The Last Jedi Box Office discussion thread

I just watched the film tonight and thought it was different in a good way from preceding films, and not just because it didn't have a Death Star. I liked how viewers were misdirected constantly, and the First Order is getting away from being Nazis in Space. I saw women on the bridge of various ships, and some of the people and uniform kit appeared to have some Japanese influence. We're still stuck in WW2, but at least we have more bad guys than the usual pale faces in grey suits. I'm glad about Snoke, as I never regarded him as remotely interesting. Random ugly powerful bad guy, big deal. It's as exciting as all of the explosions and running in the Abrams Trek movies. Darth Millennial, however, is proving more interesting.

The movie will clearly do gangbusters, but I'd be surprised if it equaled TFA. That was the first SW film in a decade, this one is third in two years. Not that quantity means people aren't hungry of course, but I still think it'll do fewer bux than TFA.

But this is the last movie with Carrie Fisher so that might make up for it.

Mmm, possibly. I guess we'll see. Will the negative reaction by some cut into repeat business money, or will SW fans hate-watch it multiple times?

It really is hilarious that the film made more domestically in its opening weekend than Justice League has made in its entire run. Sorry JL, I don't mean to laugh, but c'mon...

That scene with Leia flying through space... put a cape on her and she is a super hero. :)

I see it hitting about 1.7 billion over the course of its run. A few of those bucks will be mine (thanks repeat viewing!)

The only people laughing is LFL at the hate-watching money. Because it is still money.

I'll have the last laugh tho..

STAR WARS 8 The Last Jedi has the worst Rotten Tomatoes audience score of the saga and is lower than Justice League.:guffaw:

Come on tho, some of us are holding out for the Snyder cut..

There's evidence that some online trolls have been manipulating the audience scores on various sites.

But in any case, I really don't care what the unwashed masses think of a movie. When it comes right down to it, the only thing that matters to me is what I personally think of the movie.

Unfortunately this isn't true any more. The unwashed masses will influence the direction the franchise will go.

In my opinion, it will have minimal influence in the face of almost half a billion dollars in one weekend. The second weekend drop will be a good indicator.

One clear indicator: The Last Jedi's first Monday, at $21.5 million, barely makes it into the top ten of Mondays, which was below The Force Awaken's second weekend, according to Box Office Mojo.

That's actually surprising. I thought the movie would have more die hard TFA generation fans who wanted to see their new heroes again. You'd think they would be going back over and over again.

Scoring only a little over fifty percent on the tomatometer audience score, every indication is that at least half of the repeat viewing fanbase won't be returning to sit through that thing again; I know I won't. Anyone who even cares at this point should begin to see a sharp drop as it transitions away from the hype.

Sad part is, look at the disparity in score on justice league to the fans..

I thought it was pretty good. Its the Transformers the Last Knight I also loved. The movies there have actually been following loosely G1 canon. Cybertron does come to earth. Megatron was reborn as Galvatron. Star scream died. Etc..

But force ghosts, flying Leia, force projection, who the heck is using the word ascension? There isn't a term used in Star Wars..becoming one with the force is not ascension..

Also did you not notice the pattern of Men being berated and taught a lesson by the women in charge? Poe, Finn, Even Luke..all the men were always wrong, or needed a female to set them straight. Kinda sexist against men if you really want to be honest. It portrays all men as a stereotype. Take Rose and Finn's silly side mission out, and your story would still happen unaffected. Adam Driver is a bit better as an emo brat, but still annoying..even more annoying are articles which suggest Kylo Ren was better then Darth Vader...seriously??

Ummm..How about no..

A Triumphantly Feminist Film? Goes back to what I'm saying. So to be a good "feminist film" a female has to talk down to a prominent male character? The Guardian..hahhahhaha is like the US version of Vox or Vanity fair..or the Mary Sue website. Take their bildge for what it is..

Ok. What's nice about declarative statements like this based on a single website's anonymous (and possibly gamed) reviews is that we can re-visit them later to check for accuracy.

Serving as a single point of anecdotal data myself, I saw TFA 3 times in theaters, I might go back to see TLJ again at some point, but I'm not making it a priority. That seems to be the case for a lot of my friends, though a sizable minority seem just as enthusiastic as they were 2 years ago.

HuffPost had a fluff piece about "alt-right" protesters using bots as well. So, this is all interesting and now political, apparently.
