The Last Starfighter...

I thought it was a great movie too and didn't even realize that people generally disliked it. I loved it when I was a kid and found my feelings about it basically unchanged when my wife and I showed it to our kids recently (I WAS amazed at how short the movie seemed as an adult but I've noticed that about a lot of the movies that I watched as kid). I also downloaded a suite of the music from the score and listen to it frequently on my iPhone. It's a shame that they didn't make a sequel of the movie but then again sometimes it's better to try to imagine what happens afterward rather than watching an awful sequel that forever sullies your memory of the initial movie (e.g. "Cocoon:The Return").

I don't think that I'd like to see a remake or a sequel of it, particularly since the actors who played Grigg and Centauri have long since passed away but I wouldn't mind a properly remastered/enhanced DVD/Blu-Ray edition of the movie however. Also, would a real Starfighter videogame for the Wii/PS be too much to ask/hope for? :bolian:

The movie is certainly escapist, but it's escapism with heart! Alex is the "everyman", who looks around and finds his life is stuck in the proverbial rut. His present, his past, and his forseeable future all blending together in a crushing mundanity that he yearns to escape.

He yearns to be special. He wants to rise above what he is and show everyone around him that he can and is more than the product of his existence. Hard to do when even your mother and your girlfriend seem to have accepted their mundane little places in life.

Then he gets his chance, and like the old man says: "when it comes, you gotta grab it with both hands and hold on tight..." "

Starfighter..." is the movie for every person who ever wanted to reach for a better, more meaningful life, but for whatever reason didn't...

The last time we had a thread on this topic I ordered the DVD from Amazon.

Love the film for all of the varied reasons mentioned above.

I would never say it was perect, I was older than many of you when it came out, but I loved it from day one as a heartwarming story, albeit told many times in many films, that had the lucky mix of timing, talent and whatnot to be greater than an analysis of its parts would lead you to expect.

may have to watch it again this weekend when I have time. and some of the dialog quoted may need to work its way into my classroom...I forgotten how good it was.

I just love this movie, cos there's so many moments that just stand out to make it pure escapist fun.

My favourite???

"I'll have it all figured out by the time we reach The Frontier."

BEEP-BEEP-BEEP-BEEP.

"What's that??"

"The Frontier!!"

For much of my childhood, I lived in a smaller town which had a hotel whose flashing sign was very reminiscent of the sign at the Starlight Starbright trailer park in the movie. When we'd go on nighttime drives, I'd often look up in the sky to see if I could spot Centauri's ship or Alex and Grig's starfighter.

Not to mention ships from Star Wars.

Pssst ... the article was from The Onion. Total fiction. Funny, though. :techman:
Oh.

Well fuck my ass and call me a bitch! First time that's happened to me. I guess the sheer idiocy of it made it credible - for Bush. :alienblush:

Don't feel bad. I was burned by an April fools article. I even posted in TNZ pissed off about it. Ohh the shame...

Back on topic. I loved The Last Starfighter. I think I'd watched it at least 10 times as a kid on HBO. I really need to get that movie on DVD (as well as The Final Countdown)

I saw this movie when I was 10 and didn't know that the effects were computer generated. I found out only a few year sago (not having seen it since 1894 or shortly thereafter)I wonder what I really thought back then when I saw it, I mean, I enjoyed the story and all, but I didn't think much at all of how they rendered the ships and all. Did this happen to anyone else?

Anyone notice that there is a "announced" page that's popped up on IMDB in the last month or so for a film called "Starfighter"... The sequel to "The Last Starfighter"...

I would go see it.

First - yes, love this movie! It was great when I was a kid and I still watch it with much appreciation and enjoyment whenever I do see it again.

Second - a number of people have said that many people have a low opinion of this movie, but in three pages of postings there has only been *one* negative one. I'm not sure this apparent low opinion of the movie is really there! Lots of love for it, lots of love.

Third - favourite elements. The CGI was cool, the music very triumphant and memorable, and the movie's very quotable!
"You have been recruited by the Star League to defend the Frontier against Xur and hte Ko-Dan Armada"
"The Last Starfighter........" "Is dead! The Last Starfighter, is DEAD!" (brilliant deduction, Xur.)
"Give back the money? Oh nonononononoooo."
"You may have thought it was a game, but it was a test. A-ha, a test!"
"Monster. Harumph!"
"Sorry. I didn't mean to step on your.. uh... whatever that is."
"Ri-ta. Ri-ta-na. Ri-ta-na."

Childhood favorite, definitely. Bought it on DVD several months ago along with The Neverending Story and Flight of the Navigator. The three of them just seem to go together. :)

As for a potential sequel, I could see a "next generation" of sorts working, but I'm not sure I trust the current crop of moviemakers to do it well.

I'm currently penning a sequel called "The Next Starfighter" where Alex's daughter (or son, depending on the demo we're aiming for!) has grown up to lead legion of Starfighters, and has a hard time dealing with why Rylos should go to the defense of a newly threatened planet...our Earth. He/She doesn't give a crap about it because he/she grew up on Rylos! Get it???

We start shooting in August for a summer 2010 release! (look for Vince Vaughn to play the Centauri-analogue character!)

This movie is one of two first cgi pieces. It is a milestone in modern CGI movies.

The first would be "Tron" - 1982 (jeff bridges)

Everything after Star Fighter, revolutionized the CGI industry and made it possible for computer animation (Star Wars remakes utilized it and Pixar)
