The Last Ship - Discussion Thread (spoilers possible)

Is the russian ship based on a real one? I can't remember hearing the ship's class, but I could be misremembering.
Kirov class

That is one big ship. I got myself wondering when they said they had nuclear missiles. Thought only submarines did that these days, but it seems Kirov Class do, or at least can carry nuclear missiles.

So can an Arleigh Burke, in the form of Tomahawks with nuclear warheads. They just haven't since the Bush 41 Administration.

ETA: oops, didn't read all the way to the end of the thread. Kindly pardon some repition of info.

I think the camo uniforms came into wide use so the Navy would be more in line with the other services during the War on Terror.

Speaking as a landlubber, I think they're silly.
Nonsense! They're awesome at blending in with water, so if someone goes overboard, finding them becomes a real challenge!

... Oh, and they tend to melt skin when they catch fire, too. :p

That's the thing though. They're not in use on the USS Gravely.
The camo/"blueberry"/"aquaflage" uniform ("Navy Working Uniform", or NWUs) is indeed primarily a shore uniform. My understanding is Admiral2 is correct; the Navy adopted it a few years after 9/11 because the brass didn't want to feel left out from the cool kids' digital camo party.

The main uniform while underway is coveralls, especially for those that work with machinery. Not sure about the more admin/command Sailors.

... Holy sh*t, were those Russkies incompetent! No watchstanders to spot the invaders? And where were all the unarmed sailors? Massive, unbelievable fail. And the admiral lost his concubine! I guess they'll probably rally in an ep or two, but they've lost several top-level officers (why was that one guy infected again?), and crew morale must be about zero after the attack. We may need a new Big Bad soon; these guys suck.

Nice moment focusing on the melancholy Sailors when the dodgy scientist was reunited with his family, though.

(why was that one guy infected again?),

He was testing the vaccine.

I think between patient zero getting loose and the explosion damage, the Russians are pretty much down for the count.

Only 2 episodes left in the season. :(

Great episode.

I liked that they had the Russian admiral act in the guise of the audience by calling out the Captain's taking point on the away teams (to borrow from Star Trek).

I guess I should have seen the bright-eyed guy trying to redeem himself for wanting to leave the ship being the one who died on the mission. He had that goofy smile any time anyone said anything nice about him, so of course the "aww shucks" kid is gonna buy it.

As someone mentioned, it was cool to see the back and forth chess match between everyone and the tactics used. Slattery pretending not to know what to do to buy time for tracking the communications signal. The Doctor pretending to be in love with the Captain, which both reduced the Admiral's suspicion as to why she came so easily, and allowed her to pass the note and the knife blade. The packing of the gun beneath the virus samples so the Russians wouldn't check it very well. The leaving behind of explosives to cover their extraction. The Admiral telling his people to search without sounding the alarm, and the Captain anticipating the ambush because of that and changing their extraction point. All very logical moves. Granted, the Russians were depicted as pretty dumbfounded by comparison, but still, it was pretty cool to see the battle of wits with at least the admiral.

The sad return of the raiding party contrasted with the reunion of the British guy and his family was nicely handled.

Slattery's "Two sailors walk into a bar" non-joke joke was great, and a perfect tension breaker for the crew.

This was a very exciting 43(?) minutes of television. I've enjoyed this show a great deal, and this was one of, if not the best episode so far.

I was waiting for Tex to get killed since the actor's not in the main credits, but he's pretty much the fourth lead so far.

I got a little worried when they didn't show him in last week's previews for this episode. I really like his character, and I didn't want to see him get bumped off.

When Tex was talking about how he went on the mission just to impress the doc, I thought that was setting him up to die.

John Pyper-Ferguson is like the king of recurring characters -- The Last Ship, Caprica, Burn Notice, Alphas, The Crow, The Adventures of Brisco County Jr., Jeremiah and more.

He's reaching critical exposure point like Robert Knepper. Just on the edge of being recognized by name.

Good episode. I'm curious to know the state of the Russian Cruiser now. Damaged in the assault (perhaps crippled) and now probably infected with Patient Zero out running around the corridors. You would think they just about have it all wrapped up (recovered the crew, have an antidote, etc) except it would have been interesting to see if the guinea pig officer actually would have survived. And I'm sure from previews, they are going to have problems with the antidote or setbacks which will continue the "plague cure" storyline a bit longer.

.
Just looking at the secondary explosions i would expect him to be on the bottom of the Atlantic ocean.
The only big difference I could see was the overuse of camo uniforms on The last Ship. The real navy personnel mostly wore blue uniforms.

The show is a few years old, so it was probably filmed during the transition to the blueberry camo Navy Working Uniform.

As a taxpayer, it's worse than silly, since it's now been found that the NWU just keeps on melting when exposed to fire, so it will not be allowed to be worn at sea after all and will have to be replaced with new flame-resistant coveralls.

This is after:
  • The Army spent billions on new camouflage that didn't work well and now has to spend billions to replace it.
  • The Air Force developed one camo pattern, had to replace it, and then said the second pattern couldn't be used in Afghanistan.
  • The Marines developed a good camouflage uniform but refused to let other services use it.

A cynic might say that the services went on a spending spree with an unquestioned post-9/11 flood of money. God forbid they just updated and refined the common-to-all-services BDUs.

END RANT.

They are all still upset about being forced into BDUs 30 years ago.

has anyone seen a sailor in a plain t-shirt. They are all blue with the ships logo embroidered front and back. Something special made for a couple of hundred is not something you expect to be in the uniform store

I don't think the "billions" estimate is completely accurate. I think that includes the cost of all uniforms purchased since the switch. But technically speaking, uniforms do not have an unlimited lifespan and need to be replaced every few years anyways. Typically when they change uniforms the do so gradually which is why you can see different units of the same type wearing different uniforms (driving different vehicles, having different equipment, etc). When I was in service units were ranked to their combat status and the higher the status, the higher the priority for newer equipment and supplies.

Now for the typical GI, nothing sucks worse than having accumulated a half dozen or so uniforms over the years and then having to shift them to the storage box because now you have to buy new uniforms (a lot of soldiers buy uniforms beyond their basic issue and what you can afford with your clothing allowance for convenience).

And of course, people who worked in Supply or were close friends with the Supply Sgt never seemed to be lacking new uniforms.

You're right, I was hesitant to go with the $4-5 billion that's in news articles, but "billions" isn't right, either. Thanks!

So the captain speaks Russian? Convenient!

Wow, talk about black and white. all the Russians are super evil and all the Americans are super good. Talk about dichotomies, give you characters some character and not this bland cookie cutter nonsense.

How would the Russian admiral know anything about the XO? At his rank, information about him wouldn't be common knowledge.

What do you mean you can't burn through it with your incendiaries? Sure you can!

The good old suppressor trope. Sorry but even a sub sonic 45 round through a suppressor is pretty loud. Where are they even getting all these non-standard weapons and specialty equipment? Makes no sense.

Why would they not check the life jacket? Also where did they get a tiny RF device? It's not like that's something they would have just laying around.

Herp de derp. Russians will never find that 1911 in the vaccine case. seriously, how could they not find that?

No scientist would ever purposefully test an altered virus on themselves and then proceed to infect other people. It makes no sense. Even if he tested it on himself he would take steps to prevent others from being infected unless he was a sociopath and wanted to kill everyone on the planet.

Umm vaccines aren't instant.

How much junk does she sneak past the Russians? A handgun, a note, a razor blade and a transponder. Come on!! No one could be so incompetent!

Why would you test it on your own crew when you have a useless captive (Tex) that you could test it on? Why piss off your men needlessly?

Now that you have everything you want, the doctor, the vaccine and the samples, why not go ahead and destroy the American vessel? Oh that's right, we have to wait for the plot!

You're risking the vaccine for two men? How noble! They've been talking about how the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few all through the series and now when they really need to stick to that, they don't!

The classic bathroom ploy, handy! Man, escaping from the Russians is super easy!

Good thing all you need to escape the Russians is a tiny razor blade. That's their plan, really?

Come on, how do you sneak onto a Russian ship. No way.

If it's so easy to sneak aboard the Russian ship, why not just put some thermite grenades on their engines and nuclear weapons? They have access to any weapon or device they want due to the plot, why not just destroy the ship while you're at it. If you access to their ship and they never notice, just go ahead and sink it.

Don't set off the alarm? Why not! you have 300+ sailors on your ship, set them on alert! It makes no sense not to have your entire crew immediately warned and looking for them!!

"I still have to give him the second part of his vaccine. I can't go with you". Really, five minutes later you have to give him the second part? Who would anyone believe that? Is it a vaccine or a epoxy?

"They are on the other side of that hatch!" Super captain!!! At this point we can just go ahead ad say he's omniscient.

How does a Russian ship with all those sailors on alert not find the boat hanging out on the side of the ship?

The whisper gun shots from the suppressed AR's. That's not how suppressors work!! They are still loud enough to be heard. Also if the Russians are already alerted to you, take them off!

We are the good guys, WE ARE INVINCIBLE! Except for the sailor we are going to kill off to create a somber mood!

What's the kill ratio now? Like 1000000000 to 1? The American's never miss and the Russians ALWAYS miss. Just full out attack, no one has yet to hit anyone on this show with anything more than a glancing blow and one guy who was shot but kept on fighting until they where on their way. who gets shot and doesn't immediately tell their friends and crew mates?

Dude, you are way too highly strung to be watching this show. Abandon ship now and save yourself.

Hollywood has never made a completely accurate naval picture. They get close sometimes, but you're lookiong for perfection where you ain't gonna find none. In this case, you can still have fun if you can focus on things that are good no matter what they screw up.

For me, it's candid views of an Arleigh Burke destroyer and Rhona Mitra on my TV on a weekly basis. I can excuse many sins on that basis.

I think the US Navy routinely post short biographies of the CO, XO and Command Master Chief on their ships websites.
