Something has seemed very familiar to me all season, or at least since Discovery has shown up in the new century. It seems that every episode has the crew show up to a new place, trying to learn what they can about the Burn, picking up experts along the way, and trying to reconnect with Starfleet and the Federation.
Suddenly, it hit me. This is, in a certain way, the general dynamics of the series, The Last Ship. A global pandemic occurs, destabilizing governments, including the United States. One ship, a United States destroyer, has been unaffected, having spent several months hosting scientists, who unbeknownst to them, have been searching for original forms of the disease. With lines of authority and communication breaking down, the destroyer travels far afield, searching for scientists and facilities to deliver the research, learning about how the life has changed with the pandemic and to find the remnants of authority of the United States.
Of course, I wouldn't say there is a one-to-one correspondence, and there is still a lot of story to be revealed in this season. Nonetheles, I can see a little inspiration from the Last Ship.
