The Last Starfighter...

Data Holmes

Admiral
Admiral
This film seems to get a bad rap from a lot of people. I like it and think it was a revolutionary piece of film. Sure it was a little campy, but come on...

What say you?

As a separate issue of conversation, I think that this film could be done wonders with a "remaster" with the CGI effects updated with today's abilities. I love the original, but I would also love to see someone do a full blown, all expenses paid update to the effects, which really are the only thing holding it back in this day and age. The story is strong, the acting was great, the score is perfect. It's just the effects are dated at this point.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

The Last Starfighter is perfect just the way it is! it doesn't need updating! It doesn't even need a sequel! I love that little movie in all it's eighties video game fantasy glory!

I like The Last Starfighter as-is. It's a fun movie. :)

I love it too, as is.

I'm just saying I would also love to see them update the effects. It could be done easy and wouldn't change any of the film. I would love to see that as well.

I would not mind seeing revamped CGI effects blended into the movie as is, but that's it - only the spaceship scenes. Leave everything else as is. And I'd insist that such a DVD release also include the original version untouched.

From a 2008 perspective, part of the fun of TLS is that, although a computer game was used to recruit pilots, the real space battles also resemble a computer game, albeit a more advanced one. :)

I think it's great the way it is. I know too much about special effects to believe a lot of what I see, even from a blockbuster in 2008, so I just sit there and appreciate the skill and effort that went in to creating them. The Last Starfighter had groundbreaking special effects and that deserves respect.

Leave it alone, it's just fine as is.

I like this movie a lot. It's just a plain fun goofy skiffy flick. And, really, what more does a person need? Kudos to whoever did the casting for getting Robert Preston to play Centauri, as he really makes the movie, IMO. Well, him and Grig the gung-ho lizard. :)

Did Galoka think the Yuloos were too ugly to save? NO!

Thus if Galoka would not remaster the film, then we should not.

Esanjay!!

{I have now gone off the deep end.)

Would have to agree here. I love the movie as is, but it is always fun to revisit something we love with a new perspective, so long as our source material remains untouched and available for comparison.

Agreed. I saw this for the first time last year at Autobot's house after competing in an "Amazing Race"-like sci-fi trivia themed competition in San Diego. Our team name? "Xur and the Kodan Armada"

Also, you are referring to visual effects, not special effects. Special effects are those created live on set. :techman:

I love this film. It draws you in right from the opening credits and makes you feel like a kid again - assuming you aren't one already.

As for updating.... no. Not just yet. It looks cool like it is.

In 2008, the video game would be available for the PlayStation, Nintendo, Xbox and home computer, and they'd have about 500,000 qualified pilots... most of them under the age of 13. :p
