Spoilers The Last of Us Season 2 - Spoilers

Jesus Christ!

Damn what a gut punch of a season finale

Ellie gets hammered with the message that revenge is a bad thing in this world as it inevitably drags in everyone close to you into that abyss and she just can't let it go. Her recklessness and at this point insanity costs the lives of Jessie and the lives of Abby's crew including a pregnant woman that she inadvertantly shoots.

It seemed though that it finally got into her head after she failed (out of fear and in panic) to rescue the unborn baby by performing an emergency C-Section when disaster struck and Abby found her.

One thing that especially amazed me in this episode is the extreme high production values - the streets they walk through, all the sets believably look like 30+ years of neglect and the special effects truly convey some larger set pieces. One thing i disliked though is the military precision GPS system everybody seems to have that is able to tell you precisely where everybody is so you can get to them right on time, that somehow pissed me off a little and that feeble attempt at explaining it away didn't make it better. It's a small gripe but still.

Now it looks like we will actually see much of season 3 from Abby's view given the final shot of the season and honestly, as much as i miss Pascal, i am really invested in the story now and thinking about it am curious to see Abby's side of things. It seems like she put the Joel business behind her, eye for an eye and be done with it only to be dragged back by Ellie.

Double Spoiler from here on for future season 3 events:

In a behind the scenes Promo one or two weeks ago i saw them filming or rehearsing a fight scene between Abby and Ellie and i was waiting for it for the entire episode but it didn't come. Did they already film scenes from season 3? I have not heard that they were shooting both seasons together as one. It's a bit of a cop out and old trope to hear a shot and then fade to black supposedly leaving us in the dark to the fate of a main character when we all know she will not be shot. It's likely that Dina fired off the shot or that Abby missed on purpose.

This behind the scenes and especially the short interviews sums up the core of the show and especially season 2 very nicely. Too many people got hung up over Joels death and Pascal having to leave the show and forget that it's not the Pedro Pascal show but a story they want to tell and explore.

Well it's all over now. What a bold way to go out. A very unique SERIES final. :)

Okay.

What Negan might have done to Ellie with Lucille was shocking! But he had no choice when she came out infected and said " I am Eocuts of Spores. Your life as it has been, is over. From this time forward , your will service us. Strength is irrelevant, Resistance is Futile. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service ours. You will be infected. The knowledge and experience of the human Ellie is part of us now. We will proceed to to Jackson, Wyoming and if you attempt to intervene, we will destroy you.

Terrible finale to a disappointing season. Changing Joel's character from season one didn't work. Ellie became annoying and lame. Dina's character wasn't fleshed out. Hopefully no Ellie and a strong Abby in season 3.

They quit on a happy note. Ellie wakes up with Joel still alive. His death was just a dream End series :) Actually I have no idea why they dropped out for the final, Maybe they were sticking around to just see Joel one last time or they had big Memorial Day plans the next day. The impression I get is they lost viewers but not enough to hurt in the ratings. Who knows how this all Talley's if you include hate watchers and people watching to stick it to hate watchers and all that kind of stuff.

I'm sure Pascal's departure had an impact.

I reckon Kaitlyn Dever will knock it out of the park next season.

And for anyone interested, the season wrapped at about the 2/5 mark of the game, so there's still a lot of story left to tell.

Seems pretty clear that Memorial Day had a big impact and the numbers will catch up. Even the Variety article admits overall numbers are better for season 2 than season 1.

Overall I thought the finale was good, though I had a lot of issues as to how/why certain things happened.

I'm all for suspending my disbelief but both Ellie and the boat surviving after the wave capsized the boat seemed a stretch. (looked amazing though)

This was compounded by Ellie then being captured and almost killed by the Scars, until the sounds of an attack caused them to let her go. WTF? It would have taken 10 seconds to finish Ellie off rather than leaving a probable enemy, and her gun, behind you as you rush to save your village.

Was it explained how Jesse and Tommy got to the aquarium? Were they able to go overland, but then why did Ellie need a boat?

Call me a terrible person but just once I'd like not to see the pregnancy/no drinking trope used as shorthand so a character figures out a woman is pregnant, and just once have someone act like a lot of people would in that situation. Yes drinking during pregnancy can harm a baby, but also we're in a post apocalyptic nightmare, she's in agony and Jesse's about to push an arrow through her leg! I suspect in that scenario a lot of women would just be like "give me the whisky, sobriety starts tomorrow!"

I'm assuming it'll be explained next season how Abby tracked them down to the theatre so I'm happy to let that slide.

Overall the season has been good, I'll be honest, I nearly checked out after Joel died but I'm glad I didn't. I don't love the show as much as I did however. I get that it isn't TWD (although even back in S1 I felt it wasn't as distinct and as wildly different to TWD as a lot of people seemed to think it was) in that it isn't an ensemble and that we're really just following Joel, Ellie and Abby, but the downside is that too much stuff seems to happen off camera sometimes, and much as I do really like Bella Ramsey, Ellie can be hard to like sometimes, especially when you spend so much time with her.

I get that it is following the game here but it's just not the show I clicked with in season 1, and for me the USP was always the chemistry between Pedro and Bella, and frankly even if they'd killed Ellie and we were now following Joel I'd probably still feel the same.

I am more interested in next season than I would if they had continued to follow Ellie. I think Dever is a better character and I am interested in seeing her relationship with Jeffrey Wright. It almost feels like a return to basics to me. Older father figure with a young girl only some differences because Abby had a relationship with her real dad.

I am confused about the Day 1 bit. They really did lots of changes to Safeco Field for it to just be on the first day the virus started. Hope they remember that is what the stadium was called in 2003. Not T-Mobile Park.

Abby's Seattle Day 1 is concurrent with Ellie and Dina's Day 1.
