid20s currently hot actor portray him (as much as i like Cpt. Awesome in Chuck).

Strange should be played by a good actor who fits that age and maybe they luck out and get a semiknown actor who makes the role his own (kind of like Viggo Mortensen owns Aragorn now).

As to Thor and the Shakesperean english.. you might want to catch the new Thor series written by JMS.. it's awesome and you won't miss the old speech pattern (which was campy at best). I'd hate for people to see the movie and either get totally confused and understand nothing or just laugh because it is so silly.. i say it's a good choice by Branagh (and that guy knows more Shakespeare than we all combined ).

I'm so excited about the whole buildup.. i went nuts when i saw Iron Man and that agent said "Call us Shield".. the entire movie i didn't get the clues and when he said it i lost it :D

The same with the teaser scene at the end with Sam Jackson as Nick Fury.. pure fanboy heaven!

I loved the scene at the end of new Hulk with Stark (played by Downey jr. himself) and can't wait to see the others when the new movies roll around.

I believe it's an excellent concept so far to have each major character have his own movie establishing his background and then tie him/her into Avengers. This way you don't lose time to introduce each character, his motivations and background which in this case would be the entire movie.. nothing but exposition.

Avengers is huge.. it could possibly be the blockbuster of 2012 (if they can keep that date) and it all hangs on the story itself. I pray to whomever is responsible to get clues how a superhero movie should be.. Iron Man, Spiderman 1-2, X-Men 1-2 and do it right. Get a decent director who respects the movie and gets The Avengers and get a writer who's worth his money.

I don't want to see something like Spiderman 3 or the Fantastic Four movies again.. every franchise has its bad apples and i hope they learned from these mistakes and do it right. They only get one chance to do it right and if so they'll have a movie the whole world will talk about.

And lastly.. i can't wait to see and hear Cap America yell "Avengers Assemble!!" on the big screen.. i'll be the one in the theater who yells out "Hell yeah!":techman:

No, I know somebody in Florida who likes it. (More seriously, I saw it about ten years ago and remember not hating it, but that's all I remember about it).

Am I the only one who liked the 1970s Doctor Strange film?

It hasn't aged well, but it was good for its time. What really impressed me way back when was that, unlike all the other CBS Marvel adaptations of that era, which toned down the more "comic-booky" aspects of CAPTAIN AMERICA or THE INCREDIBLE HULK or SPIDER-MAN, the DR. STRANGE pilot actually felt like the comic book!

Sure, it took liberties with the original comics, but Dr. Strange was fighting evil sorcerors and demons, astral travelling through weird Ditkoesque dimensions, waging occult battle against the likes of Morgan Le Fay, etc. Heck, he even lived in a pretty good reproduction of the Sanctum Santorum.

What used to drive me nuts about all those other CBS adaptations was that they took these colorful, larger-than-life characters and stuck them in plots that were better suited to BARNABY JONES or CHARLIE'S ANGELS: runaway teenagers, evil drug dealers, corrupt politicians and businessmen, etc. Where were the invading aliens and costumed supervillains?

DR. STRANGE may have been cheesy, but, by the Hoary Hosts of Hoggoth, it fully embraced its trippy comic book roots!

Alas, it got clobbered in the ratings by ROOTS . . . .

HULK lasted as long as it did on a shoe string budget. Throwing aliens in on that budget would not have worked, IMO.

But I did like the DR STRANGE movie. I liked it, for its time, because the FX were actually pretty good. I remember going "wow" when I saw it that first time...

Oh yeah. I understand why, as a practical matter, they had to stick to more mundane plots. But it still frustrated the comic book fan in me.

Hey GREG...any inside info on the BLACKEST NIGHT story coming to DC in the summer? I haven't read DC (outside the awesome JSA) since Infinite Crisis. This story intriques me..

Rob

To be honest, I'm months behind in my comic reading, and nobody at DC has contacted me about doing a BLACKEST NIGHT novelization (damn). Sounds pretty ambitious, though. I'm looking forward to reading it.

True confession: when I was a little kid, I once dressed as Green Lantern for Halloween. The hard part was finding a ring to go with my cheap, store-bought costume!

Which is why i am glad I have a five year old son...HAL JORDAN is his favorite hero, and we got GREEN LANTERN costume for him...he wears it a lot.

My son is very smart for his age. He is, I kid you not, totally into DC comics. So much, in fact, he just asked me last night, out of the blue, and this is a five year old, why did they do CRISIS OF INFINITE Earth, destroy all those Earths, and then bring back 52 earth's in the Final Crisis. I could only shake my head and say 'good question'.

I loved the old DC multiverse. The highlight of my summers was waiting for the JLA/JSA cross-overs. Just waiting to see which heros from the two teams would be crossing-over with each other was a blast...the one where Earth 1 and Earth 2 team up with Earth S(hazam) being my favorite, and the following year's team up of the JLA/JSA and LEGION OF SUPERHEROS.

Those were the days...

As for OP. I think a new DOCTOR STRANGE movie would be cool, though I would prefer DC's PHANTOM STRANGER or DR FATE; but that aint ever going to happen
